Via Culturewarnotes, Cardinal Canizares calls for return to the receipt of Communion kneeling, and on the tongue:

Spanish Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera recently recommended that Catholics receive Communion on the tongue, while kneeling.

It is to simply know that we are before God himself and that He came to us and that we are undeserving,” the prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments said in an interview with CNA during his visit to Lima, Peru.

The cardinal’s remarks came in response to a question on whether Catholics should receive Communion in the hand or on the tongue.

He recommended that Catholics “receive Communion on the tongue and while kneeling.”

Receiving Communion in this way, the cardinal continued, “is the sign of adoration that needs to be recovered. I think the entire Church needs to receive Communion while kneeling.”……..

If we trivialize Communion, we trivialize everything, and we cannot lose a moment as important as that of receiving Communion, of recognizing the real presence of Christ there, of the God who is the love above all loves, as we sing in a hymn in Spanish

On a related note, there has been a vague but persistent rumor on many blogs, including several of note with very strong reputations, that Pope Benedict XVI is strongly considering ending the indult for Communion in the hand – right now, on his summer vacation.  Would that cause a violent reaction?  Would you willingly switch to receiving on the tongue, preferably kneeling, if you do not already do so?

Two strong statements from Cardinals, two days in a row.

DANGIT! “Pandamania” VBS programs highly problematic July 28, 2011

Almost all ‘large, suburban parishes’ use VBS materials protestant in origin.  That, right there, should be enough to dissuade Catholics from participating.  But even though these fundamentally protestant programs are modifed and ‘Catholicized’ by various publishers, numerous problems remain.  This year’s VBS is called “Pandamania,’ and the problems are legion:

PandaMania, which is a protestant program for children adapted for Catholics. My reader sent a link from a homeschooling blog which points out all sorts of red flags, though.

One of the “People of Faith” cards, for instance, features Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit scientist whose theological ideas are suspect at best (the rest in the set appear to be saints, which makes much more sense). A bizarre choice.

The “Connecting Kids to Justice” portion of the Pandamania program worries me more. According to the PandaMania website,

Connecting Kids to Justice is a feature that focuses on raising awareness of Catholic social teaching and various social issues … [and] will highlight the Catholic Climate Covenant [For crying out loud!  Can we stop with the – totally discredited – leftism!] initiative.

The Catholic Climate Covenant is an initiative of the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change which seeks to show respect for God’s creation by focusing on the link between creation and poverty embodied in the life and ministry of Saint Francis and the words of the Psalmist: “The earth is the Lord’s and all it holds” (Psalm 24:1). [I think that’s supposed to say……’link between climate change and poverty.’  Only, there isn’t any link, because there isn’t any climate change, except that we’ve had since the beginning, and known as ‘weather.’]

Okay, but the link my reader forwarded explains why the organizations that make up the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change are the last people you’d want to be involved, even indirectly, in presenting the Faith to your children. [Because they are almost uniformly heterodox] It’s not a matter of politics—these are organizations which flagrantly reject the Church’s teaching on contraception and abortion, here and in the third world. Even an indirect association with them is scandalous, and it’s not clear how direct the association actually is. [Knowing how these Church bureaucracies work, and their many tentacles, I bet it ain’t all that indirect]

The link focuses on what is problematic in the program (and man, that panda is annoying); and the Pandamania website itself makes the program look somewhere between useless and dreadful (“What happens when a pack of fun-loving pandas invades your church?” Erm, I’d call 911 and the Knights of Columbus). Two thousand years of top-flight scholarship and divine inspiration, and the best we can offer is … wacky pandas who may or may not be advocating for abortion? I looked hard for some reason Catholics would want to get involved with PandaMania, but I’m left distressed that Our Sunday Visitor is endorsing this program. [I’m not surprised.  OSV is not an orthodox publisher.]
I, like Joe at Defend Us In Battle, apologize for not getting on this earlier.  I saw the VBS materials, I knew of their protestant origin, but I didn’t take the time to dig in.  Our family actually participated at a local VBS several years ago, and it was, in spite of much hard work on the part of volunteers and some parish staff, not very productive or helpful, and we haven’t been back.   Year in and year out, almost all VBS programs use the same materials that are designed by a large protestant publisher with the intent of making some money by getting as many churches to ‘standardize’ on them, as possible.  The materials are possible with churches because they provide a framework for VBS without too much effort by parish staff.  But to put things into perspective, quickly, this VBS teaches about leading saint-like figures in the Church.  Who is their first, their prime representative of this august group?  Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, whose writings on theology have been condemned by the Church.  That’s not just a bad choice – it’s subversive. I don’t know if it is intentionally so, but……….

