Just who is Bernie Sanders? February 2, 2016

Given that Bernie Sanders is now looking like a genuine threat to Hilary Clinton (who only won more delegates in Iowa by winning – get this – 6 consecutive coin tosses), I thought you might like to know a bit more about him.  Yes, he’s a boor, yes, he’s a socialist, yes, he’s a radical, but he’s a member of that special breed of radical, you know, the completely unaccomplished malcontent who sits around the den all day, getting high and watching TV on other people’s dimes while whining about capitalism and how the “man” is keeping him down.

Yeah, a loser:

……..His family managed to send him to the University of Chicago. Despite a prestigious degree, however, Sanders failed to earn a living, even as an adult. It took him 40 years to collect his first steady paycheck — and it was a government check[Look, lots of people struggle to find a career.  But most people can hold down a steady job.  This guy, apparently not.  And even with a degree from a prestigious university]

“I never had any money my entire life,” Sanders told Vermont public TV in 1985, after settling into his first real job as mayor of Burlington.

Sanders spent most of his life as an angry radical and agitator who never accomplished much of anything. And yet now he thinks he deserves the power to run your life and your finances — “We will raise taxes;” he confirmed Monday, “yes, we will.” [I have a guy I used to be friends with.  Anyway, he sounds a lot like Sander.  He was brilliant.  Truly intellectually gifted. He got a degree at a prestigious private university, largely paid for by his National Merit Scholarship, could have made a pile of money, but he knew to get started in his chosen field would take a great deal of hard work and some years of not making very much. He didn’t want that. He wanted it all, now, because he was Mr. Gifted, and just deserved it.  Also, he wanted to travel and drink and cavort around.  And he did.  He had a lot of fun for a while.  But then he started becoming very negative, very liberal.  He had low self-esteem because he knew he had blown both his education and his gifts. He started blaming “the system” and “the 1%” because he had turned 40 years old and was still working occasional entry-level jobs between lavish trips. Everything was somebody else’s fault. He felt – feels – screwed because everyone didn’t recognize his innate brilliance and just hand him a $200k a year job.  That’s increasingly common these days]

One of his first jobs was registering people for food stamps, and it was all downhill from there.

Sanders took his first bride to live in a maple sugar shack with a dirt floor, and she soon left him. Penniless, he went on unemployment. Then he had a child out of wedlock. [Remember back when a presidential candidate even being divorced, let alone having a bastard child, would have meant instant disqualification.  Now we have this guy, and Trump with his multiple divorces and bragging over bedding married women (among other things).  Shows how total the moral collapse in this country has been.] Desperate, he tried carpentry but could barely sink a nail. “He was a shi**y carpenter,” a friend told Politico Magazine. “His carpentry was not going to support him, and didn’t.”

Then he tried his hand freelancing for leftist rags, writing about “masturbation and rape” and other crudities for $50 a story. He drove around in a rusted-out, Bondo-covered VW bug with no working windshield wipers. Friends said he was “always poor” and his “electricity was turned off a lot.” They described him as a slob who kept a messy apartment — and this is what his friends had to say about him.

The only thing he was good at was talking … non-stop … about socialism and how the rich were ripping everybody off. “The whole quality of life in America is based on greed,” the bitter layabout said. “I believe in the redistribution of wealth in this nation.” [It is frightening the degree to which naked advocacy of socialism has become an acceptable political platform in this country.  I’m not surprised, though, it’s the natural result of the Left’s long march through the institutions.  Nevertheless, if Sanders is by some strange happenstance the democrat candidate, he loses in McGovern-like fashion to any likely Republican.  Not only for his extreme beliefs, but because he is a lousy, boring candidate]

So he tried politics, starting his own socialist party. Four times he ran for Vermont public office, and four times he lost — badly. He never attracted more than single-digit support — even in the People’s Republic of Vermont. In his 1971 bid for U.S. Senate, the local press said the 30-year-old “Sanders describes himself as a carpenter who has worked with ‘disturbed children.’ ” In other words, a real winner.

He finally wormed his way into the Senate in 2006…… [the watershed year where popular disgust with the ongoing Iraq war ushered in a flood of radical new democrat candidates. It also laid the groundwork for Obama.  Thanks, Bush 43.]

