So last night Milo Yiannopolous was to speak at the UC Berkeley student union in an event sponsored by the College Republicans. The Republicans raised the funds to pay for extensive security and negotiated a basically hostile administration to bring in a speaker that has been falsely tarred as a Nazi and a racist (but then again, so have essentially all the 60 million people who voted for Trump, many who did so simply because they felt they had no alternative).
Going in, Milo and his group knew they would face a hostile crowd. Violent opposition to Milo’s “Dangerous F-ggot Tour” has been rising on the West Coast since the election. There were violent protests at UC-Davis some weeks ago, and a man was shot after a fist-fight outside a Milo speech at the University of Washington. But last night’s event was by far the worst. While campus and local police at least partially paid for by event organizers literally stood by and did nothing, the crowd of anarchists, leftists, those lost in hideous perversion, and various others grew larger and more threatening as the minutes passed. Eventually they began flinging rocks, fireworks, Molotov cocktails, stormed the barricades, bashed their way into the student union breaking glass doors with – get this – barricades the police themselves had abandoned – and forced the event to be shut down.
They then proceeded to attack a number of people, some of whom were simply innocent bystanders, others who were interested in hearing Milo speak. They attacked individuals in cars and went on a rampage destroying and looting local shops and, especially, banks. Just a couple of brief roundups of last night’s outbreak of what is frankly politically inspired domestic terrorism:
First up, a Milo fan pepper sprayed by a masked leftist thug:
That’s just one very small, and relatively mild, instance of violence last night. In fact over a dozen people were pepper sprayed by leftists, possibly many more.
An overview of some of the violence:
You can find many more if you are interested. Note, the videos above only cover the very beginning of the riot – it went on for hours, the state media has more or less put a blackout on how serious it was, the damage that was done, and how long it continued. There was serious damage to dozens/scores of businesses and college facilities and many people were injured. Thank God no one died, but that won’t be long if this business continues.
As for a review of recent events and a broader perspective, this two minute video sums things up very nicely:
We hear about purported violence or extremism from Trump supporters, but that’s bollocks. The instances, to the extent they occurred, were generally responses to attacks or egregious provocations on the part of leftist protesters who tried to intimidate people from attending Trump’s rallies in many places, even here in Dallas. Spitting on people, shouting at them, hot boxing them, throwing things at them, trying to block their movements, etc., etc – and yes, some people lost their cool and responded physically. The number of unprovoked actions from Trump supporters were extremely limited – most instances, as in the vast majority, of supposed Trump supporter outrages have been completely debunked.
The riots by the Left – and I’m afraid it has spread well beyond a small number of extremists and is becoming more and more mainstream among democrat party supporters- are of an entirely different magnitude. You have the added factor of increasingly vitriolic political rhetoric from highly influential people, not some yahoo with a twitter account and four followers. Yes there are idiots on both sides but the overwhelming amount of concrete, physical, dangerous action is being perpetrated by the Left, and has been for some time.
I don’t know where this is all headed. Things seem not to be calming down but building to a crescendo. I have no idea what that will mean, but it doesn’t look good.
Why is this happening? This:
The left politicizes everything, and given the left’s increasing cultishness, that means they religicize everything. Everything — not just a few rules about sodomy and marriage and abortion — becomes a Sacred Principle which must be fought for with the passionate fury of the zealot, from whether private religiously-based organizations must pay for a woman’s $9 per month birth control pills to whether the Pagan Deceiver Milo Yiannopolous can be allowed to step foot upon the sanctified ground of Berkeley Auditorium 3C.
But I disagree with much of the rest of that post linked above. Classical liberalism was not discovered, it was deliberately conceived – invented – to try to circumscribe the power of the Church and to constantly decrease the influence of religion on society, “enlightened” men having determined that religious piety was a bad thing that should be under the thumb of the state – eventually, if not this instant.
What we are seeing in the Left is the natural result of that fundamental error – for man is an inherently religious creature, created by God to be so in order to aid our finding Him and worshipping Him. If real religion is removed or curtailed, men will find a replacement, and that replacement is almost invariably – even if takes a while to reach its realization – far more awful than whatever evils true religion supposedly causes.
It is not an accident that there are very few devout, believing Christians among the hard Left. Those on the Left have found their religion, and it ain’t yours or mine. Religious differences are at the root of our current cultural conflict, between those who hold to the new demonic cult of the Left (for all the gods of the gentiles are demons), and those who still cling to some semblance of Christian belief. Yes there are exceptions, but this is true for the most part.
I do not see a way to happily resolve this existential conflict. We are dealing with warring religious creeds, not minute points of political philosophy. Our “side” has surrendered an awful lot and feels it has gained little, if anything, in the bargain. The other side continues to demand more and more, and we’ve finally reached the realization that their demands for our submission will never be satisfied, and that we simply cannot trade away any more core elements of our sacred faith. It doesn’t look good.
But perhaps I’m wrong. Pray God I am.
