Long list of “charities” that support Planned Parenthood February 7, 2011

Just so you know, if you give money to any of these organizations below but are opposed to abortion, you may want to reconsider your donations.  Some other groups, not necessarily charities, are also listed.  From LifeDecisionsInternational via LesFemmes The Truth:

The Boycott List includes a section called Dishonorable Mention, which lists seemingly innocuous nonprofit organizations that are involved with Planned Parenthood or otherwise active in the Culture of Death. Among the groups included are Outward Bound West, American Automobile Association (AAA), Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Phil Foundation, Lions Clubs, American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, Boys & Girls Clubs, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Camp Fire, Girls Inc., Girl Scouts, Kiwanis Clubs, March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Rotary Clubs, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, The Salvation Army, YWCA, America Gives Back (formerly [American] Idol Gives Back), YMCA, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), American Diabetes Association. Involvement ranges from donating funds to pro-abortion groups (or allowing affiliates to do so), supporting anti-life causes, allowing pro-abortion groups access to membership, adopting an official pro-abortion policy position, and so forth

We don’t give to any of those groups, but we do get annoying calls from the Lions Club and the Shriners seemingly every week.  It is truly amazing the extent to which Planned Barrenhood receives funding from numerous organizations that should know better.  American Cancer Society provides funding to Planned Barrenhood, in spite of the links between abortion, contraception, and breast cancer.  Same for Komen!  But if you try to engage a Komen supporter with this information, get ready for a vociferous reply.

Some quick hits on the huge Planned Parenthood scandal February 7, 2011

A couple of quick items on the huge Planned Barrenhood scandal, wherein several PB locations across the nation were found to be very happy to assist a child prostitution sex ring in its criminal acts.  First – Thomas Peters at American Papist notes how ‘progressive’ catholic organizations and blogs totally, completely, 100% ignored the story.  Not USCatholic, nor America Magazine, nor VoxNova, nor Catholics United for the Common Good or Catholics for a free choice had a single word to say on the biggest abortion related scandal in years.  Not one.  America Magazine literally continued a Hindu interpretation of the Mass on their blog – wow, coverage like that will bring in dozens!  Maybe even scores!  Aren’t these organizations the least bit interested in this?  Don’t all Catholics oppose abortion?  Oh……..

Secondly, New Theological Movement makes a provocative statement – it was a sin for LiveAction to lie to Planned Parenthood during their sting operations, and that we should not be cheering these kinds of tactics.   He further goes on to state that a Catholic hiding a Jew during WWII, who lied to the Nazis about having a Jew hiding in their addict (Good Lord, talk about Freudian slips – ATTIC), commits a grave moral offense against the Nazis, the German peoople, and the whole German race.  I have liked this guy’s writing before, and I can see the quibble with LiveAction’s tactics, but the bit about the Germans – that’s the kind of pie in the sky theology only an academic could argue over.

Fr. “Reginaldus” at New Theological Movement also makes the claim that it would be a sin for me, as a father, to lie to someone with a gun, threatening to kill me and my whole family, about whether or not my family is inside my house when I come across this guy in my front yard.  I’m supposed to maintain “heroic silence” or tell the truth, otherwise, it’s a sin against the aggressor and God.  Who could do that?  Who would do that?

Is Obama Administration deliberating hiding abortion data? February 7, 2011

Normally, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) releases abortion data for recent years in November.  This year, they did not do so:

Yesterday RedState broke a significant story which points to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation’s premier public health organization, making a conscious decision to stop publishing the only federal report on abortion.

To briefly recap, for 40 years the CDC has published the Abortion Surveillance Report. For 40 years that report has appeared in the last November or first December issue of CDC’s journal, the Morbidity and Mortality Report Weekly Report. This year it didn’t. A RedState tradition has been to use this report for our annual retrospective on abortion. When it didn’t appear in November… or December… or in January we decided to ask why.

Much panic insues at CDC.  You can read the article at RedState for the details.  But, moving on:

We have very little doubt what happened it this case. An inconvenient report was quietly killed. The interview we had with the CDC press office confirmed that not only had the report not been written but that there were no plans to do so. This was confirmed by the CDC. The person who confirmed it was not confused. She did not misunderstand. She answered that the report hadn’t been produced, that she didn’t know why, and that she would find out. She then later called back to confirm that it was not an oversight, and that the report would not be forthcoming.

The distance between that response and the current position of it being ready to go to press at seemingly a moment’s notice is difficult to bridge without a skyhook.

The CDC did not run the report. They confirmed that they were not going to run the report. Only after we brought attention to it have they begun scrambling to appear as if they were going to do it all along. At RedState, we’re reminded of the guy who trips on a curb and, embarassed, explains, “totally meant to do that.”

The suspicion, of course, is that abortions spiked and someone doesn’t want this to reflect on the policies of the Obama Administration.  We’ve already seen some data that the abortion rate went up in 2008 for the first time in about 20 years.  The CDC data would only provide an ‘official’ confirmation of that trend.  It could also be that the Obama Administration simply doesn’t want abortion data released at all, ever – it’s sacrosanct on the left that abortion is “only between a woman and her doctor (pleading infants need not apply)”, and having all this messy data to reveal the scale of the genocide going on isn’t very convenient.  Or, it could simply have been a bureaucratic snafu, but I’m skeptical of that – it sounds like CDC was directed to stop publishing the data, and when someone noticed, the usual bureaucratic reaction (panic) took hold.  Of course, this Administration has never previously given any inkling of such incompetence.

