Another devastating poll on the US Church October 4, 2013

The results of a recent poll of a small number of Catholics (less than 400) shows how deep the rot in the Church is.  The findings are especially amazing, in that apparently, poor American Katholycs are just beat to death with all the hour’s long sermons they are forced to constantly endure on the subjects of abortion, homosexuality, contraception, and all the other groinal issues. Not.  In point of fact, it is a virtual certitude most all these individuals have NEVER heard a sermon on one of these subjects, and even if they have, it was likely so watered down and milquetoast it wouldn’t have moved them in the slightest.

But, irrespective, and echoing Pope Francis, over 2/3 of American “Catholics” wish the Church would stop beating them down with all this incessant, 24/7 talk on abortion, homosexuality, and contraception:

The survey, released The survey, released Friday (Oct. 4), by Quinnipiac University, shows that two in three (68 percent) adult Catholics questioned said they agreed with the pontiff’s observation that the church has become too focused on issues such as homosexuality, abortion and contraception.  [This actually makes perfect sense.  For the soul lost in sin – and embracing error is certainly sin – being reminded even at all of the Truth is very painful. Ergo, even the occasional pronouncements from previous pontiffs, or an odd bishop or cardinal, were simply too much to bear.  That is to say…….they don’t want to hear abou these subjects, EVER.  Because any mention of them reminds the hearer that he rejects what the Church believes. But on another level, we see yet again how much MORE formed by the media/culture “Catholics” are than they are by the Church.  The media says the Church focuses far too much on these matters, ergo, it must be true.  It is amazing how many lies people believe on an almost constant basis due to media malfeasance and propagandizing.]

Just 23 percent disagreed, and the breakdown was virtually the same across age groups and among both weekly Mass-goers and those who attend church less frequently.  [Which makes my point – those who go to Mass aren’t getting this “obsession” from their experience in the pews, they are getting it from the media.  I wondwer what percentage of these 392 Catholics surveyed have even darkened the door of a church in the past 10 years?]

The national poll — conducted the last week of September — also showed that American Catholics have a favorable (53 percent) or very favorable (36 percent) opinion of Francis, and just 4 percent view him negatively.  [Ahem.  This, yet again, proves my point about how almost all “Catholics” are formed much more by the media and superficial presentations than by anything else]

American Catholics liked what they heard when Pope Francis said the church should stop talking so much about issues like gay marriage, abortion and contraception,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

The survey also found that Catholic support for same-sex marriage continues to be strong, as other surveys have found, with six-in-10 Catholics approving of gay marriage and 31 percent opposed. That’s slightly above the national 56 percent approval rating.  [Yes, among religious people, “Catholics” favor the destruction of marriage at higher rates than any group but the liberal protestants they have become.  Once again, these “Catholics” are much more formed by the media than they are by the Church, leading them to embrace most every liberal shibolleth.]

But the latest research also indicates that support for same-sex marriage only drops slightly among weekly churchgoers, to 53 percent, with 40 percent opposed[Now, is it sensical that if these people were getting constantly formed in the Faith in opposition to this gross immorality and destruction of marriage as the building block of society, that these numbers would be so similar?  If people were hearing strong, cogent arguments on why marriage can only be between a man and a woman frequently from the pulpit, would the amount of support from non-church going and church going Catholics be the same?  This underlines the point, and stresses the schizophrenia – “Catholics” don’t even know their Church, they are almost never challenged in homilies, and they get their understanding of the Church from the media.  Low information voters, indeed.]

Awww……a negative thought to leave you over the weekend.  Sorry, but this is just sooo revealing.  And it bodes nightmarishly bad for the future.  The very weak to non-existent practice of the Faith by “Catholics” today means their children – if they bother to have any – will not be Catholic tomorrow.  It means the Church will continue to contract and collapse.  It means the Church will continue to lose influence.  And all the saccharine pronouncements from the highest levels will not change that a bit – in fact, if the past 45 years are any indicator,  they will only exacerbate the crisis and make it worse.

I predict, mass Hispanic immigration or no and barring some great miracle, 40 years from now, should I live so long, the Church in the US will be much smaller than it is today.

If being Catholic becomes in any way subject to a real, sustained persecution, look for most of the tens of millions who wear the Catholic label as a sort of fashion accoutrement to drop that label in a hearbeat. In reality, they already have, but for them, right now, the Catholic label must still carry some internal, perhaps cultural, familial, or historical cache.

