I don’t know about you, but I could use a break June 17, 2015

Here are some funnies for you. Or at least mildly entertaining distractions. With the eco-encyclical bearing down on us tomorrow, and the Church in the US, Britain, and nearly everywhere else in free-fall, sometimes we (or at least I) have to just take a step back and have a laugh:
I accept donations, too.
Remember, you’re supposed to take the entertainment industrial complex seriously. I thought smokers were pariahs to the left? Apparently being a trans-something trumps even that?
And this gem from Eye of the Tiber:
Members of the Synod on the Family scrambled to meet today to discuss what some bishops are calling “a game changer” after Bruce Jenner appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair revealing his new Caitlyn Jenner identity.
The impromptu meeting was called by Cardinal Reinhard Marx to review how they could leverage what he called the potential “straw that broke the discriminatory camel’s back.”
“You guys…tell me you saw Caitlyn on Vanity,” a giddy Marx said to fellow members of the synod as he clutched the magazine tightly to his chest and hopped up and down. “Look at this, look at this…is she not a doll? Listen…she might look like a doll, but she’s human just like us, and deserves the right to become whoever she wants and to do whatever she wants, and we as a Church need to applaud her courage. This is it boys…the day we’ve been waiting for.”
Marx went on to address the council members, asking all those gathered to make proposals for how to get his idea of a more inclusive Church into the official synod document before the “African bishops” found out about it.
WHAT a new springtime! If trends hold, there will be ZERO Christians in Britain by 2067 June 17, 2015

Good Lord, that’s only 52 years away. That’s closer to us than the Cuban Missile Crisis or Texas’ first national championship in football.
The thing is, trends like these always change. As the number of believers decreases the trend lines will flatten out and a bottom will be reached – and that bottom will not be zero. There are a goodly number of very staunch Catholics in Britain having large families and transmitting the Faith to the younger generations. But I had no idea that Christianity was dying in Britain as fast as it is. How long before Oxford becomes a madrassah for the training if islamic imams?
It’s often said that Britain’s church congregations are shrinking, but that doesn’t come close to expressing the scale of the disaster now facing Christianity in this country. Every ten years the census spells out the situation in detail: between 2001 and 2011 the number of Christians born in Britain fell by 5.3 million — about 10,000 a week. If that rate of decline continues, the mission of St Augustine to the English, together with that of the Irish saints to the Scots, will come to an end in 2067………
……..Our cathedral buildings will survive, but they won’t be true cathedrals because they will have no bishops. The Church of England is declining faster than other denominations; if it carries on shrinking at the rate suggested by the latest British Social Attitudes survey, Anglicanism will disappear from Britain in 2033. One day the last native-born Christian will die and that will be that. [I doubt that. But I do look forward to the day that the false, heretical “Church” of England no longer exists. I pray all the souls belonging to it experience a real conversion and convert to the Church Christ founded, which isn’t doing all that well, either.]
……..It has all happened so quickly. Anglicans in particular are abandoning their faith at a rate that (in more ways that one) defies belief. According to the British Social Attitudes surveys, their numbers fell from 40 per cent of the population in 1983 to 29 per cent in 2004 and 17 per cent last year……
……His predecessor but one, however, is happy to do so. Lord Carey of Clifton, a more formidable figure in retirement than he was in office, last month warned the C of E that it was ‘one generation away from extinction’. The new Social Attitudes figures support his conclusions.
Between 2012 and 2014 the proportion of Britons describing themselves as Church of England or Anglican fell from 21 to 17 per cent: a loss of 1.7 million people in two years. That’s what you might expect if the established church had been engulfed in a gigantic paedophile scandal. But it hasn’t been.
Self-identifying British Catholics fell from 10 per cent to 8 per cent between 1983 and 2014. But that decline would have been far more dramatic without the arrival of Catholics from the Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Philippines. No wonder Cardinal Vincent Nichols stresses the ‘Gospel imperative’ to welcome migrants. [Yep. Same as the situation here in the US]
But he’s deluding himself if he thinks foreign Catholics will continue to fill his pews. Young Poles in England and Wales are noticeably less devout than they were ten years ago: I’d be amazed if more than a fifth of them were Mass-goers.
This applies to Scotland, too. The Poles propping up Catholic parishes won’t do so for much longer. Meanwhile, self-identification with the Church of Scotland has fallen off a cliff: from 36 per cent of Scots in 2001 to 18 per cent in 2013.
