An interesting post via Pertinacious Papist, a Dutch physician, once a leader of the pro-euthanasia forces in his country, now has some rather strong regrets.  It turns out many people in the Netherlands who are merely sick, unhappy, or lonely are now desiring death, and obtaining it.  The slope turned out to be very slippery after all:

A Dutch expert on euthanasia has not only stopped supporting the death practice and the euthanasia law for which he campaigned, but he has made the reasons for his about-face public — something usually frowned upon in Dutch circles. [Could it be the “tolerant” Dutch are really only tolerant so long as one toes the dominant left wing line?]

Professor Theo Boer held a unique position for seeing how the country’s euthanasia/assissted suicide law, enacted in 2002, actually worked. For nine years, Boer, a medical ethicist was a mamber of one of the five Dutch regional review committees charged with investigating all reported euthanasia and assisted-suicide deaths for the government to see if each case complied with the law.

In an article Boer submitted to London’s Daily Mail — in the hope of persuading Britain’s House of Lords not to pass an assisted-suicide law — Boer said he and his colleagues were “terribly wrong” when they concluded five years after the Dutch euthanasia law took effect that there was no “slippery slope” associated with that law. Starting in 2008, the numbers of induced deaths began increasing 15% each year. By 2012, the euthanasia review committees recorded 4,188 deaths (compared to 1,882 in 2002), and Boer expects the reported annual death count to reach 6,000 this year or next year at the latest.

“Euthanasia is on the way to become a ‘default’ mode of dying for cancer patients,” he wrote, and there’s been a sharp increase in the deaths of people with psychiatric illnesses or dementia, and those simply suffering from grief, loneliness, or age. “Some of these patients could have lived for years or decades,” he explained.

Expiatory suffering has always been one of the more difficult sells to make to people lost in the ways of the world, the flesh, and the devil, but I think this willingness to throw life away whenever severe illness occurs, or even because one is sad or lonely, just indicates how utterly banal, unfulfilling, and boring a worldly existence really is. Probably most of these Dutch people are convinced atheists and believe they will just experience oblivion forever once they die. You’d think they’d cling to life a bit more, then, but poor secular man, he traded Grace and the Sacraments for TV and fast food, and he’s finding the exchange wanting.  But he is still too blind to realize the source of his pain.

This is a sure sign of a civilization in collapse.  When people can not only not be bothered to reproduce, but even to live!  Oh, the suffocating ennui!  Think of the massive good that suffering united to that of Christ’s could be achieving!  Such a waste.

Final note: Holland was an early adopter of some of the most radical tenets of protestantism.  That quickly gave way to rationalism, deism, agnosticism, indifference, and cultural atheism.  It is little surprise countries like Holland and Czech, where the secularist rot has been so deep, are leading the way to self-annihilation.

Leftism = death.

Leftism (again) confirms its religious nature – “Our Chavez…in heaven” September 8, 2014

I know I’ve been beating this drum pretty hard of late, but there are always new readers coming by and people getting pulled in by random posts.  I saw this last week but did not get a chance to get to it until today.

Some Chavistas in Sud Amerika have once again revealed the dogmatic, fervently religious nature of the political/economic left.  This is so clumsy and stupid it would be funny, if it weren’t so blasphemous.  The following prayer was composed by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and offered publicly among the fervent, red clad communists of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela.  See what you make of this:

The reigning  president since 2011, Nicolas Maduro of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) bases his power on the state-sponsored cult of personality around his predecessor ,Chavez. The presidential elections in April 2013 Maduro had won with a wafer thin 50.66 percent of the vote  for himself.

During an internal training session for party functionaries of the ruling PSUV, the Chavisten were encouraged by Maduro, to continue to pray a socialist version of the Our Father. It was written in honor of the deceased  late President Hugo Chavez as reported by  the Venezuelan television channel Globovision  on Monday.

In the new “Bolivarian prayer of the Chavista delegates” it says:

“Our Chavez will in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in us, the delegates, hallowed be thy name.Your heritage come to bring it to the people here and everywhere, give us your light today, so you lead us every day and lead us not into the temptation of capitalism, but deliver us from the evil of the oligarchy and the crime of smuggling, for we are the country, the peace and the life, eternity, Amen. Viva Chavez!”

