Here cometh the persecution…… February 28, 2014

…….and it’s riding the gay train, as I’ve long said.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer refused to sign a bill passed with substantial majorities in the Arizona legislature that would have extended religious freedom protections to businesses.  A law exists that covers individuals.  Since many small businesses, in particular, are merely extensions of the individual, this law would appear to make a good deal of sense.  But, caving to outside pressure, including threats to never allow another Super Bowl in Arizona, Brewer refused to sign the bill.  So, Christian cake bakers and wedding photographers can still be forced to provide services for actions they find repugnant – such as marrying two people of the same sex – under penalty of law, if they get a magistrate or bureaucrat who feels their refusal constitutes a “hate crime.”

We have traveled, as Jonah Goldberg notes, an immense distance in a historical blink of the eye.  Just a couple of decades ago, homosexual acts and the inclination itself were viewed as profoundly disordered and destructive, with homosexual acts largely illegal (if unenforced) and homosexuality rated as a mental disorder – as it had been considered for a very, very long time.

But now we have come to such a low point, those who adhere to the same Christian Dogma regarding homosexuality that practically everyone at least tacitly accepted just a few years ago, are now called Nazis and likened to Jim Crow racists by the cultural powers that be:

Speaking of unreasonableness, according to ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser, if Arizona allows bakers to refuse to bake cakes for gay couples, gays may have to wear “yellow stars” like the Jews of Nazi Germany. It would be Jim Crow for gays according to, well, too many people to list.

So merely passing a law that allows people to refuse service to those who desire their participation in acts they find morally repugnant – such as photographing a “wedding” of two men – is so completely beyond the pale those people are likened to some of the most monstrous evils in all history.

In essence, Christianity is being forcible ejected from the public square.  And since Christianity is a religion that demands public practice and witness, there will be an inevitable clash between secularists that demand we shut up (or, preferably, cease to exist) and Christians who refuse to be silenced.

It happened in Canada, and some Christians went to jail.  Most just meekly acquiesced.

This is the persecution.  Will we be stronger in the Faith than many Canadians?  Will we fight like the French?  The FRENCH!  Where are our million-person marches on the Capital opposing this state-enforced immorality?

I am out of time!

This post is not for kids or those with delicate consciences.  Kids, seriously, go away.  I’m not going to blog until you go.  NOW.

Okay…..

So, I’m still reading Goodbye, Good Men, Michael Rose’s expose on the late 20th century collapse of the American seminary due to leftist, modernist, and, above all, sodomite infiltration.  About halfway through the book, he makes another of his regular stunning revelations.  This one concerns Mt. Angel Seminary in Oregon, where about 20 years ago a certain professor – who also performed psychological examinations of the seminarians, evaluations which frequently derailed the hopes of many orthodox men – taught a required course on human sexuality.  This course was ludicrously obscene and seemed to reflect the perversions of the psychologist/professor (this is very common, those who have perversions or other grave conditions who obtain positions of influence over others almost invariably attempt to “normalize” their kinks by forcing those under their influence to accept their views).

The textbook was littered with porn.  But even worse, the professor foisted handouts to seminarians with asinine questions they were required to answer.  A sampling:

What is the content of your sexual fantasy life today?

How do you deal with your sexual feelings?  What are your experiences with self-pleasuring?

If you were to talk with your genitals, what would you like to say to them?  What would they like to say to you?

Wait.  What did he just ask?  Did he just tell people to talk to their genitals?

Is that even remotely normal?  Do people talk to their feet, or their hair?  How about their liver?  Is there something magical about genitalia that make them worthy discussion partners?

Is the professor insane?  Is he so completely, inordinately focused on sexuality as the be all and end all of existence (that is to say, he is a Jungian, which many psychologists are) that he imagines “genital discourse” as something even remotely normal?

I hope the seminarians all wrote in response “My genitalia said ‘Leave us alone, you’re a seminarian for Heaven’s sake!'”

With formation like this……….I don’t think I even need to say it.

I also read in Goodbye Good men that the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, back in the mid-90s, was using Richard McBrien’s completely discredited Catholicism in its basic theology course.  This is the book that was so bad, so heretical, that even the USCCB condemned it.  Now that’s saying something, because the USCCB has let some awful trash through.  Someone sold our name to the Missionary Oblates and we have been getting mailings from them for years, seeking donations.  They all go in the trash.