For hardcore Cath0lics, folks really trying to live the Faith……..I’d recommend staying away from parish VBS programs, now and for the foreseeable future. I apologize for not having dug into this program sooner.

Bishop Hubbard and Seton’s ‘gay ministry’ July 28, 2011

Bishop Howard Hubbard, the long time and, I am sorry to say, disastrously heterodox bishop of Albany, NY, is going to celebrate a Mass for the national convention of something called the “Catholic” Association for Lesbian and Gay Ministry.  As reported by Thomas Peters at CatholicVote:

Bishop Hubbard’s association with the “Catholic” Association for Lesbian & Gay Ministry presents a scandal to members of his whole diocese, who are being dutifully informed of his activities in their parish bulletins (imagine having to explain this news item to your kids?). Numerous distressed Catholics from the diocese emailed me to alert me to this story. It’s not the first time they’ve found themselves in the position of trying to figure out what on earth their bishop is up to.

What he’s up to, is what he’s been up to for over 30 years – he’s destroying the Faith in Albany through his heterodox left wing views, guided by that false and illusory ‘spirit’ of Vatican II.  Peters had to issue an update to his post, because, apparently, some commenters claimed that this “Catholic” Association for Lesbian and Gay Ministry was just a really wonderful and faithful Catholic organization.  Peters easily finds extensive evidence this is not the case.  Peters adds these comments:

As I’ve written before, groups and individuals that dissent from the Church’s teaching on these issues are smart enough to hide it from plain view. The real damage happens in the actual encounters and private sessions they host (where they are careful to exclude persons who actually agree with the Church’s teaching).

I think it says a lot about what they are attempting to do when they are forced to be deceptive about how they accomplish it.

I wrote a year ago  about the ‘gay ministry’ at St. Elizabeth Seton parish in Plano using materials that were counter to the Faith.  This ministry, supported by now departed pastor Msgr. Henry Petter and called ‘Outstretched Hands,’ is still using these ‘Lets Talk About Homosexuality’ materials in support of this “outreach” group.  Judging from the parish website, I conclude that this “outreach” group is oriented not towards encouraging gays to live in chastity in accord with the beliefs of the Church, and may even encourage ‘changing’ Church Doctrine regarding homosexuality and homosexual acts, and promoting the view that homosexuals should never be condemned for the acts they commit by anyone in the Church.  On the Seton website, there is this statement regarding the “mission statement” of the this gay ministry: “Trusting in God’s Grace, we look forward to the fulfillment of our vision of a church that will joyfully accept and embrace All God’s Children.”  I don’t take this statement to mean embracing gays who repent of homosexual activities and strive to live chaste lives, I take it to mean embracing homosexuals who are deeply embued in the lifestyle and confirming them in that lifestyle.  In the ‘frequently asked questions’ section of the web page, there are allusions that unchanging, unchangeable Church Doctrine on homosexuality may, in fact, change, due to “progressive revelation of the Spirit,”  in addition to novel and heterodox interpretations of Sacred Scripture. And the apparently still being used ‘Let’s Talk About Homosexuality’ materials make plain that homosexual acts are just great, and endorses gays simulating marriage being recognized as equivalent to “real” marriage by law.

If all the above is correct, and I have no reason to believe it is not,  it would appear the emphasis of ‘Outstretched Hands’ is to confirm gays in their homosexuality, including homosexual acts, and does not provide a strong call to chastity, or embrace them with the true love that is the Truth Christ has revealed through His Church.  It exchanges comfortable political views and soft sentimentality for the sometimes hard Truth that has been revealed, and has been unchanging, through 2000 years of Church history.  I remind that ALL CATHOLICS are called to chastity throughout their lives.  Homosexual acts and the active homosexual lifestyle preclude chastity.  I don’t know if gays are ‘born that way.’  There is no no strong evidence that is so.  But we are all born with a fallen nature that predisposes us to sin.  Some have more tendency to sin than others.  Failing to correct the sinner is a grave moral defect.  This failure is, in fact, a sin itself.  We have so  much misplaced sentiment in the Church today – permissiveness masquerades as tolerance, sentimentality for love, lies for Truth.  We must cling fast to the Church and its Rock – that is our only sure guide.  Railing against that Truth only brings misery.

