Well this is very timely.  A priest gave a catechesis on Saturday night about the different sins against the cardinal theological (sheesh – my memory) virtues of faith, hope, and charity.  It is possible to sin against all three, of course.  As an example, we sin against charity when we commit an impure act, preferring the love of ourselves and sinful pleasure to the love of God.  However, after we commit such a sin, the virtues of faith and hope remain, so that we may hope we may be forgiven in Confession and have faith that the Confession will be efficacious in removing the guilt of that sin. We can sin against hope and lose charity, but still have faith that we may confess and get back into the state of Grace.  But when we sin against faith, against the Word of God revealed through His Church and all the beliefs of the Church, we are in the most dangerous position, because we are exalting our own paltry reasoning above God’s revelation of Himself and His will for us through His Church, and we are doubting his love for us in giving us all the Truth we need for salvation.  That is why heretics are so difficult to convert, and why they are so dangerous.

Much more from Dom Gueranger below:

We love Thee, and are resolved to be submissive to Thee, O God!  It is Thou that givest rise to the grand virtue, without which it is impossible to please God (Heb XI:6), the virtue which commences the work of man’s salvation, and without which this work could neither be continued nor finished. This virtue is faith. It makes our reason bow down to the word of God. There comes from its divine obscurity a light far more glorious than are all the conclusions of reason, how great soever may be their evidence. This virtue is to be the bond of union in the new society which our Lord is now organizing. To become a member of this society, man must begin by believing; that he may continue to be a member, he must never, not even for one moment, waver in his faith.  We shall soon be hearing our Lord saying these words: He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be condemned (St. Mark XVI:16). [So much for universal salvation, then, and so much false interreligious effort?] The more clearly to express the necessity of faith, the members of the Church are to be called by the beautiful name of the faithful: they who do not believe are go be called infidels.  [Would that we had such clarity again!]

Faith, then, being the first link of the supernatural union between man and God, it follows that this union ceases when faith is broken, that is, denied; and that he who, after having once been thus united to God, breaks the link by rejecting the word of God, and substituting error in its place, commits one of the greatest of crimes.  Such a one will be called a heretic, that is, one who separates himself; and the faithful will tremble at his apostasy.  Even were his rebellion to the revealed word to fall upon only one article, still he commits enormous blasphemy; for he either separates himself from God as being a deceiver, or he implies that his own created, weak and limited reason is superior to eternal and infinite Truth.  [And yet we are surrounded by souls today who claim the name Catholic and yet reject whole slews of Dogmas.  How can this possibly be?  How have we fallen so far?  And where are the shepherds condemning the errors and calling the sheep back to the fold? Instead, incredibly, it seems most shepherds no longer condemn error but seek an accommodation with it?!?  How can this be?  But will the Son of Man find faith when He returns? (St. Luke XVIII:8)]

As time goes on, heresies will rise up, each attacking some Dogma or other; so that scarcely one truth will be left unassailed; but all this will serve for little else than to bring out the revelation purer and brighter than before.  There will, however, come a time, and that time is our own, when heresy will not confine itself to some one particular article of faith; but will proclaim the total independence of reason, and declare revelation to be a forgery.  This impious system will give itself the high-sounding name of rationalism and these are to be its leading doctrines: Christ’s mission a failure and His teaching false; His Church an insult to man’s dignity; the twenty centuries of Christian civilization a popular illusion!  The followers of this school, the so-called philosophers of modern times, would have subverted all society, had not God come to its assistance, and fulfilled the promise He made, never to allow His revealed word to be taken away from mankind, nor the Church, to whom He confided His word, to be destroyed. [Oh Dom Gueranger, pray for us!  We have come to a time when even though the truth of the Faith may not have been entirely taken away, it is proclaimed by so few, and so many have lost it.  Our society seems subverted, so that it seems to more and more of us to be nearing the time of our Lord’s glorious return.]

Others go not so far as this. They do not pretend to deny the benefits conferred on the world by the Christian religion; the facts of history are too evident to be contested: still, as they will not submit their reason to the mysteries revealed by God, they have a way peculiar to themselves for eliminating the element of faith from this world. As every revealed truth, and every miracle confirming divine interposition, is disagreeable to them, they attribute to natural causes every fact which bears testimony to the Son of God being present among us.  They do not insult religion, they simply pass it by; they hold that the supernatural serves no purpose; people, they say, have taken appearances for realities. The laws of history and common sense count for nothing.  Agreeably to their system, which they call naturalism, they deny what they cannot explain; they maintain that the people of the past 20 centuries have been deceived, and that the Creator cannot suspend the laws of nature, just as the rationalists teach that there is nothing above reason.