Well…….there you go.  One of the top four candidates of the two parties.  He will likely win going away in New Hampshire, and then lose in South Carolina (if the polls are any indication).  Then follows Nevada and Super Tuesday, but right now Hilary generally holds a lead in most states.  Not that I have any interest in seeing her elected, she should already be held in jail pending trial for her massive felonies associated with holding classified information on her “private” e-mail server……among other things.

I was gratified to see Cruz win, though it looks like he’s going to get slaughtered in New Hampshire.  I fear Rubio is the stalking horse for the establishment.  He did better than expected.  Not that I’m sure how much any of this matters at this point, with the nation sinking more and more into an amoral, irreligious abyss. Sorry to be negative, but things don’t exactly look cheery right now.

Sorry if blogging wasn’t so great today. I was pretty distracted.

IOC to allow “transgender” men to compete in women’s events February 2, 2016

Well, I suspect we’ll start seeing a whole lot of records being broken.  Now any man who is quite athletic but not quite gold medal material can go on female hormones for a while and, voila, gold city.

Is there ever any end to the sickness?  We haven’t even begun to adjust to the new, state-enforced “reality” of pseudo-sodo-marriage, and they’re already trying to force this mental illness of transgenderism down our throats.  And what kind of a society lets men pretending to be women beat the living daylights out of a woman, and for prize money?!?

“I’ve never felt so overpowered in my life,” said female mixed martial arts fighterTamikka Brents. “I’ve fought a lot of women and have never felt the strength that I felt in a fight as I did that night. I can’t answer whether it’s because she was born a man or not, because I’m not a doctor. I can only say I’ve never felt so overpowered ever in my life, and I am an abnormally strong female.” [Go figure.  The vast majority of men are stronger, an usually vastly so, than the vast majority of women.  God designed us for different things.]

The woman Brents was referring to isn’t a woman at all, but transgender MMA fighter Fallon Fox, who fights as a woman against women. Brent felt the full weight of what it was like to fight a man, and even with all her training and strength, she quickly fell to Fox.

Transgenderism has invaded the public consciousness, raising awareness of gender dysphoria; but not as the disorder linked to depression and suicides at an alarmingly high rate, but a celebrated identity everyone must respect—or else. [Absolutely.  Just as with the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah, the truth has to be buried and a lie carefully constructed to conceal the truth and advance the sexular pagan agenda] The concept of transgenderism has become so pervasive that a man can step into the ring with a woman and pummel her for money, and the media will cheer for him.

What Brents reportedly experienced at Fox’s hands was a concussion and a broken orbital bone that required staples. In other words, this woman was savaged by an opponent that was genetically advantaged with a thicker bone structure, longer reach, and denser musculature—or, put more simply, was a man. Fox was able to do this despite hormone treatments that made him more feminine in certain aspects. [Which treatments dramatically raise the risk of cancer and also cause a greatly increased reach of psychosis, or dramatically unstable behavior]

………it should be common sense to not pit men against women in any serious sporting event, regardless of any hormone treatment or any genital surgery. [It might make even more sense to bar men from beating up women, and those with severe mental problems from high-profile public events]

This has not been the opinion of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), however, which has been allowing transgender athletes to compete against athletes not of their sex since 2004. They had formerly allowed transgender athletes to compete if they had fully transitioned with cross-sex hormones and surgery. As Fox demonstrates, this transition makes very little difference to a fully trained athlete.

But now the IOC has recommended ending the surgery requirement. In the “IOC Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism” report, the committee recommends that a male-to-female transgender “must demonstrate that her total testosterone level in serum has been below 10 nmol/L for at least 12 months prior to her first competition.” Female-to-male transgendered athletes may register to compete with male athletes without restriction. [What a freaking disaster]

Insanity.  The Western world has completely lost its mind.  I know better than to ask whether there is any end.  Christ or chaos.  By rejecting God, there is no end to the depth of depravity to which individuals, and an entire culture, can sink.

