Another prayerful meditation on the Blessed Sacrament, and the thankfulness we should have in receiving it, from his awesome Ascetical Works Volume VI, The Holy Eucharist:

O God of love, dost Thou, then, so much desire to dispense Thy favors to us and yet are so little anxious to obtain them?  Oh, what sorrows we shall feel at the hour of death, when we think of this negligence so pernicious to our souls! O my Lord, forget, I beseech Thee, all that is past; for the future, with Thy help, I will prepare myself better, by endeavoring to detach  my affections from everything that prevents me from receiving all those graces which Thou desirest to bestow upon me. And after Communion I will lift up my heart to Thee as much as I can, in order to obtain Thy help that I may advance in Thy love, – oh, grant me grace to accomplish this. O my Jesus, how negligent have i hitherto been in loving Thee! The time which Thou in Thy mercy mayest yet allot to me in this life, is the time to prepare myself for death and to make amends by my love for the offences I have committed against Thee.  I will spend it entirely in lamenting my sins and in loving Thee. I love Thee, my Jesus, my love; I love Thee, my only Good; have pity on me, and do not forsake me.

And thou, O Mary, my hope, do not cease to help me by thy holy intercession!

…..this ties in with the Mayor of Boston, whom I reported on yesterday, castigating Chick-Fil-A, going so far as to send a personal letter just absolutely blasting Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy to the Chick-Fil-A headquarters.  That mayor then turned around and held a ceremony for a new mosque, on whose board of directors sits an imam who has stated, publicly and repeatedly, how much he desires to see gays killed by hanging, being thrown from a precipice, etc.

Actually, the text in the picture is not right, the CEO said that he supported the traditional definition of marriage, but in the current, TV-propagandized unthinking – heck, unable to think – environment, supporting marriage and the constant definition thereof now equates to being “opposed to homosexuality.”

Reason and consistency don’t seem particularly strong suits for the “reality based” crowd, do they?  In fact, the lock step conformity in evidence irrespective of logic or reason is particularly damning.

This Thursday on the radio, I plan on devoting quite a bit of time to this subject, and especially in developing a proper Catholic understanding of the challenging gift of sexuality and its proper place in relationships and the societal understanding/practice of the same.

This coming Friday, August 3rd is the First Friday for August.  The Carmelites of the Infant Jesus of Prague in Dallas invite you to their chapel for a night of Adoration, prayer, and penance.  Traditional Latin Mass is offered at 8pm and 3am.  There is a final Mass at 7am (NO).  Confessions are heard prior to and after the 8pm Mass.  Prayer goes on all night from 3pm till 7am.

Mother Mary Regina has asked for as many to come as possible to pray for our nation as it seemingly heads into the abyss.  Pray for our Church, as well, and especially for her leadership to be faithful and true.

I read the other day that Archbishop Lefebvre stated that every Diocese needed its own seminary and its own Carmel. I couldn’t agree more.  All the details for the First Friday in the attachment here————–>   Allnightcarmelites_july_aug_sept_ 2012

Food and drink used to be available, but with Vicki’s passing I’m not sure that will be the case.

The Holy Face devotion is also at the Carmelite Chapel on Sunday at 3:30pm.

You can obtain a Plenary Indulgence – the Portincula Indulgence – one of St. Francis’ many great gifts to the Church – this Wednesday and Thursday Aug 1-2, between noon Wednesday and midnight Thursday by reciting the Apostle’s Creed, the Our Father and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, along with the usual conditions:

* Sacramental confession (during eight days before or after the above dates)

* Assist at  Mass and receive the Eucharist on the indulgenced day

* No attachment to sin (uff da, this is the hard one)

You can offer the prayers for yourself or for a soul suffering in Purgatory.

Good Lord……CCHD grantees support HHS Mandate July 31, 2012

You want to know what the real problem with this is?  It’s completely, totally expected.  I’m not even a little surprised.  Gee, an organization (Catholic Campaign for Human Development – CCHD) that was created specifically for nothing but to fund radical left-wing political action groups constantly finds itself counter to the Doctrine of the Faith and the rights of the Church.  I’m shocked.  It’s not like the left has been waging an brutal, 200+ year war against the Church or anything, is it?  As the article says, for the left, there are no permanent allies, only convenient sources of funding.