A priest fights the good fight in El Paso February 7, 2011

I have blogged before on Fr. Michael Rodriguez of the Diocese of El Paso.  I cover him for several reasons – he has much family in the Dallas area, he is a very devout, orthodox priest, he defends the unchanging Truth revealed by Christ through His Church with vigor, and he is fighting a very lonely battle.  I don’t think I can stress this last point enough.  To say that Fr. Rodriguez’ brother priests in El Paso are hostile to his clear and unambiguous proclamations of what the Catholic Church believes would be a great understatement.  The situation in El Paso appears quite tragic, in fact – Fr. Rodriguez is almost completely isolated within that diocese.  I don’t want to go into much detail, but suffice it to say, many of his fellow priests may have a personal, vested interest in being opposed to his clear proclamations of Church Doctrine on certain issues, especially homosexuality.

In El Paso, the City Council has tried, for a year or so, to ram through a provision granting ‘partner’ benefits to same-sex partners of city employees, and also to recognize same sex ‘unions’ as being the equivalent of marriage.  The voters of El Paso soundly rejected these efforts in a recent referendum, but that has only emboldened the City Council to try to use legal measures or fiat to push through their vision of a ‘just’ society.  Within the Church in El Paso, Fr. Rodriguez remains a lonely voice directed against these efforts.  He recently penned another op-ed in the El Paso Times.  Highlights below:

On Jan. 18, City Council decided to reword its proposed “non-discrimination” amendment to the Charter of the City of El Paso.

Let City Council be forewarned. A majority of El Paso’s voters already rejected an agenda that seeks to equate same-sex unions with the venerable institution of marriage.

It is morally incumbent upon City Council to cease efforts to manipulate and define the term “non-discrimination” in such a way as to suit a misguided, if not pernicious, agenda.

If City Council is obstinate in pursuing its course of action and dragging the city through another election, this will be a glaring display of arrogance, fiscal irresponsibility and disrespect toward the Nov. 2 vote of the majority of El Paso’s citizens.

Even more importantly, it will be morally wrong. Why?

It’s morally reprehensible to misconstrue “non-discrimination” in such ways as to give public sanction to “lifestyles” that are gravely sinful and harmful to the common good of our city…………

As Roman Catholics, there’s no question that it’s our sacred duty before Almighty God to vote against any amendment to the City Charter that undermines marriage. Every

single Catholic has an absolute moral obligation to oppose sexual immorality and defend the Sacrament of Matrimony, instituted by Jesus Christ Himself. Moreover, there is now a group calling itself “El Pasoans for Equality” whose homosexual agenda is in direct conflict with the truth and the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Holy Church. No Catholic may participate in or support this group. Doing so would mean placing oneself outside of communion with the Catholic Church.

In summary, the maleficent agenda which lurks behind the actions of City Council and has given rise to the group “El Pasoans for Equality” is an affront to God, our Catholic religion, human reason, marriage and the family.

This homosexual agenda is in direct violation of: (1) the Sixth and Ninth Commandments, (2) the infallible moral teachings of the Catholic Church (Catechism #2357), (3) natural law and the most rudimentary moral code, (4) recent pronouncements by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (Dec. 29, 1975; Oct. 1, 1986; July 23, 1992; June 3, 2003), and (5) the 2009 pastoral letter on marriage by our nation’s Catholic bishops.

Jesus Christ’s greatest gift to the world is Himself, inseparably united to His Holy Catholic Church. His infinite love becomes incarnate in the sacramental life of the Church.

Holy Mother Church has a great, wondrous and tender love for all her children, regardless of “sexual orientation.” She is committed to treating all persons with love, dignity, and respect. However, the Church is also categorically opposed to sinful actions.

Jesus Christ’s truth radiates forth in the teachings of His Church. If any person is engaging in sinful sexual activity, we Catholics are called to practice love and compassion, above all, by leading the person to the truth, and helping the sinner to renounce sinful behavior.

Remember, the supreme law of the Church is the salvation of souls!

As you can see, Fr. Rodriguez gives a very clear, necessarily forceful exposition on Catholic Doctrine.  The Church does not wish to “punish,” or “persecute” gays – it wants to save their eternal souls. It wants what is best for them, and strives to inform all people, all of us sinners, how to lead lives more pleasing to God through the Doctrine that has been revealed through Sacred Scripture (~18 specific prohibitions on homosexual acts) and Sacred Tradition (a 2000 year rejection of homosexual activity as sinful).

Fr. Rodriguez needs your help.  It appears he is not being treated well.  Some of his brother priests have gone so far as to declare him a heretic or schismatic.  Would you, in your charity, consider sending a brief, supportive, non-ranting note to Fr. Rodriguez, indicating your support for his efforts?  Would you consider sending a note to his bishop, without calling him out or attacking him, indicating your support for Fr. Rodriguez?  This can do wonders.  If hundreds of letters arrive at the chancery in El Paso, it will not go unnoticed.  The relevant addresses are below:

Pretty good video – the nominally agnostic Brit commentator/U-2 passenger seems at a loss for words when confronted with the august majesty of creation.  If he thinks that’s overwhelming, he should try Grace:

Nerd talk – the U-2 obviously climbed well above 70k ft, because when the multi-function display shows 70k altitude, the sky was pretty black, but later on, it’s really black.  USAF won’t confirm/deny U-2 ultimate altitude, but it’s reckoned to be in nearer to 90k ft.