But one would think, we have to be nearing some kind of tipping point, where things really begin to break down due to rampant insanity and unreality.  So many people have constructed a view of the world so dramatically counter to reality that it is amazing they are able to function, but not only do they function, they have dictated to the rest of us how things will be as they have served as totems to advance the revolution against Christendom.

Bah.  I could go on forever.  I’ve said all this before.  It’s just sick.  And, BTW, the NCAA is considering adopting the IOC’s position.

Fr. Lasance on preparation for Confession February 2, 2016

I got a new (old) book by Fr. Lasance called The Prisoner of Love.  I really find great value in these older devotional books (this one dates from about 100 years ago) than the newer ones.  The book is focused on being a resource for prayer and meditation during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, but has some other material for Confession, the Mass, and general prayer outside of church.

I  thought some of the material on preparation for Confession was useful, so here it is.  Note, I don’t get into the detailed examinen, there are numerous resources available for such.  What is below is a prayer and some discourse on how to prepare oneself, on a fundamental level, for making a good confession (all emphasis mine):

Before Confession

Reflect that this confession may be the last of your life.  Therefore, prepare yourself for it as if you were lying sick upon your deathbed, and already at the brink of the grave. Ask God to give you the Grace to make a good examination of conscience, the light to see your sins clearly, and the strength to make a sincere confession and to amend your life.

Most merciful God, Father in Heaven, relying on Thy goodness and mercy, I come to Thee with filial confidence to confess my sins and to implore Thy forgiveness.  Thou wilt not despise a contrite and humble heart.  Bless me and receive me again into Thy favor; I acknowledge that I have been most ungrateful to Thee, but I sincerely repent and detest the wrong I have done, and I desire henceforth to walk in the way of perfection, in accordance with Thy holy will.

O Jesus, my Savior, my good Shepherd, I have strayed far from the path that Thou hast marked out for me; I did not follow in Thy footsteps; I wandered into forbidden places.  Repentant and sorrowful, I beg to be admitted again into the fold of Thy faithful followers.  I want to confess my sins with perfect sincerity, as if I were at the point of death.  My Jesus, I look to Thee with confidence for the Grace to examine my conscience well.

O Holy Spirit, come to Thy mercy; enlighten my mind and strengthen my will that I may know my sins, humbly confess them, and sincerely amend my life.

Mary, my mother, Immaculate Spouse of the Holy Ghost, refuge of sinners, assist me by the intercession.

Holy angels and saints of God, pray for me.  Amen.

Examination of Conscience

Begin examining yourself on your last confession: Whether a grievous sin was forgotten through want of proper examination, or concealed or disguised through shame.  Whether you confessed without a true sorrow and a firm purpose of amendment.  Whether you have repaired evil done to  your neighbor.  Whether the penance was performed without voluntary distractions.  Whether you have neglected your confessor’s counsel, and fallen at once into habitual sin. [Those are all really good recommendations.  Priests relate that failure to confess grave sins out of embarrassment is a rampant problem, by virtue of the fact that they have so many souls reveal to them at a last confession that they had failed to confess this sin or that out of shame.  DON’T DO IT!  Don’t be afraid, the priests have heard everything imaginable. You are not uniquely bad.  If yo have some sin you’ve been too afraid to confess, please don’t sit on it.  Both Liguori and Aquinas say many souls fall into hell out of sins they were too afraid to confess, which is a timorous sin against the charity of God and reveals secret pride.  Also important are performing penance in a focused manner, without distractions, and neglecting counsel.  I know I have been lax in some of the penances I have performed]

Then examine yourself on the Ten Commandments, the commandments of the Church, the seven capital sins, the duties of your state of life, and your ruling passion. Calmly recall the different occasions of sin which have fallen in your way, or to which your state and condition in life expose you, the places you have frequented, the persons with whom you have associated. Do not neglect to consider the circumstances which alter the grievousness of the sin, nor the various ways in which we become accessory to the sins of others.

———-End Quote———

Anyway, maybe some of that is obvious, but I thought the bits on examination and making each confession as if it were your last were good reminders.

Just a thought, are there any “modern” – say, post-conciliar – prayer or devotional books that you consider really good? I have used Fr. Hardon’s Catholic Prayer Book for years but really think some of the older ones are better.  But I’m always on the lookout for good resources to recommend, so if you have any thoughts, let me know.