Do you think Pope Francis’ rhetoric (which is highly inconsistent, he made a strong statement defending priestly celibacy and consecrated virginity today) will move many souls back to a real practice of the Faith?

Today, part 2.  See part 1 here:

We have to practice Mortification: set yourself a goal: eveyday, at least 3 small mortifications.  For example: take your shower cooler than you would prefer – and (unless you’re sick) turn it on cold at end, while turning around for 1 or 2 or 3 Glory Bes.

  • Practice custody of the eyes by making yourself look away from an interesting store display or a billboard, or by setting down a book right when you tget to an interesting part and picking it up later
  • Place a smooth pebble or bean in one shoe one day adn in the other shoe the next
  • At every meal, season a piece of food in a way you don’t like – and eat it anyway
  • take more of what you don’t like, less of what you like
  • cut back on or totally eliminate sweets; use half the sugar or cream in your coffee, when you’re in a restaurant, find what you really want, and order something else

And stay busy!  The Fathers of the Church teach that for one devil that tempts a busy man, there are a legion of devils that attack an idle man. We have to stay busy with useful thoughts and useful labor. Lounging around is asking for trouble.  Stay busy.

How do we move our minds?

First thing: we should say a little prayer along these lines: Precious Blood, wash over me, because this will drive the devil away.

Next, we pray: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, St. Maria Goretti, Guardian Angel, HELP ME!

Since our appetites are being drawn towards a pleasurable good – but one that is mortally sinful – we need to replace the tempting images in our imagination with something that is very enjoyable, and very easy to picture and that ahs absolutely nothing to do with the temptation.  We just derail the temptation by substituting a “legal” pleasure.  So, think about canoeing in Montana, because what could be better than that?   [Well, I might say, deer hunting in the Hill Country, or whatever moves you……….]

We also have to move our body.  That’s easy. Just move. If you’re laying down, get up. If you’re sitting, stand up.  If you’re standing, take a few steps. Think of this combination, of moving your mind and moving your body, as a spiritual wrestling move or a spiritual martial arts move: the more you practice it, the easier it becomes to drive off temptations and evil thoughts……

If you aren’t successful right away, keep invoking Our Lady…….

And remember, as long as we’re fighting, we’re not sinning.

Our Lady of the Expectation

Been involved in an annulment?  Faced with a divorce you did not want?  Mary’s Advocates would like to hear from you.  Here is their communique:

Upset over annulment?  We’d love to hear from you!

Were you served with an unwanted annulment filing? Are you in a state of disbelief that so many marriages are annulled in the English speaking world every year? (95% of U.S. decisions 2010) Would you like to see the Church better uphold the dignity and sanctity of marriage in this regard? If you answer yes, please answer our survey so we can let Pope Francis and others know what’s really going on.

There  is a widespread opinion that many US dioceses have become, in essence, annulment mills. Certainly, the United States produces more annulments every year than the rest of the world, combined.  A very high percentage of those cases that are appealed to Rome are subsequently overturned.  There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that there are systematic abuses in how the US tribunal process works, and that the process is really oriented not towards keeping couples together, limiting divorce, or in dispassionately trying to determine the true validity of marriages that end in divorce, but in regularizing 2nd marriages.  This process has gotten so out of hand that some Catholics now openly wonder if ALL marriages are only conditionally valid, with affirmation of that validity only being made if the couples stay together until death.  Such, in a nutshell, is the mockery presently being made of the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony in this nation.

If you’ve been through the process and want to share your experience, it looks like this group Mary’s Advocates is serious about trying to reform the tribunal system.

DDLGs head will explode – Obama threatens priest-chaplains with arrest if they violate shutdown October 4, 2013

I don’t read conservative sites much anymore except for Ace O Spades, but Ace has been going to town on all the “shutdown theater” the Obama Administration is conducting to try to turn public opinion against the GOP in this government shutdown.  Things like the WWII Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, which used to be open 24/7 with no staff, are not closed by gates and have guards present where there were never any before.  They are trying to punish the GOP and its base for having the temerity to not continue to fund this nation into oblivion.  Even privately funded parks with some minor federal connection – like Colonial Williamsburg – are being shut down.  One Park Service employee of the now shuttered Mount Vernon (also privately funded) was informed they were to make this shutdown as painful as possible – he termed this tactic “disgusting.”