Join Pray for Bishops Now….uh, now! February 28, 2014

Someone has set up a website asking for Catholics to make daily prayers for their bishops, that they may have true faith, zeal, and courage in the performance of their absolutely vital apostolates.  You can read some details here, and the website has a blog with regular exhortations and encouragements to prayer, but I would think this should be a no-brainer. I also imagine many of my readers are already praying for their bishop and all bishops daily.

One benefit of participating in this effort is that the organizers have arranged to have a monthly Mass offered for the intentions and needs of those who participate.  The “requirements” for this effort are pretty minimal:

  • Pray a daily Morning Offering for the particular intention noted below, and
  • Pray one decade of the rosary (may be included in your daily rosary)

The morning offering is below:

  • O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer Thee all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day, for all the intentions of thy Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered throughout the world, in reparation for my many sins, faults, negligence’s and omissions, for all the intentions for which Thou art immolated upon all Catholic altars, for the good intentions of our Holy Father, and in particular that God’s most holy Will may be accomplished in and through all Catholic Bishops, for the glory of God, the good of the Church, and the sanctification of souls.

This is a totally voluntary effort. There is no list to join or anything like that.  You just pray.

We should always pray for our bishops, their souls are exposed to so many dangers as satan knows that if he can pick off a bishop, or lead one astray, he can severely mess up the faith of thousands or even millions.  Look at the situation in Germany now for all the evidence one needs of that.

I am one who feels the great crisis in our Faith which has afflicted the Church in the past several decades is a crisis primarily of leadership, and specifically episcopal leadership. But I also know that the mass dereliction of duty we see so frequently is a direct result of the collapse of the right practice of the Faith on the part of the great majority of Catholics.  So many Catholics are essentially dead in the Faith.  Those of us who have the enormous blessing not to be, need to make enormous efforts on behalf of ourselves and all those who have fallen away, to try to sway the direction of the spiritual combat in favor of piety.

And I note that this small effort is yet another good fruit of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.

The Seventy Seven (plus more!) Graces to be derived from Holy Mass February 27, 2014

I would like to highly recommend to you, dear reader, a book recommended to me by good friend and reader SL, called Explanation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by Fr. Martin von Cochem.  Fr. von Cochem was a  16th century German priest who realized that most people at his time did not have a proper understanding of the Mass, and so did not benefit from it as they should have. He saw this dearth of understanding as being a major source for why souls were falling into the rampant protestant apostasy propelling Germany into a hideous abyss.

We live in similar times today.  The vast majority of self-described Catholics have no knowledge of the Mass, its glory, its purpose, or its fruit.  Fr. von Cochem’s book goes a very long way towards remedying that situation, I again recommend it to you.

Fr. von Cochem lists 77 distinct graces or fruits to be derived from devout attendance at Holy Mass.  I will not list all of them, but some that were most remarkable to me.  I pray you find this edifying:

  • For thy salvation God the Father sends His beloved Son down from Heaven
  • For thy salvation the Holy Spirit changes bread and wine into the True Body and Blood of Christ
  • For thy sake the Son of God comes down from Heaven, and conceals Himself under the form of the Sacred Host
  • He even abases Himself to such an extent as to be present in the minutest particle of the Sacred Host
  • For thy salvation He renews the saving mystery of the Incarnation
  • For thee Christ offers Himself as a true burnt-offering, and renders to the Godhead the supreme honor which is its due
  • By offering this act of worship to God thou dost make reparation for the glory which thou hast failed to give Him
  • For thee Christ offers Himself to God as a Sacrifice of praise, thus atoning for thy omissions in praising His Holy Name.
  • By offering to God this oblation which Christ offers thou givest Him greater praise than do the holy angels
  • By offering to God Christ’s act of thanksgiving thou dost make ample acknowledgement of all the benefits He has bestowed on thee
  • For thee Christ offers Himself as the all-powerful Victim, reconciling thee to the God Whom thou has offended
  • He pardons thee all thy venial sins, provided thou art firmly resolved to forsake them
  • He offers Himself as a victim to make satisfaction for a part at least of thy debts and transgressions
  • Each time thou hearest Mass thou canst do more to pay the penalty due to thy sins than by the severest work of penance
  • For the sake of this propitiatory victim the petitions proffered during Mass will be granted far sooner than those that are proffered at other times
  • Never canst thou pray so well as whilst present at Mass
  • This is so because Christ unites His prayers to thine, and offers them to His Heavenly Father
  • He acquaints Him with thy needs and the dangers to which thou art exposed, and makes thy eternal salvation His particular concern
  • By offering this Holy Sacrifice thou dost present to the Blessed Trinity the most acceptable of all oblations, greater than all things in Heaven and earth
  • By this Sacrifice thou dost honor God as He alone is worthy to be honored
  • By this Sacrifice thou dost give infinite satisfaction to the Most Holy Trinity
  • When thou hearest Mass aright, thou dost pay the most perform an act of highest worship
  • When thou dost bow down before the Sacred Host and the Sacred Chalice, thou dost perform a supreme act of adoration
  • For each time that thou dost gaze reverently upon the sacred host thou wilt receive a recompense in Heaven
  • Each time thou dost smite thy breast with compunction some of thy sins are remitted to thee
  • If thou hearest Mass in a state of mortal sin, God offers thee the Grace of conversion [don’t receive!]
  • Thou needest not fear a long and terrible Purgatory if thou hast already to a great extent atoned for thy sins by frequently assisting at Holy Mass
  • One Mass devoutly heard will do more to mitigate the pains of Purgatory than any act of penance, however difficult the performance
  • One Mass in thy lifetime will be of greater service to thee than many said for thee after death
  • Thou wilt attain a higher place in Heaven, which will be thine for all eternity
  • And if it is not within thy power to have Mass said for thy departed friends thou canst by devout assistance at the Holy Sacrifice release them from the tormenting flames.

“If Christians only knew how to profit by Holy Mass, they might acquire greater riches than are to be found in all the things God has created. We have indeed a precious storehouse in the Mass.  Happy he who can earn treasures so great at the cost of so little labor! Who would willingly miss Mass? Who would not delight in hearing it? Let us resolve never to lose an opportunity of hearing  Mass, provided the duties of our state of life do not prevent us from doing so.

To omit hearing Mass daily merely from carelessness of indolence would be a proof that we were either ignorant of, or indifferent to, the divine treasures it contains. God grant that those who read this book may in future appreciate more fully this pearl of great price, value it more highly, seek it more diligently!”

I love Michael Voris and Christopher Ferrara and Michael Matt February 27, 2014

There seems to be some sad controversy developing between people who should be friends and allies. I decline to participate.

I love Michael Voris. I have met him personally and know of his commitment to aid souls in obtaining salvation and remedying the crisis in the Church.  I firmly believe his work is of great benefit and that he is completely sincere in all his efforts.

I have never met Chris Ferrara or Michael Matt, but I also appreciate their work very much.  I think Ferrara’s book exposing the foundations of the United States as highly problematic and delving deeply into the heresy of liberalism/Americanism is a huge contribution to the sensus fidelium.

I had never met an SSPX priest until this past Saturday.  He was a great gentleman, scholarly, and obviously well formed. I have strong feelings of thanks towards the SSPX, because without their endurance, even what some may call their obstinacy, I am convinced the great Traditional Mass would have disappeared forever.  At the same time, I wish and pray their canonical situation could be regularized. I think there are some problems with their current status but those problems pale in comparison to the problems with say, the Jesuits, most Dominicans, Franciscans, etc.

It is very easy for those of us who have only known the glory of the traditional Mass and traditional practice of the Faith for a short time to cast aspersions at those who have been struggling to adhere to that practice and see it grow and spread through long decades of vicious persecution. It is easy to claim how misguided some souls are, how wicked their errors, from a very comfortable position where no suffering is required and you have all you could ever want.  That’s my position, and I’m incredibly blessed.  I daily get contact from readers not so fortunate, who struggle with agonizing decisions as to whether risk “disobedience” or to continue to expose their children and themselves to nightmarish abuse and error, to see their children literally falling away because of what they are exposed to.  It is easy to forget that some people have now been in this fight for 40 or even 50 years, when some of us have only come into it in the past 4 or 5.  50 years of combat can take a toll on a person.

