For nearly 40 years, my current house would have been very nearly directly under the flight path for Naval Air Station Dallas and the co-located Vought/LTV plant.  Thus, from 1955 to the early 90s, Vought F-8s and later A-7s would have been in the air most every day, flying over my home (OK, the home didn’t exist for most of that time, but you get the point).  Of course, by the time we moved into that house Navy Dallas was closed and Vought was out of the prime contractor business, no longer building whole airplanes, but that’s how it goes.

At any rate the A-7 was the result of a quickie project to build a replacement for the excellent Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, intending to greatly increase the range/payload capability of US Navy light attack assets.  The project was a hallmark of the US aerospace industry at that time, roughly showcasing an industry at its historic peak, resulting in a program that went from conception to flying hardware in just about 4 years.  Heck, they can’t even get half the specs for a bomb written in 4 years today, let alone those for a whole airplane.  Vought responded to the Navy’s request for a new Light Attack aircraft – the VAL competition – with a modified version of its epochal F-8 Crusader fighter, basically a shortened F-8 with a wing modified to carry heavy payloads.  Vought won that competition, and between December 1964 and early 1967 crafted the A-7A.  This aircraft represented a quantum leap not in speed, because it wasn’t very fast, but in accuracy.  The A-7 was the most accurate tactical bombing platform in US service until the introduction of the F-16 in 1978.  Especially in its Air Force A-7D variant and subsequent US Navy E model copy of the D, the A-7 set radically improved standards in terms of bombing accuracy and range/payload capability, being able to carry the same payload as the A-4 twice as far, or twice the payload the same distance.

Prior to the A-7s arrival in Southeast Asia, virtually every Air Force tactical mission “up north,” whether launched from Thailand or South Vietnam, required air-to-air refueling.  Even the long-legged F-105 required refueling after taking off with a heavy bomb load.  As the first video below indicates, however, the A-7 was able to fly almost all missions over North Vietnam, with a heavy payload of about 9000 pounds of ordinance, pylons, and ammo, without air-to-air refueling.  Now refueling was still pretty frequently done, but more to give the A-7 ridiculous loiter time up North – often over 2 hours – than because of basic necessity.  Navy A-7s, operating much closer to their targets, virtually never required refueling.

The A-7 got its impressive accuracy through a combination of some of the first digital computers, embedded and computerized navigation systems (INS, Doppler, and a very accurate attack radar), and newly developed software algorithms that determined, electronically, a continuously computed impact point (CCIP) means of bombing that was a radical advance for its time.  Later perfected to a much greater degree in the F-16 and F-18, the A-7’s CCIP system improved basic bomb-dropping accuracy by more than a factor of ten, from hundreds of yards down to about 20-30 yards, average mean miss distance.  The second video, an absolute gift of an upload of a film from the old British firm of Elliot, which built some of the very first Heads Up Displays ever made, subsequently installed in the A-7D and E.  Man how some like minded enthusiasts and I would have practically wept for joy to have seen truly excellent footage like this, showing exactly how complex, innovative systems were used tactically, 20 or 30 years ago.  Great stuff.

I’m out for the weekend.  Sorry for lack of posts, it was one of those weeks.  Long live the memory of the great Vought Aircraft and its many excellent products!  Built just about 5 miles from my home, they were in every respect Great Planes:

Now that the “multirole” is cheaper experiment has been tried and quite possibly proven a bad concept – especially when the roles are far too numerous and diverse – perhaps it’s time to return to some lower cost single mission types, for the vital roles like CAS and BAI?  That is to say, Air Force and Navy jocks, just because it doesn’t have an “F” in front of its name doesn’t mean it’s second rate!  Bomber pilots may make history, fighter pilots may make movies, but attack pilots make the boots on the ground very, very happy.

Abortion News Roundup – Trump Amends Obamacare WRT Abortion, Crowder Explodes Leftist CPC Propaganda, Abortion a “Christian Calling” April 13, 2018

Some positive developments regarding the mass slaughter of infants in this nation – I guess we have to take our small victories where we can get them, so long as the slaughter continues practically unabated – have developed of late.  For one, the Trump administration has amended certain aspects of Obamacare to make it so that Americans will not have to purchase plans that pay for abortion:

The Trump administration will give people more ways to avoid paying Obamacare’s penalty for not having insurance, including if the person cannot buy an affordable plan that doesn’t cover abortions.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Monday expanded the list of hardship exemptions for the individual mandate, which requires everyone to have health insurance. CMS said people who live in a county that has only one Obamacare insurer can receive an exemption from the penalty. It also lets people avoid the fine if the only affordable plans available on the law’s exchanges cover abortion.

The law’s exchanges are on the individual market that is used by people who don’t get insurance through a job or the government.

The mandate was repealed in Republicans’ tax legislation starting in 2019, meaning taxpayers must have insurance or pay a penalty this year.