[So……why is this happening?] Why is British Christianity facing such a catastrophe? There is a one-word answer, but it requires a lot of unpacking: secularisation.
……….The American sociologist James Davison Hunter has explored this phenomenon in two books, Culture Wars (1991) and To Change the World(2010). Hunter is rude about left-wing Christians who think campaigns against carbon emissions or campus sexism are ‘Gospel causes’. On the contrary, he says, they are thoroughly secular and even if they succeed the churches won’t benefit……….
The author, Damian Thompson, as he is wont to do, then jumps the shark by saying that “conservative,” or more rightly put, faithful, observant Christianity and especially Catholicism aren’t the answer against secularization, either, because Roe v. Wade still hasn’t been repealed or something, an argument as nonsensical as it is meaningless. For instance, Thompson failed to note that the most conservative evangelical sects are among the fastest growing entities in American Christianity. Traditional Catholic parishes, while tiny by comparison, are generally growing, and quite rapidly. That would seem to point that being observant is, far from doomed to impotence, at least on the right track, if far from exercising a culture-wide influence…….yet.
But the data, if not his commentary, does raise an interesting point: there has been a sudden explosion in departures from the Church in the few remaining developed, Western countries where it was still being fairly widely practiced. Why? Why has membership in traditional Christian churches (not evangelical sects) suddenly plummeted, and especially in the past 5-10 years?
I think the answer, secularization is right, but I think Thompson misses the forest for the trees. What kind of secularization? Militant, left-wing secularization is proliferating rapidly through the leftist “march through the institutions.” They now control, by and large, the media, schools, academia, and the entertainment industry. In order to shield ourselves from all this crap, faithful families have to literally unplug from the culture. The first generation is coming to adulthood after the completion of this process, and they are turning out to be very indifferent, even hostile, to orthodox religion, after years of being formed to be exactly that. I think the internet and the notion of avant garde hipster culture also plays a huge role. That is why we have suddenly seen an unexpected explosion in really fringe, radical feminism from college age women in the past several years, as just one example. There are many others, from the sodomite front to global warming evangelizing…..our young people are profoundly religious, it’s simply that their religion is for the most part leftism. Some will come back or enter the Church as they age, but most will not.
Some things that more and more people are positively turned off to include some of the ways in which modernists try to sell the Church, to the extent they even try: desperation, obvious attempts to be cool, pandering, etc. Nothing turns off someone looking for the veracity of faith as much as a religion that seems unsure of itself, or even more, seems to stand for nothing. I think those two factors are the two predominate reasons both the Church and the mainline sects have been hemorrhaging the most members. And the eco-encyclicals, while bringing momentary notoriety, will only turn off lost souls looking for a safe harbor, and cause the Church’s enemies to mock her even more.
The only thing that will bring souls into the Church, and keep them there, is for the Church to be herself once again. But I’m afraid the powers that be are utterly insistent the Church go through complete collapse before we can even begin get back to that point.
Sister Lucia: “Final Confrontation between the Lord and Satan will be over family and marriage” June 17, 2015

A great post from Rorate today on Cardinal Caffara’s report of a conversation he had with Sister Lucia before her death. Cardinal Caffara relates that Sister Lucia told him that the final confrontation between God and satan would center around the family and marriage. That certainly seems to be a prophesy unfolding before our saddened eyes over the past several decades:
Q. There is a prophecy by Sister Lucia dos Santos, of Fatima, which concerns “the final battle between the Lord and the kingdom of Satan”. The battlefield is the family. Life and the family. We know that you were given charge by John Paul II to plan and establish the Pontifical Institute for the Studies on Marriage and the Family.Yes, I was. At the start of this work entrusted to me by the Servant of God John Paul II, I wrote to Sister Lucia of Fatima through her Bishop as I couldn’t do so directly. Unexplainably however, since I didn’t expect an answer, seeing that I had only asked for prayers, I received a very long letter with her signature – now in the Institute’s archives. In it we find written:the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don’t be afraid, she added, because anyone who works for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be fought and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue. And then she concluded: however, Our Lady has already crushed its head.Talking also to John Paul II, you felt too that this was the crux, as it touches the very pillar of creation, the truth of the relationship between man and woman among the generations. If the founding pillar is touched the entire building collapses and we see this now, because we are at this point and we know it. And I’m moved when I read the best biographies of Padre Pio , on how this man was so attentive to the sanctity of marriage and the sanctity of the spouses, even with justifiable rigor on occasion.