I don’t have any great answers for this situation. I’m sure all involved are motivated by true compassion and zeal for souls.  As for me, I have no criticism to make of any personalities involved. I feel no need to assault the SSPX.  I haven’t seen anything from Michael Voris or Michael Matt or Christopher Ferrara that makes me say – these guys are a danger.  These guys are really leading people astray.  I just haven’t seen it, and I follow them all pretty closely. What I see instead is almost universally works of great value, prudence, and basic goodness.

Commence fire if you like, I shall keep my powder dry, and safely locked up.

Against my better judgment, I’m going to open comments.

Suggestions for Lenten mortifications, from me and a great priest February 27, 2014

Some commenters asked last week for suggestions for Lenten mortifications.  I had been waiting for this past Sunday’s sermon to go up on Audio Sancto to tie in with that, and low and behold, after I had already finished this post I went by Audio Sancto and it has been uploaded!  Thank you, Lord!

This sermon provides wonderful guidance for how to practice mortification during Lent.  Please listen:

I do want to echo what the priest says – Lent is not about undergoing some suffering just to punish ourselves, even in union with Christ’s suffering on the Cross.  Lenten mortification must have a much higher purpose, that being our personal conversion into a life of sanctity.  Thus, these Lenten sacrifices must be engaged in not with a downtrodden spirit, or with many complaints over what you’re suffering.  In fact, if you do that, you will get little if any Grace from your mortifications.  No, these mortifications must be undertaken with a willing, happy spirit, with an open heart that looks forward in hope to the great work of conversion the Graces earned during Lent will make in our souls. This is our yearly opportunity to practice some serious sanctity, maybe even heroic sanctity!  The priest says it so much better than I, but here are some ideas for now (and remember, it is highly advisable to start on many of your mortifications before Lent even formally starts, so you don’t get caught “cold”):

  • Avoid foods you really like.  Take more of foods you don’t like, and less of ones you do
  • Season your foods in ways you really don’t like. If you like salt, have it bland. If you hate salt, salt it up.
  • Avoid meat at one meal a day.  Men, have a salad at one meal (or not, if you love salad).
  • Give up flesh meat entirely for Lent. The devout Orthodox still give up not only ALL meat, including fish, but also ALL animal products, including butter, eggs, cheese, etc. Only do so if you are physically able.
  • Even more hardcore, go with the traditional Lenten fast – on all days save Sunday and Feast days, only eat one full meal with two small snacks. You could add abstinence to this, as well, skipping meat except at the main meal
  • Take your shower hotter or colder than you like
  • If you drive a lot, practice patience by staying in the slow lane and keeping a good distance between you and the car in front of you.  Don’t speed.  Every time you have to slow down, remember that you are growing in patience.
  • For that matter, practice patience by getting in the long line at the store/supermarket. Let people get in front of you
  • Abstain from all TV during Lent
  • Abstain from radio.  Instead of listening to the radio while driving, pray.
  • Abstain from the internet (I get the blogger’s exception on this one-heh)
  • If you have some favorite hobbies or activities, consider giving one or more of them up for the duration of Lent
  • Don’t go out to eat during Lent. Donate the money saved to local pro-life efforts
  • Along with avoiding favorite foods, don’t eat dessert for the duration of Lent.  Or avoid all snacks.  Only eat fruit, instead of sweets.  No processed sugar (can you tell I need to lose weight?).
  • Practice willful spiritual poverty. Deny yourself things.  No impulse buying. Only purchase what is truly necessary.  Again, donate the money saved (almsgiving is another necessary Lenten practice).
  • If you find your job a chore, consider working more. If you love work, try to spend more time away from work (within reason, of course).  Do more chores around the house.
  • Do what your spouse/kids/friends/siblings want, instead of having things your way.  Within prudence.
  • If you have any strong/bad habits, strive to eliminate them entirely or reduce them to a point of true moderation.  This could apply to coffee, nicotine, alcohol (if you love your evening wine, skip it), all kinds of things.

