I went to Mass this morning at a nearby parish. I really liked the readings.  The Old Testament one, from Deuteromony, hinged on this statement: “Therefore, I teach you the statutes and decrees as the Lord, my God, has commanded me, that you may observe  them in the land you are entering to occupy.  Observe tehm carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations…..”

The Gospel (Mt 5:17-19) was even more apropos to our current cultural circumstances: “Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.  He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Wow.  Our Blessed Lord certainly knew human nature.  He knew fallen men, either on their own volition or under some dark influence, would reject the Truth He revealed through His Church.  And so He proclaimed very plainly what would occur to those who rejected the Gospel Truth.

The priest at Mass began to turn these readings towards current events – in particular, towards the massive assault on the rights

of the Church that is the Obamacare mandate.  And that’s when the panic occurred.  Some 70-ish year old gentleman I’ve seen at Mass many times got up and walked out.  He came back after the sermily.  He was steamed.  He didn’t want to hear about contraception.  OK…..it was a pretty mild panic.  I could see a half dozen or so other folks expressing their seated dismay in milder forms.  And these are the daily Mass goers!  The gentleman who apparently does not want to hear about the wrongness of this assault on the Church and the evil that drives it did receive the Blessed Sacrament.

My preference would have been for the priest to focus on the Gospel reading, how Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition establish the Doctrine of the Faith which is inerrant and which must be accepted – with the assent of full faith – by all Catholics.  Instead, he inexplicably stated that today’s readings were a rare occurrence where the OT reading somehow “trumped” the Gospel, or words to that effect.  He focused on our need, as a Church, to be that “nation” admired for its wisdom in following the law – the Doctrine of the Faith.  That’s fine – but the Word of Christ has so much more effect, and is so much more specifically addressed to our current day, when apostate Catholics proclaim a false gospel and when the Church is under such terrific assault from a secular pagan culture that even its fundamental ability to operate in public is under question.  And this situation has come about because those who have fallen away from the Law – from the Word, from the Truth – have aided, abetted, and in many occurrences brought about the culture that is now so hostile to the Faith that it seeks to impose its mores on the Church through governmental fiat.

The exhortation in defense of the rights of the Church, and against the evil that is contraception/sterilization/abortion was really very mild.  The priest stated that the mandate was wrong, but never really attacked the root evils just listed.  And yet, some folks did not want to hear even that.  We have so very much work ahead of us, as a Church.  Catechesis has been so poor and incomplete for so long, that it will take many hard years of effort to improve the situation measurably.

Now is the time to start.  That’s reason #2 why I started this blog.  Hopefully, it helps at times.

Our Blessed Mother Mary, pray for us!
