No, no they don’t October 6, 2010

No, pets do not go to heaven.  You don’t have to tell your kids that,  but Catholic theology precludes salvation for any other creature but humanity.  Nothing else was created in the image and likeness of God.  Nothing else even has a soul.

Non-politically correct statement time: if you love your pet so very very much that you just can’t bear the thought of eternity without it, you might want to consider your priorities.  We are called love God so much more than anything created that our thoughts for them should always be secondary.  Jesus didn’t say the Commandments could be condensed down to “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your mind, and all your strength, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself, oh, and also, those cute little furry animals that are so adorable – you absolutely must love them exceedingly, even more than most people, who are grouchy and can be annoying sometimes, unlike your cute super-obedient dog/cat/bird/fish/orangutan”

I don’t know about you, but as soon as we had children, my interest in our dogs dropped tremendously.  Yes, we take care of them, but all that cutesy wootsy “look what the dog did isn’t that cute” stuff just disappeared.  There’s just no comparison.  Kid – dog.  Hmmm, which is more important?

I think for some people, that is a genuinely perplexing question.

St. Thomas, please pray for us.