Hopefully, that will get you started.  You obviously don’t have to do all the above, but choose some, or think of your own.  Think of what you really like to do, and even if it is something relatively good, consider giving it up for Lent.

In addition to denial, there are positive acts that can and should be taken as part of spiritual mortification:

  • Commit to reading a selection of spiritual books during Lent
  • Assist at Mass everyday, or every day you possibly can
  • Commit to weekly/regular Confession and arrange to receive spiritual direction if it’s been a while
  • Pray the Stations daily, not just Friday
  • Take up some special Lenten Novenas
  • Commit to praying the Divine Office, or parts of it
  • Practice spiritual and corporal almsgiving. Set aside time to pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory.  Give more money to charity/Church.
  • Perform daily Adoration, or more adoration.  Note: the Blessed Sacrament need not be exposed for Adoration. You can adore Our Lord just as well in the tabernacle
  • Pray and/or counsel outside abortion mills in your area
  • Exercise more.  If you are accustomed to watching TV or other sedentary activities, commit to mortifying yourself by performing more physical activities.  Get in shape for Jesus.  Our Body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, treat it as such.
  • Say an extra daily Rosary. Or commit to saying all three (or four, if you are mod) sets of Mysteries daily.
  • Practice devotion to the Sacred Heart, or Immaculate Heart of Mary, or……..
  • Pray, pray, pray. Develop a plan of prayer before Lent begins, and stick to it.

There are two critical considerations.  First, have a plan before Lent starts next week on Ash Wednesday.  Be ready to fast or perform whatever mortification you choose well before Ash Wednesday.  As I said at the top, it really helps to take advantage of Septuagesima to start these mortifications in a voluntary way, or at least think them through.  Secondly, if you fall down, don’t worry about it, get back up. If you come across this post 2 weeks into Lent and haven’t started anything, start then.  Another advantage of trying to start your mortifications during Septuagesima, when it is more voluntary, is that if you pick something that just won’t work, you have time to try another mortification.  But if this happens during Lent, pray about it, and change if you absolutely must.  You don’t want to get into a merry-go-round where you keep hopping on and off mortifications.  That would really defeat the purpose.

A final key consideration, to reiterate what I said above, it not to make Lent an unpleasant experience. Yes, we are denying ourselves things, or adding more, but with a purpose, to be more Christ-like and to receive Grace in order to greatly advance our conversion!  Lent can be a time of great spiritual growth, if we take advantage of it, and that should fill our hearts with joy!  As Christ said, when we pray, do it privately, and when we fast, don’t look all miserable and downtrodden, but be happy, look nice, and offer it up!

I have a lot of very good, pious souls as readers.  I welcome your suggestions, as well.

Oh noes! Mother Jones climate change rape nightmare! February 27, 2014

This will be a very short post.  Via Ace, only committed leftists could reach this conclusion, in a real, honest to goodness Mother Jones headline:

Global Warming Will Cause 180,o00 More Rapes by 2099!

Now, I have to wonder…….when they did their math, did they subtract off from the future rapes all the tens of millions of baby girls who will be aborted in the interim, especially given that the countries they are so concerned being afflicted with a climate-induced growth in rape are the same countries where sex-selective abortions are very prevalent.  Are they sure the two phenomenon won’t cancel each other out?

I think this is a really important study – it shows what kind of idiocy uneducated leftists will accept as ostensible “science.”  In short, they’ll believe anything – provided it reinforces their pre-existing world view.

Then again, the right is not immune, what with FEMA trailers and the Feds buying all the ammo, etc.

It should be clear by now that “blogal worming” is simply the Left’s version of the boogeyman, the catch-all evil that basically plays the role of the devil in their sexular pagan religion.

I think this thought could actually be seriously developed. I may work on this some……but not now.

Federal judge throws out Texas marriage amendment February 26, 2014

Thanks to commenter skeinster for bringing this to my attention.  Will we see a full-court press from the bishops to back marriage and the sanctity of the family in this state?

Yes, don’t hold your breath.

