And yet the interreligious crazy train rolls on along.  Because……..oh, I don’t even want to bother right now.

I know there have been many reports of the depredations of the lunatic islamists currently ruling large parts of the Fertile Crescent.  But here are two you might have missed.  First, the muslims seized the  1700 year old Mar Mattai monastery outside Mosul on Sunday (naturally!) this week:nineveh-mar-mattai-monastery

Jihadist militants have taken over a monastery in northern Iraq, one of the country’s best-known Christian landmarks, and expelled its resident monks, a cleric and residents said Monday.

Islamic State (IS) fighters stormed Mar (Saint) Behnam, a 4th century monastery run by the Syriac Catholic church near the predominantly Christian town of Qaraqosh, on Sunday, the sources said.

“You have no place here anymore, you have to leave immediately,” a member of the Syriac clergy quoted the Sunni militants as telling the monastery’s residents.

He said the monks pleaded to be allowed to save some of the monastery’s relics but the fighters refused and ordered them to leave on foot with nothing but their clothes.

Christian residents from the area told AFP the monks walked several miles along a deserted road and were eventually picked up by Kurdish peshmerga fighters who drove them to Qaraqosh.

The Syriac cleric said five monks were expelled from Mar Behnam. Christian families in the area said there may have been up to nine people living at the monastery.

The incident was the latest move by the Islamic State, which last month declared a “caliphate” straddling large swathes of northern Iraq and Syria, to threaten a Christian presence in the region spanning close to two millennia.

That is to say, there were Christians there centuries before mohammad mounted his first goat.  Or nine year old, for that matter.

In other news, the raging islamists, driven by Lord knows what kind of massive inferiority complex, blew up Jonah’s tomb this week, after previously ransacking it.  And I thought muslims held the Old Testament prophets in esteem?  Or is it just blood they worship?

This tomb contained not just the remains of Jonah the great prophet of Nineveh, but also many other priceless works of antiquity.  But that does not please crazed Salafist Islam which has been exported around the world by Saudi oil money (and the Saudis and Gulf states basically funded ISIS into 0,,17795562_303,00being, as well as most of the Syrian “opposition” movements, because this is part of a larger struggle between Persia/Shia and Saudi/Shiite islam).  One almost wonders if it’s not time use their oil fields as an open air repository for our nuclear waste.

Just a quick compare and contrast – which great Prophet remained completely chaste and constantly counseled same?  Which one counseled peace, benignity, and even suffering enormous insults and barbs without recourse to violence?  Ok, now which one not only engaged throughout his adult life in unchaste, promiscuous acts, to the point of taking very young girls as “wives,” treated women like cattle, and counseled same?  Which one founded a religion unique among all the non-primitive religions in directing the use of the most extreme violence against all non-believers?  Which religion has been spread virtually entirely by that violence?  Which one is opposed to reason and not only encourages, but seems to demand ignorance and backwardness?

I also have to ask why if these fighters are so brave and their cause so holy, why do they hide their face?

A little more.  In 2003, there were 35,000 Catholics in Mosul.  Now there are none.  An unintended consequence, to be sure, but one that was foreseeable all the same.  That dang war in Iraq unleashed chaos and extremism – just as Pope Saint John Paul II warned – that may never end.  And ancient Christian communities are being destroyed as a result.

The muslim goal is that there be no Christians at all in their “sacred” ummah.  This nation has done much to help bring that about:

The American Catholic Charities guy isn’t very impressive, but I was edified to see all those Chaldean Catholic women in veils.  Such a shame to know that all of that, in northern Iraq, at least, is gone.

I know there are relatively benign and even some good aspects to islam.  I know there are millions of relatively good muslims.  I guess. But I’m having an increasingly hard time not seeing it as a profoundly erroneous religion that seems predisposed to great evil.

And yet so many leaders in the Church slather completely unjustified attention and accolades on islam.  They are almost sycophants at time – good little dhimmis.

Two good sermons on the martial arts July 25, 2014

I am just about out of time for the day, but hope you will enjoy the sermons below, both related to the martial arts, or Christianity’s more militant side.  The first is a good history of the Battle of Vienna of 1683, that awesome battle in which King Jan Sobieski and his winged hussars stopped islam’s final attempt (until now) to advance into the heart of Europe.  This priest is nothing if not a great story teller (but also very much more)!

The second is not historical, but examines aspects of serving in the military today.  Father starts off with a description of the life the martyr Blessed Franz Jagerstatter, who refused to fight for the immoral Nazi regime.  Sadly, our own country has veered so far into immorality, and the military in particular has been used as a vehicle to advance that immorality, that the proud tradition of military service in the United States is now more morally questionable than ever.  “Wars are punishments for the sins of the worlds.” Father considers just and unjust wars, and the distinction between fighting in them.  Many of the wars the US has fought over the past few decades, with our very troubling defense policy, are highly suspect (if not outright damnable) from a just war standpoint.  Thus, volunteering to serve in the US military is increasingly problematic.

This video may be controversial, I don’t know, but I think the points raised deserve the most serious examination:

You might bear in mind this priest is most well-suited by personal experience to speak on this topic.  I shall leave it at that.

