Another item for the “I’m waaaay slow/behind” category – the Mount Carmel Center, near the Carmelite Monastery in south Dallas, holds regular retreats on Carmelite Spirituality.  The retreats generally start with a conference from 10 am – noon and then you can stay until late afternoon praying/reflecting on the grounds of the Chapel/Monastery.  The schedule of conferences is here, but they are generally on Wednesday/Saturday of a given week, and then a new conference is at 3 week intervals.

The conferences tend to be on a given topic, viewed through the lens of a leading Carmelite Catholic thinker, like St. John of the Cross or Teresa of Avila.  This is right up my alley, so I think I’m gonna try to go in October.  They generally ask for a $25 donation per person to attend, but I don’t think they’ll break your legs if you only have a $20.  You can call 214-331-6224 ext. 314 at least two weeks in advance of your desired retreat date to register.

UPDATE:  I spoke with somone at the Mt. Carmel Center. They don’t allow kids.  You have to be 18 to attend.  So, if you have kids like us, you’ll have to make arrangements.  That’s rather disappointing, since we should be just as concerned about formation for kids as we are for adults, and bright kids can pick up things many think are above them.

I’ve been meaning to make a retreat there. I’ve done two silent retreat weekends at Montserrat. Highly recommended.