There is a new pastor at Seton.  I pray that Msgr. Bradley reviews, personally and in detail, the ‘Outstretched Hands’ ministry.  If it fully endorses Catholic Doctrine and encourages chastity at all times, it could be a great tool for God’s Holy Church.  Perhaps it is strongly orthodox, and the webpage and anecdotal evidence I’ve heard is simply out of date.  Perhaps a change was made last year in response to my original blog posts (although Msgr. Petter refuted that possiblity via e-mail, at the time).  If not, I pray that the folks at Seton strongly consider bringing in COURAGE to overhaul their gay ministry.  Courage is a very strong Catholic organization, and one of the few ministries that truly serves homosexuals with mercy, charity, truth, and justice.

Dallas cop with ties to St. Mark needs help July 28, 2011

Dallas police office and Iraq war vet Andrew Litz is suffering severe seizures, headaches, and other problems, likely as a result of being in a Humvee that struck a land mine in Iraq in 2005.  He hasn’t been able to work for weeks, and he is out of sick time and apparently not on disability.  He has a stay at home wife and 2  young children.  He is having a hard time making ends meet.  His parents are long time parishioners of St. Mark in Plano.  He and his family need help.  His brother officers are holding a car wash for him in Richardson this Saturday, at 9 am, at the Lone Eagle Fighting Arts School at 525 W. Arapaho Rd.  There is a map at the link, but it’s a little west of Custer on the south side of Arapaho.

I know it hasn’t rained in 17 years, but even if your car doesn’t need a wash, it would still be a very nice thing (and a corporal work of mercy) to support this effort.

NASA data blows gaping hole in global warming alarmism July 28, 2011

New data analyzed from satellites records of earth temperatures over the past 11 years shows that far more heat is released into space than alarmist climate models predict.  In fact, the data shows that global warming as predicted by the UN and other groups supporting a massive socialization of the economy to fight global warming cooling climate change is not occuring:

NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth’s atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed.

Study co-author Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer flying on NASA’s Aqua satellite, reports that real-world data from NASA’s Terra satellite contradict multiple assumptions fed into alarmist computer models.

“The satellite observations suggest there is much more energy lost to space during and after warming than the climate models show,” Spencer said in a July 26 University of Alabama press release. “There is a huge discrepancy between the data and the forecasts that is especially big over the oceans.”

In addition to finding that far less heat is being trapped than alarmist computer models have predicted, the NASA satellite data show the atmosphere begins shedding heat into space long before United Nations computer models predicted.

The new findings are extremely important and should dramatically alter the global warming debate.

Scientists on all sides of the global warming debate are in general agreement about how much heat is being directly trapped by human emissions of carbon dioxide (the answer is “not much”). However, the single most important issue in the global warming debate is whether carbon dioxide emissions will indirectly trap far more heat by causing large increases in atmospheric humidity and cirrus clouds. Alarmist computer models assume human carbon dioxide emissions indirectly cause substantial increases in atmospheric humidity and cirrus clouds (each of which are very effective at trapping heat), but real-world data have long shown that carbon dioxide emissions are not causing as much atmospheric humidity and cirrus clouds as the alarmist computer models have predicted.

How much impact will this new data have on groups like the Catholic Climate Covenant?  The answer – none!  “Data? We don’t need no stiiiiinking data!” It’s an article of faith, a sacred shibolleth, among those of a certain political disposition that GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL!, caused by people, and the only thing we can do about it is to give control of our economy to socialist bureaucrats and go back to an 18th century level of existence.  If a few billion people have to die along the way, well…..it’s just a sacrifice Gaia demands.

There was another scientist who had an article out recently, can’t remember where, stating that, in serious scientific communities (that is, not those with a political agenda and growing rich off global warming research grants), global warming as a theory has been disproven for 20 years.  But we never hear that in the media, because it does not fit the ‘narrative.’

RELATED: The “scientician” who claimed that polar bears were drowning in their thousands due to melting artic ice caused by GLOBAL WARMING! has been placed on administrative leave for scientific fraud, because his claims have been shown to be completely false.  He had no data to support his claims – he just made it up.  Like the hockey stick, and ‘hide the decline.’