Would you, in your charity, pray for your host? February 2, 2016

The company I work at is not doing well.  At all.  It has not been for a long time.  It never recovered from the telecom implosion of the early 00s.  Like Nortel and many others before it, it looks like our Japanese sponsors may finally have tired of running an operation in the US that loses money almost every year.

Sooo…..there is another round of layoffs.  This makes the 9th round I’ve experienced since coming back here in 2008.  An entire office in New York is being shut down.  It looks like the company is going to almost entirely abandon its local hardware and mechanical design teams.  There will be another round next month.  If I weather those, there will be a six-twelve month hiatus, if past experience is any guide.

There may be a small design staff kept going here locally for some time to support sustaining efforts, perhaps for a year or even several.  But I need wisdom to know whether this is finally the time to jump ship or if I should wait it out.  It’s much easier to find a job if you already have one.

I also, of course, have a baby on the way and a large family to provide for.  So if you would please, in your charity, pray for me and my family, that I may either weather this round of layoffs or find like employment elsewhere, I’d appreciate it.  Your prayers are so greatly appreciated.

Start Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes today.  She Is The Immaculate Conception!

O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comfort to the Afflicted,

you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Deign to cast upon me a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it  a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favors; and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.

I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain,  O loving Mother, the granting of my requests.  (mention your intentions here)

Through gratitude for favors, I will endeavor to imitate your virtues that I may one day share your glory.

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Amen.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Another nice accompanying prayer:

Two prayers to prepare the universal celebration of Our Lady of Lourdes, on February 11

Mary, you showed yourself to BernadetteLOURDESMARY_BERNA4inchcopy1
in the crevice of the rock.
In the cold and grey of winter,
you brought the warmth, light and beauty
of your presence,

In the often obscure depths of our lives,
in the depth of the world where evil is so powerful,
bring hope,
return our confidence!

You are the Immaculate Conception,
come to our aid, sinners that we are.474718093_70c533b5f9
Give us the humility to have a change of heart,
the courage to do penance.
Teach us to pray for all people.

Guide us to the source of true life.
Make us pilgrims going forward with your Church,
whet our appetite for the Eucharist,
the bread for the journey, the bread of life.

The Spirit brought about wonders in you, O Mary :
by his power, he has placed you near the Father,
in the glory of your eternal Son.
Look with kindness
on our miserable bodies and hearts.
Shine forth for us, like a gentle light,
at the hour of our death.

Together with Bernadette, we pray to you, O Mary,
as your poor children.glory4
May we enter, like her, into the spirit of the Beatitudes.
Then, we will be able, here below,
begin to know the joy of the Kingdom of Heaven
and sing together with you :
Magnificent !

Glory to you, Virgin Mary,
blessed servant of the Lord,
Mother of God,
dwelling place of the Holy Spirit!

Mach-bustin’ Monday – Phabulous Phantoms Phorever – UPDATED! February 2, 2016

Eh…….lame.  Gotta think of a new name for relocated Flightline Friday’s.  Back in the 1990s, the Nevada Air National Guard 192nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (TRS) was one of the last Phantom operators in US service. In fact, they were the dead last to fly the RF-4C recon variant, right up until October 1995.  Only the F-4G defense suppression variant lasted longer in the Guard, and that only until the next year.

You don’t see flying like this in the Air Force much anymore.  You will see Phantoms at 20 feet off the deck, you will hear the sound barrier broken (twice), and you will see aircraft do tail stands over lakes, kicking up a huge amount of spray. This is the Air Force I loved and wanted so much to be a part of, but it hardly exists anymore, even in the Guard (which has always been a bit wilder and a bit less straight laced than the active duty and Air Force Reserve).

I don’t know anything about the guy who posted the videos, only that he had a close association with the 192nd TRS and may have been a pilot himself.  He posted some movies with lame-o music, but the ones I chose all have the beautiful sound of two roaring General Electric J79-GE-8 engines:

The Phantoms of the 192 TRS (and Alabama ANG, and active duty Phantoms out of Bergstrom) served in Desert Storm.  They joined F-4Gs out of George and Spangdahlem as the only Phantoms in the Gulf War (though Pave Tack equipped F-4Es of the 4th TFW at Seymour Johnson only missed the conflict by one day).