A federal district court judge – mimicking rulings in three other states – has thrown out the state constitutional amendment, approved by over 3/4 of the population, defining marriage according to God’s intent and Biblical edict.  As I said last summer, it would not be three years until this hideous abomination will be the law of the land. I was wildly overoptimistic, it won’t be 2 years:

A federal judge in San Antonio has overturned a 2005 amendment banning gay marriage. U.S. Judge Orlando Garcia joins a growing number of federal judges in states like Utah, Ohio, Oklahoma, Kentucky and, more recently, Virginia, who have declared bans on gay marriage are in violation of the United States Constitution. Currently, gay marriage is legal in 17 states.

In his official order, Garcia writes, “Today’s court decision is not made in defiance of the great people of Texas or the Texas Legislature, but in compliance with the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court precedent.” You can read the ruling here.

The ruling was made after a lawsuit filed in October 2013 by Mark Phariss and Vic Holmes who, alongside another same sex couple, sued the state of Texas for the right to marry. Phariss and Holmes, who make their home in West Plano near Dallas……

The judge at least had the decency to stay his decision until the 5th circuit hears Texas’ appeal, but given that the Supreme Court said, in a formal ruling, that the only reason to oppose two sodomites pretending to be married is due to prejudice, it’s unlikely the appeals court will decide any differently.

A mighty retribution is coming, and it will not be pretty.  Pray you and I remain faithful! Pray we don’t try to flee the coming wrath!  As I have said elsewhere today – and how providential were those posts! – these folks will stop at nothing to crush any and all opposition, especially that which is religiously based.

As for this country, it’s done.  It is culturally and morally exhausted.

I thank again “Catholic” Anthony Kennedy for making this moment possible, just as he kept abortion legal, just as he overturned anti-sodomy laws……he’s been a Catholic for the ages, hasn’t he?!?  Yet, he remains a “Catholic in good standing” blaspheming the Holy Spirit and committing the gravest of sacrilege week in and week out when he presents for Communion.  And yet bishops and cardinals continue to hand it out to him, including Cardinal Burke.

I ask again, if Kennedy is not excommunicate, why does the Church even retain laws pertaining to excommunication on the books?

Oh, yes……I remember. For those crazy right wingers who get out of line from time to time.

Silly me.

Electra, TX in blue February 26, 2014

Electra, Texas was named after the fabulously wealthy daughter of Dan Waggoner, who started the fabled Waggoner Ranch in West Texas.  Under his son, Tom, the ranch grew to rival the King Ranch in South Texas, exceeding 500,000 acres.  Today, it’s down to around 370,000 acres, I believe, and is either in danger of, or in the process of, being sold off by squabbling heirs.  The last heir to really have control of the entire ranch was Electra Waggoner Biggs, a famous beauty and sculptor after whom the Buick Electra was named, and the Lockheed Electra, as well. She died in 2001.

Most local readers who have driven to Colorado have driven through Electra as they pass west of Wichita Falls on US 287.  A year ago, a couple heading from Taos, NM back to the DFW area decided to pull over and switch drivers.  A perfectly normal thing to do.  Up to that point on their trip, the wife had been driving the entire way (which I will not comment on), and now the husband was going to take over for the home stretch.  For some reason, Electra, TX cops decided they needed to ascertain what was going on, and then proceeded to demand ID and in general harass the man – who had not ever driven in the State of Texas on this particular day.  It is questionable whether police can demand ID – in the form of name, address, etc – from someone who is not being arrested. It is incontestable they cannot demand picture ID.

I’m sure some folks will say the guy had it coming to him, and he certainly goes to great lengths to make a point, but I also believe we are witnessing the steady erosion (to the extent they even exist) of our rights in this supposed liberal society, rights which supposedly offset the immorality and general chaos we see all around us.  That’s the tradeoff, right?  Liberal society undermines religion and tradition, and in general leads to moral decay, but the up side is we all get to be free, free, free, to do our own thing, and especially from this kind of authoritarian interference in our lives.

Uh huh.

If you feel the video is too long, you might want to just watch the last 5 minutes. It is extremely revealing, and I bet the city attorney is very uncomfortable, now, if not fired.  He basically called the cops out there inbred rednecks who are as great a threat to the innocent as to anyone else.  He also said rural justice is a joke, with those charged with crimes virtually inevitably convicted.  And the illegal body cavity searches continue……

What do we do about this, DDLG?