Leo XIII’s prayer of Exorcism against satan and the rebellious angels July 25, 2014

Via the estimable Fr. Peter Carota. Pope Leo XIII (can a lay person start a cause of canonization?!?, because I sure think he needs one!), in response to a waking vision he had of the Church suffering mightily under the oppression of satan and internal dissent and strife, instituted not only the well-known prayer to St. Michael the Arcangel (which the good pope caused to be recited after every Mass), but also the following short form of exorcism against satan and his rebellious angels.  Fr. Peter Carota prays this every day.  In these times when the Church, and so many souls, are under such awful attack from satan and all his minions – human and demonic – perhaps we should consider offering this prayer from time to time, especially when we feel especially tempted or under duress of any form:

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

+ In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Most glorious Prince of the Celestial Host, Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the conflict which we have to sustain against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places (Eph. 6.12). Come to the rescue of men whom God has created to His image and likeness, and whom He has redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. It is thou whom Holy Church venerates as her guardian and protector; thou whom the Lord has charged to conduct redeemed souls into Heaven. Pray, therefore, the God of Peace to subdue Satan beneath our feet, that he may no longer retain men captive nor do injury to the Church. Present our prayers to the most High, that without delay they may draw His mercy down upon us. Seize the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, bind him and cast him into the bottomless pit, that he may no more seduce the nations (Apoc. 20.2-3).

EXORCISM

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, [and powerful in the holy authority of our ministry]*, we confidently undertake to repulse the attacks and deceits of the devil.

*Lay people omit this text

Psalm 67

Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and let them that hate Him flee from before His face.Cyprian-imposing-Justina_14-century-manuscript

As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish away: as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

V. Behold the Cross of the Lord! Flee, bands of enemies.
R. The Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Offspring of David has conquered.
V. May Thy mercy descend upon us.
R. As great as our hope in Thee.

(The crosses (+) below indicate a blessing to be given if a priest recites the Exorcism; if a lay person recites it, they indicate the Sign of the Cross to be made by that person.)

We drive you from us, whoever you may be, unclean spirits, Satanic powers, infernal invaders, wicked legions, assemblies, and sects. In the name and by the virtue of Our Lord Jesus Christ +. May you be snatched away and driven from the Church of God and from the souls redeemed by the Precious Blood of the Divine Lamb +.

Cease by your audacity, cunning serpent, to deceive the human race, to persecute the Church, to torment God’s elect, and to sift them as wheat +. This is the command made to you by the Most High God +, with Whom in your haughty insolence you still pretend to be equal +. The God Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth (I Tim. 2.4). God the Father commands you +. God the Son commands you +. God the Holy Ghost commands you +. Christ, the Eternal Word of God made Flesh, commands you +. He Who to save our race, outdone through your malice, humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death (Phil. 2.8). He Who has built His Church on the firm rock and declared that the gates of hell shall not prevail against Her, because He dwells with Her all days, even to the consummation of the world (Matt. 28.20). The hidden virtue of the Cross requires it of you, as does the power of the mysteries of the Christian Faith +. The glorious Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, commands you +. She who by Her humility and from the first moment of Her Immaculate Conception crushed your proud head. The faith of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul and of the other Apostles commands you +. The blood of the Martyrs and the pious intercession of all the Saints command you +.

Thus, cursed dragon, and you, wicked legions, we adjure you by the living God +, by the true God +, by the holy God +, by the God Who so loved the world, as to give up His only-begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him may not perish but may have life everlasting (St. John 3.16). Cease deceiving human creatures and pouring out to them the poison of eternal perdition. Cease harming the Church and hindering her liberty. Retreat, Satan, inventor and master of all deceit, enemy of man’s salvation. Cede the place to Christ in Whom you have found none of your works. Cede the place to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church acquired by Christ at the price of His Blood. Stoop beneath the all-powerful Hand of God. Tremble and flee at the evocation of the Holy and terrible name of Jesus; this Name which causes hell to tremble; this Name to which the Virtues, Powers and Dominations of Heaven are humbly submissive; this Name which the Cherubim and Seraphim praise unceasingly, repeating: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord, the God of Hosts.

V. O Lord hear my prayer.H092_Devil-2
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. May the Lord be with thee.
R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

God of Heaven, God of earth, God of Angels, God of Archangels, God of Patriarchs, God of Prophets, God of Apostles, God of Martyrs, God of Confessors, God of Virgins, God who has power to give life after death and rest after work, because there is no other God than Thee and there can be no other, for Thou art the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, of Whose reign there shall be no end. We humbly prostrate ourselves before Thy glorious Majesty and we supplicate Thee to deliver us from all the tyranny of the infernal spirits, from their snares, their lies, and their furious wickedness. Deign, O Lord, to protect us by Thy power and to preserve us safe and sound. We beseech Thee through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

V.  From the snares of the devil,Peter_martyrdom of_GIOTTO di Bondone.jpg
R.  Deliver us, O Lord.

V.  That Thy Church may serve Thee in peace and liberty,
R.  We beseech Thee to hear us.

V.  That Thou would crush down all enemies of Thy Church,
R.  We beseech Thee to hear us.

(Holy water is sprinkled in the place where we may be.)