Are reason and nature, then, to be obstacles to our Redeemer’s love for mankind?  Thanks be to His infinite power, He would not have it so!  As to reason, He repairs and perfects her by faith; and he suspends the laws of nature, that we may cheerfully believe the word whose truth is guaranteed by the testimony of miracles. Jesus is truly risen!  Let reason and nature rejoice, for He has ennobled and sanctified them by the glad mystery.

—————End Quote—————

Dom Gueranger knew dark times. He knew left-wing secularism as the greatest, most total enemy of the Faith.  He saw his own Church in France attacked and subverted by that enemy.  But he saw that Church emerge, somewhat tattered and wounded, after decades of harsh persecution.

What would he think of the Church and world today?  What would he tell us as we face perhaps an even more total, more heinous, persecution?  Surely, he would tell us to cling to our Lord and our Lady.  He would tell us to stay new Jesus at the cross, even as we carry our own.  May God have mercy on all of us, especially those so deranged as to hate the Truth and persecute (and subvert) God’s Holy Church.

The disastrous state of the Church in Germany April 28, 2015

Rorate has a disturbing report quoting internal sources from the Church in Germany on the beliefs and practices of the “pastorally active” in that country, including priests, deacons, and “expert parish collaborators.”  The results are more than dismal.  They are not surprising, however, if one has followed events surrounding the Church in that country going back to before the most recent Council.  What a truly disastrous situation – the richest national church in the country is also one of the most corrupt (go figure!) and unfaithful, yet its immense wealth buys it huge amounts of influence, even over Church-level discussions like the Synod.

Not much good news below.  It’s an incredible thing to say, but they really need prayers for conversion and return to the Faith they have abandoned in huge numbers (emphasis in original, I add comments):

Of the Catholic priests in Germany, only one out of two would be disposed to choosing the celibate life again, a quarter no longer would like to live a celibate life and a quarter declare themselves candidly, “undecided”.  [Doesn’t that add up to pretty much 100% at least very uncomfortable or uncertain about the celibacy of the priesthood?  I don’t know who has been doing the catechizing over there, but they have failed miserably.]  Not a few priests speak of the problem which comes from “affective loneliness” in not having a long-term relationship with another person. [Well, many of us having “long-term relationships” with another person know they bring their own problems with them.  This is no panacea, and yet it seems the German priests view it as such.  How could they arrive at such a uniform conclusion?] According to what is reported, the Tagesspiegel inquiry shows that some priests admit [they have] “an immature relationship with their sexuality, or with their sexual orientation.” [Many faithful priests in this country were also labeled as “immature in their sexuality” because they understood the necessity for chastity and condemned immoral sexual behaviors.  The point being, there was a “good, mature attitude” – the libertine one – and a “bad, immature attitude” – the Catholic one.]
The collection of data was carried out between 2012 and 2014 and had very wide results. The study can be purchased online, but an extensive report is available on the [news] site [of the Cologne Archdiocese] domradio.de…….There is, however, some data, which, apart from every other consideration, gives pause for reflection on the “faith life” of German Catholic communities. A kind of worldliness seems to have taken hold over priests, seeing that 54% of them declare that they go to Confession just once a year (or even less frequently) and is the same for 70% of the deacons. The percentage reaches vertiginous heights with regard to “pastoral assistants”. Only 58% of priests say that they “pray every day or a number of times a day. [An utter disaster.  So a huge percentage persists in a state of grave sin, ignoring a Precept of the Faith?  Almost all deacons and other “pastorally active” individuals either barely satisfy the minimal requirement or fail that, as well?  Nearly half of priests don’t even pray every day!  But it gets worse…..]
To this data we may add that of another survey on German Catholicism of a few months ago, this time by the Allensbach Institute. To the question, “Why are you Catholic?” , 68% of Germans responded saying “Because it allows us to celebrate the important events of life”, and then, immediately after, because “it’s a family tradition”. 60% of the faithful say they don’t believe in life after death, and only a third believe in the Resurrection of Christ.  [So 2/3 off the top aren’t even remotely Christian.  They claim membership for strictly worldly reasons, even while believing all manner of stupid superstitions not even remotely appealing to reason as our entire Faith is…….] One German in four, however, thinks that if a black cat crosses their path, it brings bad luck. Without going into the numbers, we must remember, however, that the German Church statistics for decades have indicated a continuous drop in data referring to the number of priests and the number of participants at Sunday Mass.
This deposit of data, even if in the nature of a summary, is quite indicative of the Catholic Church’s health in Germany. We remember Cardinal Marx’s words when he stated, that the German bishops would have exercised autonomous pastoral decisions on the Synod’s themes, independent of its results, as the German Church – said the Cardinal – was not a mere “subsidiary” of the Roman Church. Without going into questions regarding the relationship between the Vatican and Episcopal Conferences, the doubt persists however, whether these requests are motivated by authentic discernment or by a worldly desire to save what is salvageable.
Or, even more, to keep those Church-tax euros rolling in.  Several billion a year, quite a princely sum! Who cares what they believe, who cares what they do, provided they check that all important box!  Our faithful aren’t excommunicated for failing to satisfy Precepts of the Faith, for gross immorality, and for all manner of heresy……but they can and most assuredly will be excommunicated for failing to check that sacred box!  Check it!  Check it now!
What was that I was saying about government money corrupting absolutely?  And I hadn’t even seen this when I wrote that!