Part and parcel of shutting down popular but very low cost services is this: apparently, as part of the shutdown, the Obama Admin is threatening to ARREST and prosecute Catholic priests who are also military chaplains, if they try to serve the troops on military bases during the shutdown:

In a stunning development, some military priests are facing arrest if they celebrate mass or practice their faith on military bases during the federal government shutdown.

“With the government shutdown, many [government service] and contract priests who minister to Catholics on military bases worldwide are not permitted to work – not even to volunteer,” wrote John Schlageter, the general counsel for the Archdiocese for the Military Services USA, in an op-ed this week. “During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so.”

According to its website, the Archdiocese for the Military Services “provides the Catholic Church’s full range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to those in the United States Armed Forces.”

In his piece, Schlageter worries about this restriction as Sunday nears. “If the government shutdown continues through the weekend, there will be no Catholic priest to celebrate Mass this Sunday in the chapels at some U.S. military installations where non-active-duty priests serve as government contractors,” he wrote.

The behavior of the Obama Administration in this “crisis” they entirely precipitated by refusing to negotiate has been positively sadistic. But that’s hardly surprising coming from the apotheosis of liberal radicalism, the veritable secular god of the left.

So, some Catholic soldiers are likely to have to do without Mass this weekend, all to help Obama improve his political position a bit.  I pray it backfires enormously on him.

The moral structure of pedophilia October 4, 2013

Dr. Anthony Esolen has written a damning, thought-provoking piece that establishes more or less unequivocally that opposition to pedophilia in the United States at present rests on basically non-existent foundations, with almost all adults accepting without question the modern dictum of “if it feels good, do it.”  Opposition to pedophilia – sure to be enormously challenged in the coming years – has no philosophical basis, but simply a basis of personal sentiment.  Most people, right now, feel pedophilia is wrong.  But why should that be, if we also murder babies at the rate of 3000+ a day?  There is no real reason, no undergirding belief system to support that opposition to pedophilia, so that when the PR campaign gets ginned up to “normalize” this hideous crime, opposition will melt away, just as it did with abortion, divorce, homosexual simulation of marrage, etc., etc:

The moral structure of pedophilia is simply this: the welfare of children is subordinate to the sexual gratification of adults……..

We should be thankful that the Sanduskys and Laheys are still considered monstrous. But in contemporary America that condemnation rests on sentiment and not on moral reasoning. No one can simultaneously explain why their actions were so vile and uphold the first commandment of the sexual revolution: fulfill thy desires……

…..No, it isn’t how Sandusky and Lahey did what they did, or under what circumstances, that explains the disgust. It’s what they did—but nobody wants to acknowledge that.

The reason for that reluctance becomes clear, if we keep in mind the moral structure of pedophilia. Sexual gratification trumps. Thank goodness that for now, there aren’t many men who are sexually attracted to youngsters. In that single case, we raise the banner for the children. But in no other case.

If we altered the question, and asked not how many people have done sexually abusive things with children, but how many people have done sexual things that redounded to the suffering of children, then we might confess that the only thing that separates millions of people from Jerry Sandusky is inclination. Everything that was once considered a sexual evil and that is now winked at or cheered, everything without exception, has served to hurt children, and badly.

We might point here to divorce. Unless it is necessary to remove oneself and one’s children from physical danger and moral corruption, the old wisdom regarding divorce should hold, if children themselves have anything to say about it. Parents will say, “My children can never be happy unless I am happy,” but they should not lay that narcissistic unction to their souls. Children need parents who love them, not parents who are happy; they are too young to be asked to lay down their lives for someone else. It is not the job of the child to suffer for the parent, but the job of the parent to endure, to make the best of a poor situation, to swallow his pride, to bend her knees, for the sake of the child.

We might point to births out of wedlock. The child has a right to enter more than a little nursery decorated with presents from a baby shower. He should enter a human world, a story, a people. He should be born of a mother and a father among uncles and aunts and cousins and grandparents, stretching into the distant past, with all their interrelated histories, with his very being reflected in all those mirrors of relation, not to mention his eyes and his hair, the talents in his fingers and the cleverness in his mind. This belonging to a big and dependable world can be secured only in the context of the permanent love of his mother and father, declared by a vow before the community and before the One in whom there is no shadow of alteration…….