To put the story in a nutshell, CCHD has handed out grants to numerous Saul Alinsky radical left wing “social justice” organizations for years.  The Church has been instrumental in creating, and keeping in operation, many of these social justice groups, being one of their prime means of monetary support.  But now that Obama has directly attacked the Church via this HHS contraception mandate, these groups are totally silent – largely because they agree with Obama’s contraception (and abortion, and gay marriage, etc., ad nauseum) program.  Obama is their boy, he’s a creature of these Church funded social justice groups, of course they’re going to support him!  But it turns out that CCHD, in its 2011-12 grants, gave approximately 40% of its $7.6 million in grants to Alinskyite groups:

In fact, the CCHD still hasn’t “gotten” it.  Its 2011-2012 grants have been awarded and about $7.6 million was distributed among 192 organizations.  CCHD remains the organization it has always been: a vehicle for moving Catholic charity into left-wing, progressive political organizations.
Here is a little fiscal analysis to explain that statement: during the 1990s, the Catholic charity gave approximately 33% of its annual national grants to Alinskyian community organizing efforts.  These Alinskyian community organizations fell into five main networks: the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), Gamaliel, Pacific Institute for Community Organizing (PICO), Direct Action and Research Training Center (DART), and the now-disgraced Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).  There were additional grants to organizations from other Alinskyian networks but these were the major culprits.
The 2011-2012 grant list is even more pronounced in this emphasis.  Of the 192 grantees, about 110 are unequivocally Alinskyian, raising the percentage of CCHD national grants to Alinskyian community organizing efforts to over half.  This is no improvement.
Among the larger, faith-based networks – that is, among those that organize within religious congregations and thereby do double damage – 31 of the current crop of grantees belong to the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) network, 22 grantees belong to the PICO network, and 24 belong to the Gamaliel network.  (A few of these organizations have disassociated with their parent network but retain their essential ideological thrust so have been included, as well.)
Considered from a dollar perspective, that’s $1,225,000 to the IAF, $865,000 to PICO, and $999,500 to Gamaliel this year – which is $3,089,500 in total, for this year.  That’s a lot of money to bring organizers into Catholic parishes, drumming up support for programs like, oh, say… Obamacare with its HHS mandate to force Catholics to either violate their consciences or get out of the healthcare field.
Year after year, scandal after scandal, and still CCHD is around.  Now CCHD funds groups that are working directly against the Church on a matter of critical, vital import – the very right of the Church to exist and proclaim the Truth Jesus Christ has revealed without compromise on matters gravely evil (dispensing abortifacients and contraceptives).  But we should not be surprised at this, for as I said at the top, the radical left has been the inveterate enemy of the Church for hundreds of years!  Everywhere the left ascends to power, the Church invariably suffers.
Why is there also this assumption that to “empower the poor” means to fund left wing groups?  Why can’t apolitical groups be used to really empower people by training them in skills and capabilities so that they will no longer be poor?  Why is directing more government money to the poor virtually always the “answer” the Church in this country gives for addressing poverty?  Haven’t we seen over the the last several decades centuries all of human history that this never creates a sustained improvement in the relative wealth of the poor?  Such wealth transfer schemes were a major factor in the collapse of the Roman Empire, for crying out loud.
Moreover, why do Catholics continue to funnel money into this organization?  And why do we continue to see the Church fight against itself in the most fundamental ways?  The bishops decry the evil of being forced to dispense contraception on the one hand, while funding groups that advocate for such “free contraception/abortion” on the other?  It boggles the mind.

…..was a shrunken, dead corpse of a Church which was exhausted and irrelevant to the modern world.  Look at this!  Does this look dead!  Excuse the German – not sure what this was from, apparently a German movie of some kind, but they neatly cut in Venerable Pope Pius XII giving an audience in St. Peter’s:

Glorious!  Sublime!  And yet, a few years later, many of the people – especially the prelates –  present here would gleefully go along with the chucking of so much of the Tradition represented in this video.