Priest readers! Please consider joining 450 others in signing on to defend the sanctity of Matrimony! April 28, 2015

I know a good number of priests read this blog.  Some of those may be aware that recently, nearly 500 priests from England and Wales signed a statement to the Holy Father and the upcoming Synod indicating their intent to uphold and defend the Church’s constant belief AND practice regarding the Sacrament of Matrimony, reception of the Blessed Sacrament, and all allied issues, and imploring the Holy Father and Synod to do the same.  It seems many more would have signed but were afraid of some kind of retribution had they done so.  This also seems to indicate that there is widespread discomfort with the direction of the first half of the Synod (the “extraordinary Synod”) and the statements Pope Francis has made in regard to same (and had formally inserted into both the mid-term Relatio and the final synodal report).  Signatories came from widely varied outlooks, from priests well known for their adherence to the traditional practice of the Faith, to a good number generally seen as being much more liberally inclined.

At any rate, there is an allied effort directed at priests in North America.  Priests may sign on to endorse the statement of belief here.  The statement is as follows:

To the Synod Fathers:

In union with our brother priests in England and Wales (conforming to the teachings summarized in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1650-51), we make our own the petition they signed urging the Synod Fathers in the upcoming Synod to stand firm on the Church’s traditional understanding of marriage, human sexuality and pastoral practices:

Following the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in Rome in October 2014 much confusion has arisen concerning Catholic moral teaching. In this situation we wish, as Catholic priests, to re-state our unwavering fidelity to the traditional doctrines regarding marriage and the true meaning of human sexuality, founded on the Word of God and taught by the Church’s Magisterium for two millennia.

We commit ourselves anew to the task of presenting this teaching in all its fullness, while reaching out with the Lord’s compassion to those struggling to respond to the demands and challenges of the Gospel in an increasingly secular society. Furthermore we affirm the importance of upholding the Church’s traditional discipline regarding the reception of the sacraments, and the millennial conviction that doctrine and practice remain firmly and inseparably in harmony.

We urge all those who will participate in the second Synod in October 2015 to make a clear and firm proclamation of the Church’s unchanging moral teaching, so that confusion may be removed, and faith confirmed.

It seems several hundred priests have signed, already.  I was gratified to find the names of some priests on the list, and somewhat surprised at the absence of many others. I am hopeful that is due to their being unaware of this effort.  Bringing that awareness to them was the major reason behind this post. There is also a bit of a background check done to confirm that the signatories really are priests and really are signing on themselves (and not, say, by some overeager lay person, perhaps). A few of the names I recognize (450 have signed so far):

Fr. Erik Richsteig
Fr. Philip Neri Powell OP
Fr. Joseph Terra FSSP
Msgr. Charles Pope
Bishop James Conley
Fr. George Rutler
Fr. Jay Finelli
Fr. John Zuhlsdorf
Fr. Kevin Cusick
Fr. Dennis Gordon, FSSP

Waiting to see many more FSSP names on there!  Only about half a dozen so far, out of…..what?  Well over 100 in this country alone, right?  I saw no names I recognized from the Diocese of Dallas.  Of course, it’s hard to search the list at present, and I’m sure that names will show up shortly.

God bless Fr. Jerry Pokorsky for setting this up!  This effort started a little over 3 weeks ago.  God willing, may there be thousands of signatures by the time of the final session of the Sinod.

Let me know if you recognize names on the list!

D’oh!