One Peter Five also notes that Sister Lucia is hardly alone in making this prediction. The incredibly specific revelations made by Our Lady of Good Success in Quito, Ecuador in the 1600s point to the same matter as being the crux of this final conflict:
“Thus I make it known to you that from the end of the 19th century and shortly after the middle of the 20th century…the passions will erupt and there will be a total corruption of morals… As for the Sacrament of Matrimony, which symbolizes the union of Christ with His Church, it will be attacked and deeply profaned. Freemasonry, which will then be in power, will enact iniquitous laws with the aim of doing away with this Sacrament, making it easy for everyone to live in sin and encouraging procreation of illegitimate children born without the blessing of the Church… In this supreme moment of need for the Church, the one who should speak will fall silent.”
“The one who should speak will fall silent……” A disturbing prediction for all of us, but I would have to think this is a direct reference to the highest authority in the Church.
As I’ve noted on this blog a few times recently, Our Lady has been warning us most emphatically through the most remarkable series of apparitions ever witnessed that we are embroiled in the final struggle between Christ and all the forces of darkness. Our Lady has warned us at Quito, Fatima, La Sallete, and Akita that the Church would enter an unprecedented time of division, error, apostasy, and persecution. And our Mother has warned us that much of the hierarchy would fall into the most grievous of errors, or, even more, go over into a hostile and competing religion and one aligned with the false, demonic religion of the gentiles (all of whose gods are demons). In point of fact, our Lady also made this direct reference to the fall of most clergy:
“The Sacred Sacrament of Holy Orders will be ridiculed, oppressed and despised. …The demon will try to persecute the Ministers of the Lord in every possible way and he will labor with cruel and subtle astuteness to deviate them from the spirit of their vocation, corrupting many of them. These corrupted priests, who will scandalize the Christian people, will incite the hatred of the bad Christians and the enemies of the Roman, Catholic and Apostolic Church to fall upon all priests. This apparent triumph of Satan will bring enormous sufferings to the good Pastors of the Church.…” [That’s always been at least somewhat the case, but there haven’t been too many times when the corruption of the priesthood has been as deep and all-encompassing as it is now]
Our Lady said, “…the secular Clergy will leave much to be desired because priests will become careless in their sacred duties. Lacking the divine compass, they will stray from the road traced by God for the priestly ministry, and they will become attached to wealth and riches, which they will unduly strive to obtain. How the Church will suffer during this dark night! Lacking a Prelate and Father to guide them with paternal love, gentleness, strength, wisdom and prudence, many priests will lose their spirit, placing their souls in great danger. This will mark the arrival of My hour.”
The reference to Freemasonry above is all the more remarkable because that benighted sect dedicated to the service of the world, the flesh, and the devil wasn’t even formally started until over 150 years after these apparitions occurred.
Where is our Saint Vincent? Where is our great Saint who travels the world preaching repentance and mortification? Where is the man proclaiming the end is near if we do not repent and convert? Has he been stifled? Where are the great Saints in the Church today (aside from every post-conciliar pontiff, naturally)?
I guess that’s why we’re in such a crisis. There aren’t many, if any, such Saints, or if they are, they are very well hidden.
Then the duty must fall to us, no?
Pope Francis: nations that block illegal immigration should seek God’s forgiveness June 17, 2015

The hits, they just keep on coming. In his Wednesday audience today, Pope Francis called for “respect for migrants” and stated that those who seek to curb illegal immigration should seek God’s forgiveness. You can try to lambaste the secular site quoted below as being biased, but, just to quell that temptation, I also provide Rome Reports’ video of his audience that includes the same message.
Pope Francis on Wednesday called for respect for migrants and suggested that “people and institutions” who close doors to them should seek forgiveness from God.
The pope’s appeal, made at the end of his weekly general audience, came amid growing debate in Europe on how to deal with an immigrant crisis that has included clashes at the French-Italian borer between police and migrants.
“I invite you all to ask forgiveness for the persons and the institutions who close the door to these people who are seeking a family, who are seeking to be protected,” he said in unscripted remarks delivered in a somber voice.
France and Austria have stepped up border controls on migrants coming from Italy, turning back hundreds and leaving growing numbers camped out in train stations in Rome and Milan…….
