Good on Archbishop Jose Gomez.  He didn’t directly call Mahony evil, but it could be inferred he was grouping Mahony’s blatant, dishonest, soul-destroying of the victims) and self-serving cover-ups as “evil:” (I add emphasis and comments):

My brothers and sisters in Christ,

This week we are releasing the files of priests who sexually abused children while they were serving in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

These files document abuses that happened decades ago. But that does not make them less serious.

I find these files to be brutal and painful reading. The behavior described in these files is terribly sad and evil.[Now, the files in question really focus on how Mahony and his vicar general covered up abuse. So this appelation of "evil" could be inferred as being directed at Mahony, and not just the radical homosexual pedophile rapist sicko abusers - many of whom committed acts so heinously vile they defy description.  All I can say is, these men were possessed by something evil, the kind of evil that can only come from repeated sins against the 6th and 9th Commandments] There is no excuse, no explaining away what happened to these children. The priests involved had the duty to be their spiritual fathers and they failed.
We need to acknowledge that terrible failure today. We need to pray for everyone who has ever been hurt by members of the Church. And we need to continue to support the long and painful process of healing their wounds and restoring the trust that was broken.
I cannot undo the failings of the pastthat we find in these pages. Reading these files, reflecting on the wounds that were caused, has been the saddest experience I’ve had since becoming your Archbishop in 2011.

My predecessor, retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, has expressed his sorrow for his failure to fully protect young people entrusted to his care. [more like, sorrow at finally getting exposed for the moral monster he is] Effective immediately, I have informed Cardinal Mahony that he will no longer have any administrative or public duties. [Sadly, Cardinal Mahony, still a "priest in good standing," and will still serve in public. He should have been forced to resign and removed from the priesthood years ago. This man is a monster of epic proportions, Everything he has done has always been aimed at protecting himself, and keeping sicko priests in service who perpetuated the revolution Mahony envisioned in the Church] Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Curry has also publicly apologized for his decisions while serving as Vicar for Clergy. I have accepted his request to be relieved of his responsibility as the Regional Bishop of Santa Barbara.
To every victim of child sexual abuse by a member of our Church: I want to help you in your healing. I am profoundly sorry for these sins against you…….
…..I entrust all of us and our children and families to the tender care and protection of our Blessed Mother Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of the Angels.
Well, this is a fair first step, Archbishop Gomez. Now, formally and publicly roll back much of Mahony’s liberal protestantism.  As for Cardinal Mahony, I will pray for his conversion.
But most of all, pray for the victims.  As I said, what some of these boys – little children – had to suffer, over and over again in some cases, defies description.  This was some sick, violent stuff.

UPDATE: Noted episcopal (as in, bishops, not the sect) insider Rocco Palmo has a post of Mahony firing back. Remember, this was the man, Mahony, that expended great energy in his effort to crush EWTN or bring it under the USCCB’s control, which would, of course, have utterly ruined the network. So, she had to turn it over to a lay board. That has slowed the decline of EWTN, but not reversed it. Since Mother Angelica left day to day management, it has gone downhill, to my mind.

Palmo notes one unnamed insider predicting “this will get ugly.” This Mahony, he’s quite a piece of……..work. Yeah, that’s what I meant to say.

Actually, I think he’s very concerned about going to jail. As some of the links above have pointed out, he has fought viciously to protect primarily himself ever since this entire nightmare came to light. He has always engaged an army of lawyers. And he has retreted from one position to the next only after they became totally untenable. I’m sure he’s doing this to insulate himself as much as possible.

He’s the quintessential disciple of Bernadin. The savage bureaucrat with the smiling public face. I note in passing that Bernadin is widely believed to have had disordered sexual attractions. Apparently, one of the priest abusers lived in the same small rectory with Mahony for some time.

What is it with our Bishops, GOMEZ INCLUDED, that they fail to take action until everything hits them in the face and they have no other choice but to act and our Church even further disgraced?

” EVERYONE knows for sure now — we’ve run out of time.”

Informed catholics have known for many YEARS what a bad man Cardinal Mahoney is.
That is not LEADERSHIP. No plaudits for Gomez from me here. Our new Bishop should have been ashamed to be even seen with Mahoney never mind ‘business as usual’ until it’s no longer profitable.

That is leading from the back sort of leadership. Shades of Pres Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Clinton only came clean about his escapades when there was more to be gained by fessing-up than by running and hiding.

I can’t argue with what you say. But other bishops in Gomez’ shoes have used evasive language and allowed these disastrous liberals to hang around the Diocese, as Bishop Farrell has done with his predecessor here in Dallas.

And as the finger pointing goes on, the homosexuals wring their hands with delight! Boy Scouts, beware.

Will Mahoney stay the media darling, I wonder, w/his PC work regarding migration/immigration? Actually, probably not. Even over at the Catholic Distorter they aren’t having too much patience for him (his usefulness used up I suppose?) — and they aren’t wasting the crisis either in clanging the bell for Bishop Finn to be the next on the chopping block.

I recall being very disappointed when Mahoney was chosen the keynote speaker at the recent Dallas Diocese Ministry Conference this past fall — I coudn’t believe they would hold him up to be listened to, even if he was speaking on immigration & not say, liturgy (although I’m thinking that many here would laud his annual parade Mass held at the Catechist convention every year in LaLaLand) or the dignity of the human person. I’m thinking the conference will be a little more careful w/future keynote speakers.