I’ve been reading a book that tries to explain how this massive shift, this radical change in practice, could come to pass.  I think it is right in some areas, but massively, almost hilariously wrong in others.  I’ll do a fisking of the book when I’m finished in a few weeks.  I know, I’m slow, but I read about 15 books a few pages at a time each day, praying for inspiration.

Confusing, to say the least.

Voris on the persecution of Traditional Catholics July 30, 2012

He  just hits this one out of the park, with the lights exploding and sparks showering down.

Michael Voris is, I think, growing in appreciation for the traditional Mass and traditional aspects of the Faith.  I hate having to use the adjective “traditional”…….were that it was simply the Mass and the Faith, but I digress.  Voris draws very important distinctions between conservative and traditional, and appearances and reality.  This was my point in discussing the euphoria in some circles over Cordileone’s appointment at Archbishop of San Francisco – while Cordileone may support the TLM to a degree, that doesn’t mean he’s going to lead a radical reformation of the Archdiocese so desperately needed.

This is a very touchy subject, but I am coming to understand that there is a distinction – ranging from slight to immense, depending on the individual – between what is often called traditional Catholicism, and conservative Catholicism.   There is a growing number of conservative bishops, but almost no traditional bishops – none in this country, certainly.  We do have to remember when and how these men were formed, and pray for them, and fast and otherwise mortify ourselves for our Church.  As is said so frequently on another blog, the crisis of the Church is a crisis of bishops.  We desperately need men of heroic virtue in the episcopate.

Check out Michael channeling is inner Walter Cronkite @ 1:15!  Awesome!  Cronkite as a traditional Catholic!  I dig that!  Joking, but he sounded a bit like Cronkite to me for a second or two!

And @ roughly 5:00, Voris is almost certainly talking about Cardinal Dolan.  Interesting.

Thanks to a reader for beating me to my daily watching of Church Militant TV!

……a truly heroic, noble act.  I got Chick-Fil-A.  I did it last week, too.  And I plan on continuing to do so for a while.  Because all Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-Fil-A said, was the utterly unremarkable statement that marriage is between a man and a woman.  If you used to believe that, but now you don’t, if you’ve become “enlightened,” I advise you to turn off your TV set for a while.  You’ve been propagandized to a breathtaking extent.

Mark Steyn had some excellent thoughts on this liberal fascism:

Mayor Menino subsequently backed down and claimed the severed rooster’s head left in Mr. Cathy’s bed was all just a misunderstanding. Yet, when it comes to fighting homophobia on Boston’s Freedom Trail, His Honor is highly selective. As the Boston Herald’s Michael Graham pointed out, Menino is happy to hand out municipal licenses to groups whose most prominent figures call for gays to be put to death. The mayor couldn’t have been more accommodating (including giving them $1.8 million of municipal land) of the new mosque of the Islamic Society of Boston, whose IRS returns listed as one of their seven trustees Yusuf al-Qaradawi. Like President Obama, Imam Qaradawi’s position on gays is in a state of “evolution”: He can’t decide whether to burn them or toss ‘em off a cliff. “Some say we should throw them from a high place,” he told Al-Jazeera. “Some say we should burn them, and so on. There is disagreement … . The important thing is to treat this act as a crime.” Unlike the deplorable Mr. Cathy, Imam Qaradawi is admirably open-minded: There are so many ways to kill homosexuals, why restrict yourself to just one? In Mayor Menino’s Boston, if you take the same view of marriage as President Obama did from 2009 to 2012, he’ll run your homophobic ass out of town. But, if you want to toss those godless sodomites off the John Hancock Tower, he’ll officiate at your ribbon-cutting ceremony.