……The pope said “these brothers and sisters of ours are seeking refuge far from their lands, they are seeking a home where they can live without fear.”
He asked for prayers that their “human dignity always be respected” and urged the international community to “work together and efficiently to prevent the causes of forced migration”.
The video (quote begins at 1:54):
So, he actually asks for prayers of forgiveness for those who “close doors” to mass illegal immigration, such as both the US and Western Europe have been experiencing for some years.
Look, irrespective of what this Pope says, we have a Magisterium that provides the moral guidelines for dealing with such mass movements. The Catholic Faith does not require that nations, whether wealthier or not, simply open their borders to anyone and everyone who seeks entry. Determining just limits on such migration, or attempting to block it entirely, are prudential decisions that are based on numerous factors, including the readiness and ability of immigrants to assimilate into the existing culture of a nation, potential threats to the livelihoods and safety of already existing citizens (which must be prioritized over all immigrants, and especially those who immigrate illegally), potential for disease vectors/mass outbreaks of illness, being members of a highly violent religion whose beliefs are antithetical to the good of souls and the right Christian ordering of Western culture…..there are literally dozens more. Yes countries, especially those which are more well-off, should certainly strive to be as welcoming to the stranger as possible, but that welcoming is as always governed by prudence. Strongly implying that nations or groups who see a problem with a huge influx of new immigrants – especially those who have a proven track-record of a propensity towards violence, refusal to assimilate, and who tend to live off the welfare state disproportionately – are somehow morally derelict (and need to implore God’s forgiveness) is really beyond the pale. That’s not a Catholic belief.
It is progressive belief, however, at least for now. That’ll change, of course, once mass immigration stops serving progressive ends. And then such statements now so welcomed by progressives will be reviled, which is why previous more prudent Popes ventured into such highly charged prudential judgments with much more trepidation and carefulness of thought. And, there is the flip side, while the Pope may give progressives tingles with statements like these, he is likely causing angst in a nearly equal number of people who don’t share his progressive outlook.
I should note in closing that the statements regarding migrants were yet another in the endless series of off-the-cuff remarks this Pope makes. Which propensity forces me to conclude that either this Pope is wildly imprudent in speech, or he knows exactly what he is doing. I’ll let you be the judge of that.
Co-Presenter of climate change encyclical believes 6 billion humans need to die June 17, 2015

He said so during a presentation to the last major global climate conference in 2009 in Copenhagen. Another conference is to be held in Paris later this year. Note that the literally thousands of those who make their quite comfortable livings off the global warming hoax all FLY to these conferences, most often first class, and they stay in the very finest hotels and eat rich foods. In other words, like Al Gore, they most certainly do not practice what they preach. And in calling for the establishment of a new transnational one world government to dictate economic policy in order to “combat global warming,” they see themselves as the indispensable new aristocracy, enjoying all the riches the world has to offer while we starve and shiver in the cold.
Yeah, that’s going to work:
One of the speakers slated for the Vatican rollout of the long-awaited Papal document on climate change once said the earth is overpopulated by at least 6 billion people.
The teaching document, called an encyclical, is scheduled for release on June 18 at Vatican City. Perhaps with the exception of the 1968 encyclical on contraception, no Vatican document has been greeted with such anticipation. [I have to say, this is probably right. I plan on reviewing some of the coverage later, even though the thing isn’t officially released, yet.]
The choice of Professor John Schnellnhuber, founding director of the Postdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, as one of three presenters may be giving the left added hope and giving giving skeptics severe heartburn. He has been described as one of the more aggressive scientists on the question of man-made global warming.
In a talk given to what’s described as the “failed” 2009 Copenhagen climate conference, reported in the New York Times, Schnellnhuber, who has advised German President Angela Merkel and is a visiting professor at Oxford, said of global warming: “In a very cynical way, it’s a triumph for science because at last we have stabilized something –- namely the estimates for the carrying capacity of the planet, namely below 1 billion people.” [Oh BS. Anyone who advocates such is a seething misanthrope. And yet he now is being touted by the VATICAN as someone souls should trust implicitly for guidance on matters related to what passes for climate science anymore]
Schnellnhuber is also author of what’s called the “two-degree target” that says governments must not allow the temperature to rise more than 2 degrees higher than at the start of the industrial revolution. Any higher, the theory holds, and much life on earth would either perish or be gravely harmed. [Another baseless assertion.]