Isn’t it funny how socialism cannot seem to work without a wickedly focused cult of personality?  Pol Pot in Cambodia, the Kim Il Sung family in North Korea, Honecker in East Germany, Lenin and Stalin in the former Soviet Union, Mao in China – without a charismatic and very forceful leader, without an absolute demagogue and demi-god – socialism, especially in its harder forms, cannot exist.

So these socialists are actually the exact opposite of what they claim to be.  Far from empowering vast swaths of people, they concentrate power in a narrower and narrower elite.  Far from spreading wealth, they steal wealth and spread misery.  And far from being atheistic/areligious, the left has frequent recourse to religious imagery and dogmatic fervor in the furtherance of its agenda.  The above is just one small example.

But the main point again is how leftism in all its many forms constantly presents itself (sometimes quite openly) as an inextricably hostile and competing religion to the One True Faith.  The French Revolutionaries who started much of this mess were very open about that – they penned open fantasies about killing God and storming Heaven.  So none of this is new. What is new, and a development of only the last century or so, is the widespread chucking of Christianity for leftism by many within the sects, other churches, and the Church itself.  There had been 150 years of very strong conflict between the Church and leftism prior to the early 20th century, when many in the Church (and other groups) suddenly decided it was too hard to fight and surrendered.  And that group – called modernists, 100 years ago – even though fought by the hierarchy and driven underground at points, eventually metastasized within the Church until powerful enough to stage a mighty coup.  They have been in power for the past 50 years.

And with the recent rehabilitation of so-called liberation theology, don’t be surprised to see new, blasphemous “Our Fathers” proliferate in a parish near you.

The pettiness of it all – Sheen Cause stopped by inexplicable NY behavior September 8, 2014

I was talking with a reader about this yesterday, and we both surmised there is some incredibly small, petty jealousy (or similar) at the root of this shockingly obtuse behavior on the part of the Archdiocese of New York.

For those who do not know, the Diocese of Peoria, Ill has been leading the cause for Servant of God Fulton Sheen’s canonization for the past 12 years precisely because the Archdiocese of New York – wherein Sheen served most of his priestly life – refused to do so.  Since Sheen was originally ordained in Peoria, it made sense for that Diocese to go to the expense and effort to pursue his cause.  But that cause has now stopped, it is dead in the water (and after a miracle was confirmed which seemed to open the way to beatification!), due to the inexplicable and seemingly insufferable intransigence of the Archdiocese of New York, which has stated it will not assist the Cause in any way, especially regarding the translation of Sheen’s remains.

This is simply amazing effrontery:

After an outpouring of great support for the actions taken by Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C., Bishop of the Diocese of Peoria regarding the suspension of the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Cause of Sainthood, the Diocese is providing additional clarifications.

According to the Chancellor of the Diocese of Peoria, Patricia Gibson, who has worked with the Cause from the beginning, “Bishop Jenky only agreed to pursue the cause for canonization of Fulton Sheen after he was assured by the Archdiocese of New York that they had no interest in pursuing the cause but would support Peoria’s efforts. [Even this refusal to pursue the cause is more than passing strange.  Generally, dioceses are eager to claim Saints as their own!  It is a great source of spiritual and material benefit to a diocese to do so.  The attitude of the Archdiocese of NY on this matter, across more than one ordinary, has been bizarre almost to the point of scandal]  Specifically, Bishop Jenky was told by Cardinal Egan in September 2002 that New York was not interested in pursuing the cause. He also indicated that at the appropriate time he would facilitate the transfer of the body to Peoria. In December 2004, Cardinal Egan again confirmed at a meeting in New York with Bishop Jenky that he continued to support the efforts of the Cause and reassured him that he would work to transfer the body at the appropriate time to be enshrined in the Peoria Cathedral.”

Based on this ongoing assurance, Bishop Jenky wrote to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in early 2005 asking for the body to be transferred to Peoria. They did not in any way forbid the transfer of the body but simply indicated that it was not the appropriate time. The Congregation indicated that “the transfer was not opportune at this time because the Diocesan inquiry had just been started in the Diocese of Peoria.” With this inquiry complete and a miracle being attributed to Sheen, now is an appropriate time.

