Don’t get too excited about this poll August 27, 2012

I have seen reported in a number of places an American Life League (ALL) poll that purports to show that Catholic “support” for Obama is falling rapidly.  From the ALL website:

Washington, D.C. – Between August 15-19 of this year, American Life League commissioned a nationwide telephone survey of 900 self-identified Catholic registered voters. The focus of the survey was Catholic perspectives on the Church and nation. Below are some of the results of the survey.

Only 27 percent of the Catholics surveyed support President Obama. Of those surveyed, 74 percent of Catholic men over the age of 50 do not support Obama, while Obama support among Catholic men under 50 years is only 25 percent. With Catholic women over the age of 50, the president’s support is only 23 percent, with just 31 percent among Catholic women under 50 years.

Well, what do they mean by “support?”  What question was asked?  Most presidential election polls ask if the person surveyed plans to vote for a given person for President, not whether they “support” them.  That could mean almost anything.

I’ve seen other polls that actually show with a slight lead among Catholics – statistically insignificant from the results of the 2008 election, when Catholics went for Obama, incredibly, 54-46.

Further, it is rare for a politically diverse group like the Catholic Church to skew so heavily for, or against, any individual candidate.  I like the idea of tremendous Catholic opposition to Obama, but doubt it is realistic.  It is likely leading questions were asked like “Do you support Obama’s assault on the rights of the Church through the HHS mandate?,” or similar.

I have found ALL’s efforts against abortion, CCHD, and other areas very useful, but this feels like a push poll.  It may well be helpful to the cause, but I doubt it – the vast majority of Catholics never get on blogs or go to sites like ALL, and will never see this data.

Well, what can we say? At the least, Catholic Supporters of Obama are registered to vote–if not signed onto the notion that they should be Catholic first when it comes to assaults on the faith and morals of God’s Church. What an evil time..

Sadly !
When one looks to fellow practicing catholics to support one in promoting truly catholic positions they prove to be , for the most part, a sorry lot.
” Sure , we’re behind you. “. WAY WAY behind you out of sight.
ie unless it costs them nothing to stand up and be counted.
Their : ” We must be tolerant …” being a mere smokescreen for their deep- seated apathy.
Thank God for the rare fired -up ones we do see occasionally.
