Which do you prefer?  A tale of three altars, you can vote at the bottom – one, an altar recently installed in a church in Rome (courtesy Orbis Catholicus):

Next, from the Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans (courtesy New Liturgical Movement):

How about a third – a less modernist but commonly seen “table altar” in stone:

Me – the first, I hate.  I love the second.  I could deal with the last, although I think the Sanctuary looks too cold and barren.

Hate the first…
I wouldn’t mind seeing the second set up more like the table of the OF, i.e. the third with the ornament of the second.

I would like to love the first, with all that rich gold, the marble altar rail, etc, but WITHOUT the big box in front. It looks like UPS just delivered a large package. It’s sad that this altar isn’t even in the sanctuary, it’s placed where once the front rows were. Guess they didn’t need all that seating and wanted to push the alter toward the last rows to be near those seated in the back.
But the good thing is the beautiful altar still stands and will one day be restored, I’m certain of that.