On June 27, 2014, the Diocese of Peoria received the most recent communication from the Archdiocese of New York. This letter from its lawyer definitively stated that it would never allow the examination of the body, the securing of relics or the transfer of the body. Upon receiving this shocking statement and consulting with Timothy+Dolan+Annual+Columbus+Day+Parade+NYC+SgNrHrNxTMIladvisors to the Sheen Cause, Bishop Jenky believed that he had no choice but to stop his efforts and suspend the Cause. [Not just shocking, but almost unheard of in the usual flowery prose that constitutes exchanges between bishops.  Saying they will not only not support the cause now, but ever?!?  That sounds very much like someone got their feelings hurt.  Who on earth at the Archdiocese of NY seems to have a truly outsized ego and is constantly seeking applause and accolades from the world, and who will not stomach even the slightest criticism without a harsh response?  I can’t imagine!]

Gibson added, “It is essential to realize that Bishop Jenky now feels a great responsibility to be faithful to the thousands of supporters throughout Central Illinois, the nation and the world, in regard to the status of the cause. From the beginning, Bishop Jenky sought assurances that New York did not want to undertake the Cause and would support Peoria’s efforts. This assurance was given before the process ever began. Bishop Jenky also confirmed that at the appropriate time Fulton Sheen’s body would be transferred to his boyhood home and be placed in a shrine in St. Mary’s Cathedral where he was ordained. Over the last twelve years, countless people have offered their time and financial support for these efforts in order not only to spread the word about Fulton Sheen’s virtues and holiness but also to prepare a shrine in Peoria upon his beatification. After New York clearly turned down the Cause, Peoria was happy to put forth the lengthy work and effort because of how much he is loved by the priests and lay faithful in this Diocese.”

———–End Quote————-

So what do you make of this?  A response of this kind, on such a high profile matter and at such a critical time, could only have come directly from the very highest levels of the increasingly out of control Archdiocese of New York.  That is to say, from Dolan himself.

It is interesting to note that Bishop Jenky has at least a reputation for being at least relatively orthodox, by today’s standards.  And we all know what kind of creature Cardinal Dolan is.  So who knows if a difference in “ecclesiology” entered into this scandal?  But it is shocking that the remains of a likely Saint are being used in such a low game of power politics in the Church.  It is exceedingly difficult to find even a remotely charitable interpretation for his actions, yet again.  He seems almost hell bent of late on giving scandal and general offense.

Dolan is only 63 years old.  I shudder to think what will be the state of the Church in the formerly great Archdiocese of New York if he continues on as he has, and serves another 12+ years.

I pray the Servant of God may sort this out through his intercession!  And Our Blessed Mother, untier of knots!

Perhaps the best way to get concrete aid to suffering Chaldean Catholics right now September 8, 2014

Many local readers will already be aware of this resource, but Chaldean Catholics in the United States are underwriting an aid organization for the Chaldean Catholics in Iraq called helpiraq.org.  From what I am told, and from what the website claims, 100% of your donations go directly to aid an Iraqi Catholic family:

Help Iraq has teamed up with St. Thomas the Apostle Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of the U.S.A and Adopt a Refugee Family to help Iraqi Christians that are enduring extreme hardships. 100% of your donations through Adopt a Refugee Family goes directly to helping Iraqi Christians.

Donations can be made here.  You can also send checks to:

Chaldean Catholic Church
ATT: Mosul Relief
25603 Berg Road
Southfield, MI 48033

There is also some pretty good content worth checking out on the website, aside from the donations page.   A lot of it is calling for more intervention, which some folks here may not like, but if it was my brother or aunt getting clobbered over there, I’d be calling for a Normandy Invasion, too.

I’ve been trying to find a very good charity to recommend to help suffering Catholics in the Mideast, and this is the best I’ve found so far.  Aid to the Church in Need and many other organizations squander a great deal of money on overhead and “advocacy,” I think this group here is probably the safest and most effective way to get aid directly to the suffering, if  you feel so called.

Dominus vobiscum!