On another pro-life front, given the amount of attacks, disinformation, and outright lies directed by the Left against them, it seems Crisis Pregnancy Centers continue to be the prime means of directing women/couples away from murdering their allegedly “untimely” children for the sake of ease and convenience.  Steven Crowder below explodes many myths and false attacks staged by hardcore leftist and severely unfunny TV host John Oliver below.  The number one false presupposition behind the anti-CPC attacks – that no organization has the right to be opposed to abortion, that any organization dealing with “women’s health” must promote and provide abortion.  That’s at root behind all this attempt at leering expose:

As to the nature of the other side, the side that sees absolutely no problem murdering perfectly innocent babies for the most pathetic reason of all, filthy lucre, one of Mississippi’s few legal child murderers, working at their sole legal clinic, claims, in response to the state government passing a law that limits abortion to the first 15 weeks of pregnancy (a move that will probably cause most women to have to leave the state to have their children murdered), that it is his “calling” as a Christian not only to murder babies, but to falsely convict the consciences of the women he both exploits and serves that these murders are perfectly moral, perfectly alright, and just fine with God.  Because of course God would create a life just to see it snuffed out a few weeks later, not even having left the womb.  But don’t ever underestimate the extreme efficacy of these arguments in convincing women to have an abortion, and to keep on having them.  Getting women to believe they are doing their kids favors by having them killed and “sending them to Heaven” – as if abortion is a Sacrament capable of undoing Original Sin – is an incredibly powerful trick to keep them on that long, endless night train:

A Mississippi OB-GYB recently stated that he sees it as his Christian “calling” to provide abortions.

Dr. Willie Parker — who practices at the state’s only abortion facility, located in Jackson — wrote an Op-Ed for Glamour magazine attacking Mississippi’s Gestation Age Act.

The legislation, signed by Gov. Phil Bryant last month, bans abortions after 15 weeks (i.e. four months into the pregnancy). The law notes that the unborn baby’s vital organs begin to function at 10 weeks, and by week 12, he or she has taken human form in all relevant aspects.

Parker wrote in his Op-Ed, “As an ob-gyn and a Christian, I see it as my calling to help women in making the decisions that are right for their health, their lives, and their families. I believe it’s my duty to meet their needs without judgment. Not only do restrictive laws make it harder for me to do my job — this radical abortion ban is an assault on women across the South.”

In an interview with AlterNet, Parker explained how he tries to ease women’s guilt about obtaining an abortion. A substantial portion of his practice is made up of African-Americans. [Oh heck.  In Mississippi? In Jackson?  I bet 80+% of the women who get abortions are black]

“Many women of color are deeply religious, and I’m quite comfortable talking about the moral and spiritual center,” he explained. “So, I add that dimension to the care I provide. I call it dignity restoration.” [“Deeply religious,” but still solipsistic enough to murder their own child.  The very essence of Christianity]

Parker continued, “I sense when a woman is dealing with guilt and shame and I’m offer a bridging conversation around faith and the sacred decision of whether to end her pregnancy. Yesterday, for example, one patient was praying and asking for forgiveness, and so I explored that with her.” [And so you gave her that moral cover she desperately sought, to see her over the hump of having her child ripped limb from limb from her womb, despite the fact that her conscience, the very voice of God within her, was screaming at her to stop.  So what you practice isn’t Christianity, but a form of moral anesthesia.]

………The doctor contended the key to being involved in the abortion practice — given widespread public opposition to it, particularly in the South — is to be “more principled than average.” [I’m sure mafiosoes and other career criminals believe they are more principled than average, too.  It’s amazing what the human soul is able to convince itself does, no matter how much evil it commits]

“We’re not superhuman — we are just like you,” he said. “But to do this work my colleagues and I draw from a deep conviction that lets us endure the opposition and frank danger. Most doctors who refuse to perform abortions are consciously refusing, and the people who insist on providing are conscientiously providing the care.”

If you read the comments many note the fact that abortion is a form of genocide being practiced against black Americans with their willing complicity.  But the statistical data shows that in spite the fact that about half of all black babies conceived in this country are aborted, the black percentage of the population in the US has risen slowly but steadily over the past 40 years, from 11% to 14%.  That’s because blacks tend to use abortion, often taxpayer-funded, as birth control, while their use of conventional contraception, whether chemical or other types, tends to be much more erratic.  Whites, however, the rapidly diminishing majority in this nation, use contraception with grim abandon and steely efficiency to the extent that the white native birth rate has collapsed well below the replacement rate.  Thus even though whites tend to, statistically, receive surgical abortion much less frequently, it’s because they don’t need it – they’ve already provided for abortion by other means or through deliberate sterility.

Look for Dr. Willie Parker to be invited to an upcoming Vatican confab hosted by the Pontifical Academy for Life sometime real soon.