I have to admit, it is difficult to say I will pray for him. He hurt so many. It was so callus & calculated. Even today, he’s casting stones at someone else, posting a rebuttal of sorts to Archbishop Gomez on his blog —

Archbishop Gomez is a good change in leadership from Mahony, What he needs to do next is clean up all the liberal heresy that Mahony allowed/supported here in our Archdioscee of Los Angeles.
I have lived my whole life here. Up until after Archbishop Gomez took over, on the Archdiocean web page they “Credited” our wonderful Mahony with starting ( pro homosexual /pretending to be “catholic”) ministries. “ministries to gays and lesbians”. Groups like ‘Fortunate Families”, “Always Our CHildren”. acting out of a sense of false compassion they advocate for so called gay marriage, for the inclusion of sexually active homosexuals to still be considered in full communion with the church, and oh how ‘bad ‘ our church is that she ‘condemns ” them. these are not my words but thiers.
As a parent of a adult child with this same sex problems, I was shocked to realize the heresy this group advocates for.
I was blessed to instead find Encourage and Courage, the one group that does have full blessing of the magesterim and calls for chastity for those outside of sacramental man/woman marriage. , both which I could not find anywhere in our Large ARchdiocese thanks to Archb Mahoney, Instead I had to reach out to the national level, and outside my archdioscee. This group is fully in line with church teachings and I pray that Archbishop Gomez help it replace the heretical pro homosexual groups that exits here.
Here in Los Angeles there are so many liberal pastors promoting so much that is false teaching in regards to marriage and its permanence, girl alter servers, irreverant masses, protestant like services . Archbishop Gomez needs a lot of prayers to clean up our mess.

Therese:

I agree with you. I’ve heard the lack of home grown vocations in Los Angeles was in part due to the liberalism that those called to the priesthood looked elsewhere. Both Gomez (and now Vann in Orange) need a great deal of prayers to clean up the mess. This is similar to what occurred in the Diocese of Richmond (VA), Saginaw (MI), and to a certain degree Cleveland (OH) under their old shepherds. Bp. Carlson was able to clean house in a short time, and I’ve heard Bp. DiLorenzo has been able to make waves for the better in Richmond. Richmond’s old bishop (now deceased) was progressive in definitely the wrong direction.

I hope that Bp. Schnurr has been able to support cleanup in Cincinnati (I know some good Catholics there, and it seemed like many of the more educated Catholics were able to begin some cleanup years before Schnurr arrived). Seminarians I met from that area were often at odds with the old bishop.

I know Cleveland has had an exponential increase in seminarians under Bp. Lennon, which is good news (the last Bishop there was big on altar girls and questionable ministries), and the increase in vocations is often due to a bishop with his mitre on straight. Other dioceses like Raleigh, Fort Worth, Charlotte, and Dallas have also had significant increases in vocations under the newer bishops. Raleigh in particular even changed the seminary where seminarians are now sent.

Courage and Encourage are good groups – I know some priests who moderate this group. Courage is much, much different (I’m told, and what I’ve read) than the group DignityUSA.

It will take awhile in the Los Angeles area (including Orange County), but it can be done.

I’m glad Archbishop Gomez put his foot down on Bishop Curry and Roger Cardinal Mahony. I wish the Vatican would have given Gomez a little more backup.

I say this because sometime in the early 1980′s, Pope John Paul II reduced some of the duties of Archbishop Hunthausen in the Archdiocese of Seattle, mostly due to his irreverence. Pope John Paul II sent in a young bishop, Donald Wuerhl, to look after Hunthausen. More about this situation can be found in Mother Angelica’s memoirs.

Mother Angelica also mentions that Pope John Paul II’s visit to the United States in 1987 was in part due to the liturgical abuses and watering down occurring in the United States. Don’t remind me about my Catholic youth ministry where confession was treated like “oh, that’s old church”, and we passed out numerous hugs, and talked about “feelings”.

I’m also glad that Gomez uncovered Bishop Zavala’s secret life. With Zavala having two teenage sons, the detective in me tells me that Cardinal Mahony knew about this, and swept it under the rug.

As far as a bishop resigning, the one I am most familiar with is the old bishop of Cleveland. Bishop Pilla resigned quietly either late in 2005 or early 2006, not long after Benedict XVI became Pope. IMHO Pilla had a reputation similar to Mahoney. Bishop Pilla’s resignation was not formally announced until April 2006 when his successor (Bishop Lennon) was chosen.

I also pray quite a bit that this year a strong co-adjutor would be chosen for the Diocese of Albany (NY), and a strong bishop (someone with a mind like Bishop Sample, Archbishop Carlson, Cardinal DiNardo, Bishop Conley, or Bishop Burbidge) will be chosen for the Diocese of Rochester (NY). Those two sees really need help. Two bishops that I would have liked to have seen stay passed retirement age were Bishop Doran (Rockford, IL), and Bishop Bruskewitz (Lincoln, NE).

Time to go – my box of detergent is collapsing.

I’m sorry this good comment was delayed. I can add that the Hunthausen situation and his blatant apostasy is covered in depth in Anne Roche Muggeridge’s book The Desolate City. It was a scandal of massive proportions, and the biggest part was, like Grahmann in Dallas, Hunthausen refused to leave and there was a huge swell of disobedience among the priest, and by the laity encouraged by the priests. It is amazing to me how easily millions of Catholics let go of their faith and replaced it with liberal protestantism, but, then again, there were many cultural enticements to do so.
