What the new translation will be like March 25, 2011

We all know that a new, vastly improved translation from the Latin will be used in our parishes starting this Advent.  For a taste of how the prayers will be improved, compare today’s collect with the new one.

Current prayer:

God our Father,
your Word became mand and was born of the Virgin Mary,
may we become more like Jesus Christ,
whom we acknowledge as our redeemer, God and man

New translation:

O God, who willed that your Word
should take on the reality of human flesh
in the womb of the Virgin Mary,
grant, we pray,
that we, who confess our Redeemer to be God and man,
may merit to become partakers even in His divine nature.

So we go from the very prosaic ‘become more like Jesus Christ,’ to ‘partakers even of His divine nature.’  A little more poetic, a little more spiritual and uplifting, perhaps?  I don’t feel this new prayer is obscure, or “difficult to say,” it’s beautiful.  I look forward to hearing such prayers every day!

Have a great Feast of the Annunciation weekend!

or, in chant:

My piddling personal problems aside, today is the Feast of the Annunciation!  Get your Angelus on!

Crusader Cat approved!

Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae
Et concepit Spiritu Sancto

Ave Maria gratia plena dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Ecce ancilla Domini
Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum

Ave Maria……..

Et Verbum caro factum est
Et habitavit in nobis

Ave Maria…….

Amen.