…..There are pedophiles of the body, and pedophiles of the soul. Planned Predators happily enlist the latter among their troops…….

This is a great piece, and deserves to be widely read.  Perhaps readers have thought I’ve gone around the bend a bit in proclaiming that I fully expect forms of slavery to be accepted by polite (or elite) society before very long. Everything this culture believes points in that direction.  This culture already believes that some human beings have no rights and can be killed without a second thought, “legally,” in a “safe” abortuary.  This culture already holds that some human beings in hospital beds can be cut up and harvested of their organs, even while still breathing on their own, for the benefit of those not quite so ill.  Women have been taught over the past 50 years to turn themselves into purely sexual creatures, whose sole worth is in attracting the very brief, no-commitments made lust of a man.  Are not all these people, tens of millions of them, already existing under a form of slavery?

In reality, our culture has already embraced slavery, as it has thrown off the Christian ethos that led to its final eradication after many centuries of arduous effort.  Of course, real slavery still exists in muslim and pagan lands where Chrisitanity is unknown.  But how long before we hear voices in this post-Christian culture claiming that slavery is perfectly acceptable, and that it is even good, for some people just don’t have much self-will or direction in life, and need a strong hand to guide them?  There will be justifications aplenty, once the Christian belief in the dignity and self-determination of each sovereign soul is stripped away.

Pity the children. Given how fast has been the collapse in opposition to the destruction of marriage as something sacred, I don’t think we can imagine that “normalization” and de-criminalization of pedophilia is a bridge too far.

Lord, have mercy on us.  And your children.

Arch-heretic Kung planning suicide? October 4, 2013

I think it’s just the pathetic fact that this man cannot stand not to have his name in the media for more than 15 minutes.  But I have seen it reported in various locations that the arch-modernist-heretic Hans Kung is considering “euthanasia” as an alternative to offering up his sufferings and living out his natural life.  Apparently, he is afflicted with vision problems and Parkinson’s. He is presently 85.  Great coverage from Kreuz.net via Tancred at Eponymous Flower:

Originally from Switzerland, the shoe salesman’s son, assigned as an ostensibly Catholic theologian, had his permission to teach withdrawn, because of continuing to spread of heresy in 1980, by Pope John Paul II, whose canonization progresses in the Church.

In an interview with a Swiss radio station on the 20th of December 1979, Küng was completely surprised “of such an action,”  which puts him in the vicinity of “heretics” (said the interviewer).

Küng is considered to be the mouthpiece of the modernists who seek the protestantization of the Church.

At the same time, the examples of his person shows how far the “Catholic” university has removed from the theology of Catholicism and the (Catholic) Church.  [Indeed, Kung still teaches “Catholic theology” at a university in Tubingen, it’s just not a “Catholic” university.  But he still infects numerous young minds with “the synthesis of all heresies.”]

…..According to his own report, Küng is suffering from Parkinsons, and could barely write or even read any more due to an eye injury.

Although he was not suicidal, he was “lived long”.

Since now his imagined volume of his memoirs is thus also the last, he would be retiring from public life.

To enable the advertisement of this last work of the die hard theologian, Küng has addressed himself to suicide attackers (for his own behalf).

What is “a scholar who can not read and write,” asks Küng of himself.

The suicide pills of Swiss euthanasia institutions have particularly impressed him.

Well, the euthanasia of Hans Kung would be a tragic end to an equally tragic life.  But I seriously doubt he intends any such act.  Hans Kung has first and foremost always been most interested in the promotion of Hans Kung. Unless he thinks killing himself would provide him with some post-death blaze of glory, I don’t see him going this route.  What a troubled man.  I simply cannot comprehend the mindset of arch-heretics such as Kung, who are so given over to pride they set themselves against everything the Church believes and make Christ and His Church into impotent non-entities.  They so have to be right in their theological errors that they refuse to see how their errors have devastated souls and the entire Church. The man does not even believe in the Resurrection!  How can such a person even count themself as a Christian is beyond me, but such non-belief is just part and parcel of modernism.

For all the damage he has inflicted upon the Church (and his own soul), Hans Kung certainly needs many prayers, as painful as it might be to do such. Perhaps someone can offer up some prayers for his sincere conversion tonight at the Carmel?