This inconsistency is very telling. The forces of “tolerance” and “diversity” are ever more intolerant of anything less than total ideological homogeneity. Earlier this year, the Susan G. Komen Foundation – the group that gave us those pink “awareness raising” ribbons for breast cancer – decided to end its funding of Planned Parenthood on the grounds that, whatever its other charms, Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with curing breast cancer. Within hours, the Komen Foundation’s Nancy Brinker had been jumped by her fellow liberals and was strapped to a chair under a light bulb in the basement with her head clamped between two mammogram plates until she recanted. A few weeks back, Mark Regnerus, a sociology professor who “says he’s never voted for a Republican presidential candidate,” published a paper in the journal Social Science Research whose findings, alas, did not conform to the party line on gay parenting. Immediately, the party of science set about ending his career, demanding that he be investigated for “scientific misconduct” and calling on mainstream TV and radio networks to ban him from their airwaves.

As an exercise in sheer political muscle, it’s impressive. But, if you’re a feminist or a gay or any of the other house pets in the Democratic menagerie, you might want to look at Rahm Emanuel’s pirouette, and Menino’s coziness with Islamic homophobia. These guys are about power, and right now your cause happens to coincide with their political advantage. But political winds shift. Once upon a time, Massachusetts burned witches. Now it grills chicken-sandwich homophobes. One day it’ll be something else. Already in Europe, in previously gay-friendly cities like Amsterdam, demographically surging Muslim populations have muted Leftie politicians’ commitment to gay rights, feminism and much else. It’s easy to cheer on the thugs when they’re thuggish in your name. What happens when Emanuel’s political needs change?

There are consequences for actions.  The irreligious left likes to pretend that if they could only destroy Christianity, the world would be a place of enlightened “tolerance,” justice, and peace.  But nature abhors a vacuum, and something will fill the cultural spaces emptied of Christianity.  It might be Islam or it might be just plain ol’ naturalistic barbarism, but something will fill those vacant spaces, and history indicates it won’t be pretty.  In fact, history shows it will likely be horrific beyond the liberal’s imagining.

Steyn is right – it is amazing to see the duplicity in action. The same people who coddle islamists who would murder homosexuals in their thousands  attack the Christian religion which really developed the entire concept of treating all people with compassion, and thus, tolerance, as anti-homosexual bigots.  And all for nothing more than their own political expediency.  Because it will attract donations from the “right” people with the fat pocketbooks, the very notion of liberty and tolerance be damned.  It’s truly sick, and reveals the unholy utilitarian nature of the modern left- a revelation, in fact, which is a bit of a peeling back of the curtain of the kind of nightmare society we would stuck with should Christianity truly be driven from the public square.

And yet, they are the ‘enlightened’ ones.

Pelosi finally to get her due? July 30, 2012

She has been cajoled, counseled, chastised, and prayed for, but she just continues apostasizing.  She has had private, one-on-one condemnations of her positions regarding abortion and a dozen other issues from her bishops (two of them!) and even the Holy Father himself, and yet she continues to make public statements directly counter to the Faith.  Will the appointment of Bishop Salvatore Cordileone finally lead to a reckoning for Nancy Pelosi?  Will some ecclesial discipline finally be meted out to she who has so richly, desperately deserved it?  Will Canon 915 finally be enforced?

Bishop Cordileone is said to be relatively friendly to the traditional practice of the Faith.  He has offered a Pontifical High Mass on more than one occasion, and has assisted at or offered himself the TLM a a number of other occasions.  He is also said to have a very stringent doctrinal belief.  But, I don’t know that things have changed much – overall –  in Oakland in his short time there as ordinary.

I think we on the traditional side of things have a tendency to be impatient.  We see the many problems in the Church and want/demand they be fixed NOW!  And we look back in the past at saintly bishops, men of heroic virtue, who have often been vehicles of great miracles of Grace in their reform efforts.  I don’t know if having such an expectation is unrealistic, or unfair. And in many cases, a bishop might acquire a reputation for orthodoxy that is not really warranted – like Archbishop Jose Gomez.  But we on the outside rarely know the forces the bishops must deal with, especially in a place like San Francisco, nor are we often aware of small but critical steps that may be taken behind the scenes to reform a deformed diocese.