[As with so much of “science” today, it is the politics that drive the scientific conclusion…..]To deal with climate issues, he has also called for an “Earth Constitution that would transcend the UN Charter” along with the creation of a “Global Council…elected by all the people on Earth”
The Pontifical Academy of Sciences, to which Pope Francis just promoted this Schnellnhuber character, is also on record as calling for “population control.” Sounds like this guy will fit right in.
I’m seeing gobs of coverage on the encyclical, but I don’t plan on joining that fray just yet. I imagine what is out there is at least extremely close to what will be revealed tomorrow, but I am really coming to the point where I think what the encyclical “really says” is less important than its significance as an event a la Vatican II. Thus, it’s quite possible its purpose has been achieved already, which is to signal to the world again that the Church has taken yet another decisive step in its direction. In which case, we shall all be the poorer for it.
Justifying myself a bit: look at the optics. There are few issues, short of straight up endorsement of pseudo-sodo-marriage, which I think is still impossible even for this Pope, that could get the left huffing and puffing more than an embrace of the progressive approach to “climate change.” We saw that in the silly video yesterday. They’re already spiking the ball in the endzone, and maybe that was the point -to signal yet again that this Pope is one of them, one of the “good guys,” and to stir up just a bit more excitement about the Church finally and fully embracing the worldly zeitgeist.
Just my opinion. It’s worth what it cost you.
New Brazilian Bishop Commands Faithful to receive Communion in the Hand at Consecration June 17, 2015

Yet another one of those little dramas that play out so often in the Church. For those who endure them, these experiences can be very painful. Newly appointed Bishop Wilson Filho of Brazil demanded that the souls kneeling to receive the Blessed Sacrament at his Consecration Mass instead receive in the hand. It is not known how many complied (this Catholic would have either gone ahead and received kneeling and on the tongue, or abstained):
Do Luis Angotti Wilson Filho made the worst start possible start as he takes over his diocese. During Communion he asked kneeling faithful to stand up. Fratres in Unum criticized the behavior of the new bishop as “outrageous behavior”.
On June 13, the inauguration of the new Bishop of Taubaté in Brazil took place. Pope Francis had appointed Dom Luís Angotti Wilson Filho last April 15th as the new bishop of the southern Brazilian diocese……
……..As for the faithful who knelt for Communion at the inauguration last Saturday, they were “shamelessly” asked by their new bishop, said Fratres in Unum , to stand up and receive Hand Communion. “Excellency, are you not ashamed to begin your episcopal ministry in this historic diocese by such an embarrassing disregard of the law of the Church, which assures the faithful that right?” The Canon Law explicitly provides oral communion as the full and actual form of the reception of Communion while Communion in the hand had been authorized only in the post-conciliar period as an exception…… [And yet in most places this practice, which started as an abuse and was then “regularized” under threat of schism by Pope Paul VI, is not only normative, but widely insisted upon. The US bishops have declared, I would say erroneously, that Communion in the hand is the normative manner of receiving in the US. How can something instituted as a rare exception be “normative?”]
……The Spanish church historian and well-known Catholic blogger Francisco Fernandez de la Cigoña described the new bishop for his handling of the believers, in direct and colorful language, as “Chulo de mierda”. [Umm……that’s certainly colorful. It’s a bit beyond the kind of language I would personally use] “If the bishop does not respect the faithful, why should the faithful respect their bishop? I am not subject fortunately, to this idiot and therefore am without fear of his shepherd’s crook to say what I think,” said de la Cigoña.
The appointment of Dom Luís Angotti Wilson Filho as auxiliary bishop of Belo Horizonte took place when Msgr. Lorenzo Baldisseri was Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil. Pope Francis named Baldisseri in September 2013, Secretary-General of the Synod of Bishops and raised him in February 2014 to the cardinal state. At the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops last October, he played an inglorious role.
And has continued to do so since. It was Archbishop Baldisseri who insisted that the faithful had no right to question the direction of the Synod, stated that the Synod documents included scandalous statements at Pope Francis’ insistence, blocked the distribution of a book of orthodox theology on marriage from distribution to the Synod Fathers, and proclaimed that Doctrine can “evolve.” He’s an all around champion of orthodoxy, I tell ya.
So perhaps it is little wonder his creature would take such a dim view of reverent reception of the Blessed Sacrament.
Move along, nothing to see here. Just a revolution in action.