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Nice Video on Clear Creek Abbey July 25, 2014

I can’t believe we still haven’t made it up there to Clear Creek Abbey.  I have been wanting to go for years, but events have managed to intervene to prevent it.

Sort of a promotional video below, but it’s nice.  It gives a nice, if very brief, overview of their horarium and apostolate.

Nice upload by Video Sancto:

It is very true how much of our own efforts out in the world, and even our own sanctity, is due to the prayer of monastics.  Thus, the Church has been so gravely wounded by the collapse in religious life over the past several decades.  When the Church has experienced decadence and decay in the past, it has been from holy monasteries and convents that reform, even restoration, has come.  The monks of Cluny played a huge role in re-evangelizing the Church after a long period of decadence in the 900s and 1000s. That set the stage for a period of glorious piety in the 1100s and 1200s.

May God be so beneficent as to grant us such a restoration again!  And may we have so many more holy, pious religious!

“Solution” to immigration “crisis:” Obama directs agencies to go to Central America, bring immigrants here July 25, 2014

This to me is essentially the smoking gun that the Obama Administration has been behind this false crisis all along.  Once again, before anyone hyperventilates, I say this crisis is false because the sudden mass waves of immigration are not a natural phenomenon, but are being created by some artificial pressure – either the promise of amnesty, a covert PR campaign, what have you.

Obama, I think, planned to tilt the electorate decisively in his party’s favor by encouraging (or forcing, if you will), mass waves of immigration.  Or at least, helping to promote a long term electoral advantage.  He also loves a crisis, especially ones he creates.  That frees him to take dramatic, often unconstitutional steps to act in response to the “crisis.”

But the current situation hasn’t been entirely favorable to Obama, as there has been a great deal of negative PR associated with the dangers many immigrants, especially the minors, encounter in trying to get through Mexico to the United States.  There have been lurid stories of mass sex abuse, people murdered, children dying in the desert, etc.  Faced with a bit of a problem, how to deal with this negative PR while still pursuing his goal, Obama has arrived at a solution: why not just send federal agents to these countries, declare the emigre’s “refugees,” and bring them here on nice, safe, taxpayer-funded US transport!  Why, it’s a socialist’s dream come true:

A foolproof plan to ease pressure on the border that’s currently being considered by the White House. Why force kids to make a dangerous trip through Mexico only to end up as illegal immigrants in the United States when we could go to them, grant them legal status, and send them north to America ourselves? It’s so crazy it just. might. work.

Minor footnote: Federal law doesn’t allow refugee status to be granted for fear of street gangs, only for fear of racial/religious/political persecution, but oh well. Legal details never stopped Obama before…..

……..The next step, logically, should be to expand this policy to places like Iraq and Syria where there really are lots of refugees as that term is traditionally understood, but since Iraqis and Syrians lack the sort of massive political constituency in the U.S. that Latino voters represent for Central Americans, I assume they’ll be SOL. Or do I assume too much? The Honduras proposal is really the logical endgame of hard-left support for amnesty: If you want to start absorbing foreign populations, it’s silly and even mean to force them to make difficult journeys north and then play hide and seek with the Border Patrol to earn their prize. Why not go to where they are and start handing out visas and bus tickets? If Obama tries this idea, the pressure on him to expand the number of visas granted annually from 1,750 to many times that number will be instant and intense, precisely because this is a game of mass population absorption, not token gestures to a handful of the local citizens. In fact, this may even be the beginning of a new Orwellian transformation in the terminology used for this subject. First it was “aliens,” then it became “illegal immigrants,” then it became “undocumented immigrants” (or “undocumented Americans” for true Newspeak devotees), and maybe now we’ll see a concerted movement to dub all illegals “refugees,” even if they don’t qualify by law. It’s a short progressive leap from handing out asylum to people fleeing general street violence to fleeing “economic violence” or whatever. Why not them too? Why not everyone?

Indeed, and that has been the double standard (and a rather self-serving one at that) I have noted in the USCCB’s position regarding mass illegal Hispanic immigration.  Why isn’t the USCCB advocating to bring all the truly abused, truly suffering Catholic refugees to the US from Iraq and Syria?  Why are they only focused on Hispanic immigration?  And what of all the non-Catholics around the world suffering under far worse conditions than those prevalent in Central America right now?  Should they not, by the same logic, be receiving the bishop’s unlimited, unquestioning support?

There are two factors at play: Hispanic immigration meets the bishop’s needs for both many new Catholics to replace the hundreds of thousands who fall away from the Church every year (including many recent immigrants themselves), and it also suits the political predispositions of most bishops.  “The democrat party at prayer,” and all that.  This is a win-win as far as they’re concerned, but Arab Catholics from the Mideast, or African animists for that matter, not as much.  While all immigrants tend to vote democrat for at least the first generation or two, Hispanics are by far the most reliable in doing so.  Those from other parts of the world tend to split a little more evenly.  So why take a risk?

At least, that’s the only reason I can think of for the inconsistency in the USCCB’s position.  Or maybe they just haven’t thought that hard about it.