We shall have to wait and see.  I am skeptical in the extreme that any public chastisement will ever come to Pelosi, Sebelius, Mikulski, Roberts, Biden, Kerry, the Kennedy’s, Murkowski, Cuomo, or any of the hundreds of other greater or lesser “Catholic” public figures……..at least for the next 10-15 years or so.  The restoration of the Faith…….such as it is, and if it continues……..will have to advance far more before we’ll see strong action taken like that.  It’s a tragedy, it’s an immense scandal, but I think that’s simply the situation we’re faced with right now.  And there is still the alleged USCCB “prohibition” on any such act being taken by an ordinary, even though the USCCB has no formal authority whatsoever.

But pray for Bishop Cordileone.  Pray he grow in Grace to heroic levels of virtue, and that he leads this key Archdiocese (which forms priests from all over the American West) in a restoration of the True Faith of Jesus Christ and His Holy Church!  Pray that he have the strength to overcome his adversaries, who will be many!  And pray that he be willing to suffer greatly for this inestimable gift we have in the Faith!

One thing I really pray for is that the TLM be greatly liberalized in San Francisco, and that every parish offer the Traditional Mass!  If Bishop Cordileone does that, the rest will take care of itself in time.

Holy Communion is critical to persevere in Divine Grace July 30, 2012

From Volume VI of the Ascetical Works of St. Alphonsus Ligouri, The Holy Eucharist, an exhortation for frequent reception of Holy Communion.  I find daily Mass essential, if I miss Mass for more than a day or so I can really sense the difference.

Holy Communion Obtains for us Perseverance in Divine Grace.

When Jesus comes to the soul in Holy Communion, he brings to it every Grace, and specially the Grace of holy perseverance. This is the principal effect of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, to nourish the soul that receives it with this Food of Life, and to give it great strength to advance into perfection, and to resist those enemies who desire our death. Hence Jesus calls Himself in this Sacrament Heavenly Bread: “I am the living bread which came down from Heaven; if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever (Jn VI:51).  Even as earthly bread sustains the life of the body, so this heavenly bread sustains the life of the soul, by making it persevere in the Grace of God.

Therefore the Council of Trent teaches that Holy Communion is that remedy which delivers us from daily faults and preserves us from mortal sins (Sess XIII. C. 2).  Pope Innocent III writes that Jesus Christ by His Passion delivers us from sins which we might commit. Therefore St. Bonaventure says that sinners must not keep away from Communion because they have been sinners; on the contrary, for this very reason they ought to receive it more frequently; because “the more infirm a person feels himself, the more he is want of a physician.” [only doing so after Confession and being in a state of Grace, of course!]

Prayer based on the above:

Miserable sinner that I am, O Lord, wherefore do I lament my weakness when I consider my many falls from Grace? How was it possible that I should have resisted the assaults of the devil while I stayed away from Thee, who art my strength?  If I had oftener approached the Holy Communion, I should not have been so often overcome by my enemies.  But in future it shall not be so: In Thee, O Lord, have I hoped; I shall not be confounded forever (Ps 30:2). No, I will no longer rely on my own resolution. [This is a big problem for me.  I have a hard time letting go and letting Grace work in me and through me. I have to try to control things, or do things myself.  And thus, I fail so very often, because I am not strong enough to overcome my many sins and failings.  Only Christ is strong enough for that] Thou alone art my hope, O my Jesus; Thou wilt give me strength, that I may not more fall into sin. I am weak but Thou, by Holy Communion, wilt make me strong against every temptation: I can do all things in Him who strengtheneth me (Phil 4:13). Forgive me, O my Jesus, all the offenses I have committed against Thee, of which I repent with my whole heart. I resolve rather to die than ever to offend Thee again; and I trust, in Thy Passion, that Thou wilt give me Thy help to persevere in Thy Grace to the end of my life: In Thee, O Lord, have I hoped; I shall not be confounded forever.

And with St. Bonaventure I will say the same to Thee, O Mary, my Mother: “In Thee, O Lady, have I hoped; I shall not be confounded forever.”

Oh my Mother, my Lady, pray for me!