Mostly just taxi and takeoff in that one, BUT you do get to see up close the Sidewinder rails added to only the recce Phantoms that served in the Gulf War.  Reconnaissance aircraft always operated by the motto “Alone, Unarmed, and Scared Shitless Unafraid,” until someone figured out that was kind of dumb and why not hang a couple missiles for self defense.

Phantoms in the Gulf.  BA tail code means the former Bergstrom AFB near Austin.  Those jets caused me many a hangover with their 6 am wakeup calls on Saturday morning flying right over my apartment.  SH is really a cheeky tailcode.  That’s the Reno “High Rollers” of the 192nd.  “SH” in military parlance, derivating from the Vietnam era, meaning Sierra Hotel in the phonetic alphabet, or, more accurately, “Shit Hot.”  Meaning a truly excellent job.  I can’t believe they got away with that code on all their jets, because everyone knew what it meant.  Also see ALQ-119 ECM pods on some of the jets.

Some more low flying, often 100 ft or less.

One more video.  Red Flag 16-1 started just a few days ago.  This is the ultimate, most realistic air combat exercise in the world.  Featuring mixed forces of fighters, bombers, tankers, cargo aircraft, Brits, Israeli’s, Aussies, Germans, etc, (depending on the event), it is often viewed as more challenging than  much of the combat flying that has occurred over the empty, undefended deserts of the last 15  years.

Night launch:

I note that E-3 Sentry “AWACS” now have ESM pods on the wing tips, and they finally got the new engines.  For crying out loud.

Bones in full ‘burner.  Raptors venting and actuating.  Electroluminescent tape formation lights glowing an otherworldly green. Typhoon. Aggressor F-16s.  Las Vegas glowing like a barking carnival in the background.  What’s not to like?!?

It is scuttlebutted about that the French are barred from Red Flag for an indeterminate length of time.  The reason: they have behaved like jerks.  Red Flag is supposed to be a “bring your best, let it all hang out” kind of exercise.  Things like radar, ECM gear, ESM, and weapons operate in war reserve mode, meaning their best, fullest capabilities.  The informal rules are, everyone brings their best, does their best, and learns a great deal along the way.

But the French weren’t playing along.  They kept operating in limited training mode, not using WRM on their radars and other kit, but using advanced ESM (electronic support measures or electronic signals monitoring) to soak up everyone else’s emissions, the better to devise countermeasures against them, and thus make their aircraft – the Dassault Rafale – more saleable.  They did this once, got stern looks, twice, got warned, and three times, got kicked out.

Or such is what I hear.  This is not the kind of thing that gets published.

Update: OK, so I stumbled on this TERRIBLE 1981 made-for-TV movie called Red Flag: The Ultimate Game. It is filled with awful acting and even worse sappy melodrama, BUT, it has some great footage of F-4s and F-5s going at it at Nellis back in the early 80s.  Even more, it shows what was then totally state of the art air combat maneuvering instrumentation systems (basically, video screens displaying and recording the progress of each aircraft’s mission in the Nellis range, from takeoff to landing, including air combat, “kills,” and all the rest). They also get the O’ club and general fighter pilot camaraderie of that time fairly well (but I guess Jeremiah Weed, crud, and dead bug hadn’t been invented yet, or didn’t make the cut). The movie itself is trash, but some of the footage is awesome! (CONTENT WARNING FOR FREQUENT IMMODEST DRESS AND IMMORAL DEPICTIONS OF MARITAL BEHAVIOR):

Horrifying: Francis claims Church lacks “privileged voice” in ethics, morals February 2, 2016

Wow.  Via Eponymous Flower, one of the most disturbing statements emanating from Francis I’ve read to date.  Speaking before the Italian Committee on Bioethics recently, Pope Francis had this to say, according to Vatican Insider:

Francis said: “Everyone is aware of how sensitive the Church is to ethical issues but perhaps it is not clear to everyone that the Church does not lay claim to a privileged voice in this field; [Whaaa?!?!] in fact it is a source of great satisfaction for the Church when civic responsibility at different levels is able to reflect, discern and act according to a free and open way of thinking and inspired by integral human and social values. This mature civic responsibility is a sign that the seed of the Gospel – which has been revealed and entrusted to the Church – has produced fruits, successfully fostering the search for truth and good in complex human and ethical questions” [This last statement might seem to ameliorate the first a bit, but what is he saying?  He seems to be saying that “integral human and social values” are Gospel values, and they are, but that is such a reductive view of the Gospel, which is first and foremost about SALVATION. The first statement – that the Church does not lay claim to a privileged voice in ethical – or moral – matters is incredible, inexplicable, and indefensible.  Like “who am I to judge,” this can be used by enemies of the constant belief and practice of the Faith within the Church for many years to come.  How dare you speak out against abortion, or usury, or anything else?  The Church doesn’t have a privileged voice, after all.]

…….Pope Francis said in a meeting with the Italian Committee for Bioethics today, highlighting the risk of utility and profit being the only reference points for developments in science and biological and medical technologies. He urged this advisory body of the Italian government, headed by Francesco Paolo Casavola, a Catholic, to look further into environmental degradation, “disability and the marginalisation of vulnerable individuals”. [Purely humanistic concerns.  But what about the state’s role in fostering good morals and even an environment conducive to the salvation of souls, something so many previous Pope’s have highlighted?] He asked them in other words to tackle the challenge of countering today’s “throwaway culture” which “takes on many forms, including treating human embryos as disposable material, as well as sick and elderly people approaching the end”. The Pope also asked them to harmonise standards and norms in the biological and medical fields.

Francis seems increasingly to exist in a world I might call fantastic, or something like a fantasy-land. At a time when the Christian influence on the culture, especially in the post-Christian West, is falling away more rapidly than at anytime in recorded history, he points at integral human and social values in bioethics – a highly morally troubled field, to be kind – as evidence of Gospel influence?  Yes, tilting one’s head sideways and ignoring a great deal of contrary evidence, there is a bit of truth to that, but implying that modern-day progressive humanist values as strongly Gospel-inspired is simply incredible.

I guess more concerning – more obviously substantial – is his correlation of humanism with the Gospel. Again, that is true, to a point, but there are no distinctions made, no rebuke against the grave errors that inhabit the mind of many “ethicists” (this is the same profession, after all, that has told us that post-birth abortion “aka murder” of children up to five is perfectly acceptable), no demarcating a clear line of distinction between the positive humanism of Jesus Christ and the profoundly negative, materialist, soul-destroying humanism of the modern-day progressive outlook.

And on top of it all, the statement that the Church has no privileged voice when it comes to public ethics!  No wonder he looks down upon those praying outside abortion mills as interloping busy bodies!  No wonder he opposed the effort of tens of thousands of Italian Catholics to stop their nation from accepting the lie of pseudo-sodo-marriage!  Little wonder he lists “environmental degradation” as one of the most grave evils to combat!

This is well beyond even anything that Pope Paul VI was willing to advocate, heretofore far and away the most secular-minded, progressive pope in history.  It is the veritable opposite of what virtually every single other predecessor of his in his vital office has ever decreed, such as Pope Leo XIII stating: “The Church of Christ is the true and sole teacher of virtue and guardian of morals.”  However, this kind of declaration is in line with how a secular left-leaning individual views the Church. In fact, it is entirely in context with what we have seen of this entire agenda to remake the Church into what Francis somehow claims to loathe – just another worldly, money-funneling, occasionally-do-some-good NGO.

I’m quite surprised this comment hasn’t received far more attention than it has, because it’s really shocking.  Have we already become inured to such declarations?  That’s a potential follow-on effect of this pontificate, that it reshape the views of even those doubtful, or openly opposed, to its course in ways they themselves don’t quite realize.  Thus the revolution embodied -and, according to many of his collaborators, intended – by this pontificate can become deeply ingrained in the Catholic psyche, affecting the sensus fidei of millions for years or decades to come  And as I said, this can even trickle down to those who have grave concerns.

Feature or bug?