Just a few examples of the monumental whoppers “science” has tried to sell us over the years April 28, 2015

Just a quick preface – most readers know I am technically trained.  I am a longtime engineer who knows more actual science than the vast majority of the cultural pundits out there who lambaste Christians for having doubts regarding evolution or other dogmas of the current scientific regime.  To better arm ourselves to resist their growing mockery of our very well-reasoned doubts, I thought it might help to have a few incredible whoppers from the past to pull out when we see others – even otherwise devout Catholics – tell us we “must believe in evolution,” or the 16 billion year old universe (or is it 30 billion years old…….or infinitely old?), or global warming cooling climate change weather.

Courtesy Erf Day 40 odd  years ago, some bold scientific claims presented as absolute metaphysical certitude by experts in their respective fields:

1. Harvard biologist George Wald estimated that “civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”

4. “Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make,” Paul Ehrlich confidently declared in the April 1970 Mademoiselle. “The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.” [This guy has always sounded like he enjoyed his fantasies of mass human death just a bit too much.]

6. Ehrlich sketched out his most alarmist scenario for the 1970 Earth Day issue of The Progressive, assuring readers that between 1980 and 1989, some 4 billion people, including 65 million Americans, would perish in the “Great Die-Off.” [As I said……]

7. “It is already too late to avoid mass starvation,” declared Denis Hayes, the chief organizer for Earth Day, in the Spring 1970 issue of The Living Wilderness.

8. Peter Gunter, a North Texas State University professor, wrote in 1970, “Demographers agree almost unanimously  [Doesn’t that sound exactly like the ominous “consensus” of scientific opinion regarding gerbal worming we are always threatened with?]  on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.” [Completely, 100% wrong]

9. In January 1970, Life reported, “Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….” [Leading to global cooling and a new ice age, right!]

12. Paul Ehrlich chimed in, predicting in his 1970 that “air pollution…is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone.” Ehrlich sketched a scenario in which 200,000 Americans would die in 1973 during “smog disasters” in New York and Los Angeles.

14. Ecologist Kenneth Watt declared, “By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’” [These predictions don’t even make sense within their own context.  You have the overexcited George Wald predicting civilization’s demise by 2000, but there is this Watt guy saying well, there may not be any oil.  Which turned out to be absolute balderdash as well, proven reserves today exceed those of 1970 by orders of magnitude.  Unless banned by some draconian leftist government fiat, petroleum will form the basis of our economy well into the 22nd century]

18. Kenneth Watt warned about a pending Ice Age in a speech. “The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years,” he declared. “If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”

The rest here. Hey, scientific hucksterism may not be accurate, but it is profitable.  Many of these people are multi-millionaires.

So what began the period of gross scientific hucksterism that has so deformed the more noble ends of science?  Federal funding that began en masse in reaction to Sputnik and the whole Cold War mobilization of the 50s.  When government funds an activity, no matter how pure or rational, it instantly becomes a primarily political activity.  Science has always had its hucksters, and frauds, but never on a scale like we see today.  Today whole swaths of the “scientific profession” have fallen into nothing but naked political advocacy, detached from any real pursuit of “truth.”  Self-described scientists like Dr. Michael Mann become carnival barkers, trying to shout the loudest to attract the greatest levels of funding (Mann is also, today, a multi, multi-millionaire).

An interesting corollary to consider to the deleterious effect federal funding has had on science, is the effect federal funding, starting at almost the same time, has had on the Church.  Yes, there have always been bishop-politicians, and bishops who preferred to play politics than to care for their sheep, but today this has been refined to an entirely different level, where national bishops conferences in the US, Germany, and other countries receive the lions share of their funding from the national government, and so, naturally, most bishops spend the lions share of their time addressing governmental concerns.  We have seen with CRS and Catholic Charities, even here in our own fair Diocese of Dallas, just how corrosive of good morals and a proper promotion of the Catholic Faith this federal can be.  Overseas, USAID and other agencies seem to be little other than a font of evil and promoters of the grossest aspects of the sexular pagan agenda – using the Church as a willing front for their immoral activities.

Perhaps the lesson is, money corrupts, but federal money corrupts absolutely.

Roaming the cultural battlefield, shooting the survivors and wounded April 28, 2015

That was, I believe, Ann Coulter’s quote on what our dread enemies on the left were doing now that they appear – appear – utterly ascendant in the culture wars at present.  This shooting the wounded is, of course, associated most with the advocates of the current most-radical wing of the sexular pagans, the sodomite lobby.  And two additional data points over the weekend revealed just the extent to which they would go to make sure their opponents are ground into powder, and that the Christian ethos and practice will not just be forced from the public square, but consigned to the ash-heap of history, if they have anything to say about it.

