You, too, can die on Mars! June 6, 2012

No, that’s really the plan.  A one way journey to Mars without the possibility of return.  By a private company.  They appear to plan to use modified Dragon spacecraft from Space X.  Would a trip to Mars be worth it to you, even if you knew you’d never see earth again?

If these guys can even lift their satellite to Mars, I’ll be astounded.  The very cheapest a mission to Mars might cost is about $300 million.  Andy they’ll need a dozen or more missions just to get started, plus hardware design and fabrication and all the rest.  I would guess $12 billion, minimum, just to lift the hardware there.  Then there is constant resupply, on which lives depend, at the expense of probably another $0.6 – 1 billion a year.

Anyway, just kind a silly thing for Wednesday afternoon.  Reading through the website, these guys sound like enthusiastic, but very unprepared, amateurs.

Would we be accompanied by an authentic, orthodox, traditional Catholic priest? Will there be a ban on political correctness up there? Nice to dream about.

Hey, I like that angle! I might do it under those circumstances, provided I get a fair number of years to reform!