Thus, the incredible savagery and black-hearted hatred necessary not only to destroy the life of a little baker here or a florist there, but insuring that once they have been fined or lawfared out of existence, they not only will not, but cannot receive any aid from like-minded others. In pursuit of that objective, to make sure their enemies are completely, utterly destroyed, and left destitute in the streets (surely, a fitting end for one who simply believes what literally EVERYONE believed just a few short years ago, that marriage is between a man and a woman and no legislation or judge’s order can change that), the radical sodomite left has now coerced Gofundme to obliterate the pages that were raising funds for persecuted Christians, including Barronelle Stutzman and a family with five kids who face a $135,000 judgment from the state of Oregon over this matter!

A crowdfunding campaign that had raised more than $109,000 for the Christian-owned bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa in Oregon was removed Saturday after complaints from gay-rights advocates.

The website GoFundMe said in a statement Saturday that it took down the page because the campaign violated the policy against raising money “in defense of formal charges of heinous crimes, including violent, hateful, or sexual acts.”

“The campaign entitled ‘Sweet Cakes by Melissa‘ involves formal charges. As such, our team has determined that it was in violation of GoFundMe’s Terms & Conditions,” said GoFundMe in an email statement.

The state of Oregon proposed a $135,000 fine to be levied on the Christian-owned bakery, with the money to be paid to a lesbian couple to compensate for their pain and suffering when the cake-makers declined to bake pastry for their wedding.

So, there we have it: the Social Justice Warriors, not content to have driven this bakery out of business, are now trying to prevent people from giving the bakers money to pay their monumental fine. It is not enough for the SJWs that the Klein family business was destroyed. And it is not enough that the Kleins are now struggling to feed their five children, and facing a $135,000 fine that will probably drive them to bankruptcy.

So the connection should be obvious, but let me tie this all together for us.  When Frank Bruni in the New York Times (an active sodomite himself) says that Christians, forming the only real opposition to the sexular pagan agenda at present, must be forced to apostasize and come around to satan’s way of thinking, this is exactly the process by which he envisions this happening.  He sees the leftist-sodomite coalition using the force of government to destroy families and individuals who dare say “no, I won’t participate.”  Not, NO, what you are doing is evil and you must stop or face hell, but just, “no, I won’t participate.”

Why are these people so endlessly vindictive?  I think it should be obvious to all that they are not well.  Our culture is in the midst of handing, if not outright control, a majority controlling share, to some of the most perverse, sick individuals in its midst.  These people have an endless list of slights, gripes, and let downs they have obsessed over since childhood and they have craved revenge for each one of them on a scale and level healthy people cannot imagine.

Thus, the appetite for destruction Christians are faced with is endless. That’s why the metaphor of sodomites policing the battlefield, shooting the wounded is so apt.  Of course, it’s the same old foe that’s always wanted to destroy the Church, but this particular manifestation of persecution is going to be particularly severe because the lead actors are uniquely amoral.  They won’t stop unless they are stopped by an outside force.

Here I must remind that we are dealing with the tiniest of minorities – 1-2% of the population – and probably a good third or more of that number actually do just want to live their lives and not wage a culture war to the death.  Relatively faithful Christians of one stripe or other probably outnumber them 10-1.  But…….and it’s a huge one……….the tiny minority has converted the government to its side.  That’s an incalculable advantage.  It is an utter shame and catastrophe we faithful Christians have allowed that to occur, but it has.

Even still, if the several million observant Christians were to organize and motivate themselves – ourselves – even half as well as the sodomites have, this culture war could take on a very different tone.  If Christians stopped being such pliant sheep, as we have been for decades (and as this country has conditioned us very carefully to be), even at this point things could be turned around.  It would take enormous sacrifice and mean turning a lot of our comfortable lives at least somewhat upside down, but it could be done.  I can’t guarantee victory at this point, because things have gone so far, but I can guarantee a much better settlement, if you will, than the complete capitulation that now faces us.

So……other than reading blogs, spending wasted hours on Facebook, and endless whining, what are you doing to fight the onslaught of evil?  At this point, I don’t think saying “raising a holy family” is quite enough, though it is the bedrock.  I see a lot of people wailing and gnashing teeth, but very few actually doing something to oppose the sexular pagan cabal.  And that is exactly why the other side has won – because we have let them.
